i DID have a PC and even subscribed to PC gamer at the time as an enterprising 11 year old and played Half-Life and Deus Ex etc around the time and i still loved the N64. checkmate, atheists
I mean a pc is always overall more impressive than any console at any time, let alone the ugliest console of all time the n64, but none of those are anything like a zelda still
fuck a zelda thread lets have a PC vs console war thread like a proper vidcon forum would
fair point. oot was much better than die by the sword
The most actually Zelda like games for PC will always be the Little Big Adventures
1998-9 were some of the best years of pc games of all time and it is def reductive to say it was the year of ultima 9 and gabriel knight 3, thatâs like saying the n64 was defined by superman 64 and clayfighters 63 1/3
those pc games werenât even popular-but-bad, they were just the disappointing swansongs of an earlier, worse era of pc games.
donât forget Ecstatica and Dark Earth!
watching my brother play twilight princess was the first time i thought âyou know what? iâm goodâ and passed on a game
the ps2 was unplugged from the tvâs composite input running my auto-grinding gambit in the tomb of raithwall
Iâm also the only person I knew who got past the fish bit like 10 minutes in
Ecstatica is something much much weirder than loz or lba to my mind but i get the comparison
God i love ecstatica lol
when i google it comes up as a survival horror game. i⌠guess???
the fish bit is my favorite piece of bad game design ever i think, def my favorite in a Zelda game. it cracks me up. its pure stupid adventure game logic lol catch 1 fish to get a cats attention catch a second fish and he steals it allowing you to progress your weird do chores as the village shlep tutorial
the more i think about it the more a TP playthrough seems worth it for the comedy value. i mean look what the acronym is!! you can sure wipe your butt with THIS game lololololloollolllo
(there are also parts of it that are legit good and its at minimum a competent action adventure video game so its not like. playing binfinite or heavy rain. two things i stupidly feel obligated to do now that ive inherited them from the kusoge tournament)
if nintendo go back to something as slow and spooky as ootâs dungeons i will be pretty pleased
i think the underzone in totk confirms you canât make a whole field out of that though, elden ring did way better
i am admittedly pretty glad that they put in an underdark and a sky world because that is a zelda game idea i had when i was 10. Elden ring did beat them to it but yâknow A for effort
being at a friendâs house and seeing him play half life put me off pc games as a concept for a long time. in retrospect, the way he played was the mostly cowardly savescumming iâve ever seen to this day: saving literally every few steps and reloading if he took any damage at all, but for all i knew, this is just how pc games were played and it looked like a completely joyless experience. (it also didnât help that the pc games i saw screenshots of in cvg were always so ugly)
when 3d games first started appearing, i had no access to arcades, so iâd see screenshots of like, virtua fighter and virtua racing in magazines and wonder what was supposed to be so good about these ugly coloured boxes. then i saw a virtua fighter machine when i was on holiday one time and it all made sense.
oh yeah this is how i played max payne basically, i think it rocks but i can see how it doesnât look fun
(i let myself take some damage, i just weight it against how much effort it would be to get better. also you have like 9 health in that game lol)
I never played Twilight Princess. Only played Ocarina of Time years later, all I can really remember was hating that the menu had an animation it would play when it opened and I felt like it was just wasting my life anytime I had to switch equipment. I was at my most impatient point in my life, which is the wrong time to try to pick up Ocarina of Time.
i gotta play ecstatica at some point cos itâs just so visually distinct. maybe if i get a spare 30 seconds iâll try contacting the programmer and ask how they did the elyptoid voxel rendering cos iâve never seen its like anywhere else and i think it looks wayyy better than todayâs cube voxels (no fence to cubes).
Further adventures in Xuan Yuan Sword 3:
The story has taken a couple of odd turns as I reached a moving island with some talking statues who were like âHey did you know you can travel through time?â (as in the main character specifically has this power and he just didnât realise it). This plot point has yet to be brought up again since it was established. Now I have reached Damascus where I need to stop the usurper of the Caliphate from summoning a demon who can âkill 10000 people in one secondâ.
Thereâs an oddly large number of sidequests that revolve around complex mathematical problems. Like a widow whose husbandâs will says that if she gives birth to a boy, he gets 2/3 of the property, and she gets 1/3, but if itâs a girl then the daughter gets 1/3 and the mother gets 2/3. But she had twin boy and girl, so how to divide the property?
The third one of these I found was a guy whoâs like âmy dog went chasing a rabbit and hasnât come back, if he runs at X mph and has been gone for Y hours, and I run at Z mph, how long will it take to find my dog?â. I wasnât paying enough attention so I selected âI donât knowâ which prompted my guy to say âI dunno maybe you should just go and find your dog instead of overthinking itâ which the other guy agreed and gave me a reward, ending the quest.
beat nod campaign of vanilla tiberian sun, so itâs on to firestorm and biehn dying off-screen in a plane crash
DUSK is DOPE. What an intense doomclone. I like how the weapons are kinda different. I wish I could switch a little faster, Im not used to using the number keys anymore and sometimes the enemies line up and Im like OH I WANT THE XBOW but its a little too late. Oh well.
