Generations is definitely the most highly regarded 3D one…eh at least aside maybe from Sonic Adventure 2–although the reverence for that reads a bit more like a nostalgia thing to me, maybe.
But Mania being a very well-executed direct call-back to the fandom’s beginning and the series’ original 2D style, that’s just gonna be real hard to beat.
generations is just a bit bland, and i think it’s the start of the “2d gamepay with 3d graphics” sections, which went on to be the worst parts of forces in 2017 and frontiers in 2022.
mania does the whole nostalgia gimmick so much better in every way, which also doesn’t help generations’ case.
don’t worry: after like a decade of everyone agreeing that this was stupid and made no sense, it’s no longer canon. they’re just one sonic at different points in time instead of two sonics from different universes.
Oh man the story actually goes with them being separate entities? I was I guess hoping it was merely a clumsy attempt to explain you had to toggle to get the Act 1 or Act 2 stage.
I’m not sure the “one sonic at different points in time” take is much better. ; D But most people don’t seem to have my aversion to time travel stories.
Frontiers’ trailers got ragged on, but as far as I can tell people kind of ended up liking it.
yeah, for a while there was the classic universe and the modern universe. and while the main characters existed in both, some side characters only existed in one or the other, and sega mandated that those characters couldn’t appear in stories together.
How old is Classic Sonic supposed to be vs Modern Sonic? Seems like the worlds are pretty different in each time period so must be a couple decades or something? Sonic must be canonically at least 35 or something by now.
Also are the Flicky birds still part of Modern Sonic Canon or did they all go extinct
a year or two ago, they also stopped having official ages for sonic characters. which makes sense, since they were all listed as kids/early teens, but they’re also living adult lives and such. the chaotix team being detectives, amy rose being a prominent part of the post-revolutionary provisional government, and so on.
I played this on console and found it to be borderline unplayable before I remapped just about every action, it is a legit good game but I question their judgement when it comes to default control schemes.
