God of War Ragnarok released a ā€œroguelikeā€ mode update, much like Last of Us 2 is getting one next month. I wonder if both of these came from an attempt to GAASify their games. The combat systems in both of these games are solid enough that it’s nice there’s an action-focused mode if you are not at all interested in the hours and hours of walking and talking in those games.

But the beginning of this roguelike mode has you starting on a boat in a vast lake, but all you can do is hold forward as Kratos rows in a predetermine path and talks for several minutes.

I didn’t play long enough to really know how it works. It looks like you have your entire skill tree unlocked at the beginning but you get your special abilities (runic attacks) and random stat buffs through periodic chests. And you’ll have some random debuffs for the run, like not being able to block with your shield.

I’m playing the 2018 Secret of Mana remake again. I miss stable frame rates and things getting whacked!

Sonic Lost World sucksssss really makes me think how great Sonic Frontiers is.

Toree 2 is fantastic still. What a delightful little game.

finally bothered setting up the N64 core on my Mister now that it’s (mostly) stable-ish and tried out a bunch of stuff last night. the N64 is not my favorite console of all time, and my positive memories mostly revolve around playing it at friends’ homes with their siblings, while the one at my own home didn’t get played nearly as much as the Playstation. N64 generation always felt like it wasn’t really ā€œfor me,ā€ despite getting one at launch and holding out some kind of hope that the 3rd-party game devs i liked would stick it out with Nintendo (they did not).

anyway, i downloaded and played a few games to test it out, but these are some i’d never played before and spent the most time with:

Wonder Project J2 is not as creepy as it seemed to me as a kid, and is in fact, very cute. it’s also possible i’m just more immune to this kind of moe thing now, though. however the game crashed on the Shop screen as i was buying items at the start, so i don’t really have much of an opinion. i think this is just one of those things that isn’t working quite yet, because it’s a hack. i’ll try it again today and see if it still ends up crashing or if that was just a one-time thing. i’d like to see what the game is really about, but maybe it’s not time, yet.

Neon Genesis Evangelion 64 is what feels like the most successful version of the kind of game an Eva fan would have really wanted back in the 90s, but it’s still not a great game, as far as i can tell. i’ll play a little further - i do like how it captures the vibe of the show, as well as the title cards etc. it also looks really nice, honestly - i can see why the N64 would have been chosen over Saturn or PSX, as the graphics just seem more stylized and convincing on the N64.

Kirby 64 - i never played this one; i’m not really sure why! it seems like it’s one of the better Kirby’s for sure. maybe i was just, at the time it came out, not a huge fan of the 2.5D thing (although this one is very expressive and well done). i should have played this a long time ago, but playing it now is also pretty good, because i think i love Kirby more than ever

Hybrid Heaven - ok this game actually does kind of rule. i almost bought this at release, but was still in the habit of reading game reviews and let the mixed results influence my decision to not spend the money on that N64 cartridge. i don’t think i made the wrong decision, per se, but the game is more fun than i thought it was going to be. it has some real of-the-era ā€œpuzzlesā€ like destroy a small block in another room to unlock a thing in a totally different room, etc. the cinematics are pretty well done and the framing is nice - the voice acting is uh…fine. the battle system seems like it’s going for a more-streamlined variation of what we saw in Vagrant Story. there are different visual modes available via the RAM expansion, but for now i’m playing on low resolution because it’s 60ish fps. i’m not sure if this one is going to keep me hooked throughout the whole game, but since Google tells me it’s under 20 hours, maybe i will…

i think playing this stuff again reminds me that i can have a good time with an N64, but its library is so small and specifically geared towards a type of gaming that i don’t really enjoy that much.

I tried one of those custom red dead 2 multiplayer servers and within 5 minutes some fella was harassing me for not using my mic, so I told him to fuck off, and then he got on my case and said he ought to let the admin know I’m ā€œpretendingā€ to be a woman by ā€œusing a voice changer,ā€ which is against the rules and bannable. In a just world I woulda been able to fan my revolver into his guts and then parade his corpse around on my horse but it didn’t seem like that kind of place. call me a transphobic slur without using one why don’t you pal

anyway i went back to playing the campaign and it is very cute how arthur and sadie (also i’m obsessed with sadie’s voice) are friends so there’s something positive. i’m not struggling with the controls as badly as when it came out so??? it’s also kinda funny to me how john marston just stomps around camp treating his wife like shit, but I love her because every time she beats me at dominos she says shit like DON’T GO GETTIN SAD BECAUSE A WOMAN BESTED YA ARTHUR I SEE HOW MISTY EYED YER GETTIN

My wife wanted to play Sea of Stars and okay sure I like chrono trigger

It immediately started off with (wow first time ever I miss the text color tags in phbb) the Fleshmancer which was promising but THEN repeatedly called something sewing when it absolutely 100% meant weaving and I don’t know why but I just cannot get over it!! I was kinda interested in sewing specifically as maybe a metaphor of their training/society as syncretic and about joining pieces to make a whole or something BUT NO there were multiple scenes with EXTREMELY CONSPICUOUS LOOMS :stampstampstamp:

There are color tags here, I asked for the … plugin? … to be added, but then almost never used them because there’s lots of different themes and it’s hard to know if you making something that people can’t see

The ddr pads we drunkenly bought the other night came in. Holy shit I can barely do a 5 :foot: song without getting winded! Can’t wait until I can do a whole set without taking a minute break in between songs. It’s still fun as fuck. When I get into a good streak it feels like i’m so light on my feet that I’m practically floating

Played like 5 hours of DQXI S today. Interesting so far. I haven’t played a RPG where your control over even your MC is so indirect. It hasn’t been challenging or very strategic yet, but still it’s all pretty enjoyable. I’m excited to explore and I gotta admit that some automated grinding is nice. I just hope like there are tough fights or bosses eventually.

ok sometimes i feel like im raising my hand to say this every single time someone mentions dqxi but since you specifically mentioned difficulty… the game is really tuned so well if you check that ā€œstronger monstersā€ box at the start!!

I’ve been playing a lot of the Harmonix-developed Fortnite-exclusive Rock Band sequel Fortnite Festival. when you purchase a song to play in it you also get to use instrumental stems from the song in a mode called ā€œjam stageā€ and make mashups with your friends.

it makes me think a lot about indie bands putting their stuff on rock band network. why did epic megagames sell bandcamp before publishing this gamemode. i love music and fortnite. there are new plastic guitar controllers in production because of fortnite. Fortnite fortnite fortnite. Rock band

just hit me that it’s like, five years since dqxi hit

Whoa, this is a thing!?

I just saw something about the songs being super short because everyone has to cater to goddamn streamers though.
