Games You Played Today VIII: Journey of the Cursed Poster

i still think naming a 14.99 map pack for mw2 stimulus package at the height of the financial crisis is the most cynical thing thats ever happened in games. the map you’re talking about is called fucking Bailout

Tried a little of Fortnite’s racing mode, rocket racing? It’s alright. A lot of the gameplay is “how much drift boost can you get through a turn?” it seems. There’s no counter-steering for drifting which is weird for me. Tracks are not very interesting and maybe this is better on a controller. Maybe this is funner if I can get into matches without bots.

This just makes me miss…trackmania nations servers :< they were so fun

If you’re going to make a racing game where you race on the walls/ceiling: don’t.

DROD: TCB day 26

I finished the floor I was on, I had an idea how to handle the room I stopped on yesterday where I was mildly stuck and it was close enough to right to get me there. Rather fiddly room where at the right moment you really need to optimize your movements perfectly to squeeze through an ultra-narrow window of constantly spawning roaches, but that’s DROD sometimes. There was one other room on the floor beyond that where you only have so much time before the builder seals the only way into or out of said room, but managed to escape with a few moves to spare without too much effort.

I got to the next floor, which so far seems to be a different way to use the builders, got through a room and… well I needed a break. This is pretty much the only thing I’ve played for the past few weeks, felt some severe mental fatigue so I went in the complete opposite direction and tried a random single button autorunner named Madball. Figured a turn-based puzzle game and a reaction time game are about as different as I could manage on short notice, played it for an hour, it’s middle of the road but also what I needed for a bit.

Anyways the paragraph of text between locations (oh yeah, DROD always has these to advance the story as well) hinted I was nearing the end of the game so tomorrow we’ll see if we can make our way to perhaps the endgame.

played marvel land and it’s probably one of the cutest games namco has made. the protagonist looks so adorable in everything they do and their crawling animation is so good with the tail poking out like that. the stages are so lively with detailed set pieces.

the bosses tho are some nasty minigames and i probably don’t have the ability to do the rope-pulling one anymore. so uh… not getting past that. cute game tho

i finally beat Sonic Superstars tonight (picked it up tonight after the last time i posted about it), as well as No More Heroes III last night. out of the two, i think i preferred Sonic overall.

Sonic Superstars has its flaws, but if we aren’t getting any more games like Sonic Mania, i would be ok with this as the wave of Sonic’s retro-style future. i don’t have much more to say about it than i did before, but i’m happy there’s more to play and i always enjoy playing through these games multiple times with Super Sonic, so i’ll probably do that.

now, NMH3:

i don’t usually like to throw this phrase around too much, because i think it’s an overused and sometimes meaningless sentiment, but

No More Heroes III feels like an incomplete game. that i paid $19.99 for it, i think feels right. the game almost throws this in your face, with a very large map area, 50-60% of which is labeled “Forbidden” and remains inaccessible for the duration of the game. it teases you the whole game, or leads you to believe that there’s some fun post-game stuff waiting for you at the game’s conclusion, but nope; it just ends.

i had a fun time playing, but i wish there were a bit more of it left. it’s hard to tell if this is intentional or not; some kind of winking and nodding, or if it’s just a rushed development. other aspects feel so polished, it’s hard to tell. weird game!

DROD: TCB day 27

The autorunner I started yesterday to break up my DRODing went full I Wanna Be The Guy on me, very disappointing as it was pretty alright in its first half but is just obnoxious now.

Oh right, DROD. Got three more rooms down, this does now feel like this could be the final floor as it does have a very “throw literally everything we have left against the interloper” feel to things. I am still left unsure about the builders, one room in particular was an unholy mix of them and a tar mother where you have to drop every single falling tile to open a door to let a snake into the main playing area, except they replace them as quickly as you drop them. You basically need to let the tar grow in a way to cut them off from much of the falling tiles, drop enough of them while keeping the tar mother alive long enough to keep the builders isolated, and only take the mother out and got to the part where the builders are trapped when there are a few enough falling tiles left that you can drop them before they can be replaced. Of yeah, you also have to make sure that the builders remove none of the surrounding walls which let eyes around the perimeter see you and move outside the range of the explosives surrounding the outer room while also directing the snake to kill the remaining builders and break up all the remaining mud so that you can get to the fuse to set off said explosives. It is… a lot.

Anyways that’s 4 rooms down and while I haven’t checked this feels like it could be a floor with only 8 rooms, so if the final floor and I don’t run into a hell puzzle this could be the end run coming up.

Unpacked: well everyone says this is very relaxing and zen, I shall give it a try

after playing a little: this is nice but I cannot suppress my gamer instinct and place everything as fast as possible

a few more minutes later: WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT

NO I’M PRETTY SURE A GAMECUBE ON TOP OF A 360 IN THIS SIZE OF TELEVISION FURNITIRE WOULD FIT ACTUALLY

ALSO IT’S ACTUALLY SETTING ME OFF THAT THIS WOMAN IS JUST THROWING HER PANTIES INTO WHATEVER BOX

PACK YOUR CLOTHES IN CLOTHES BOXES

I like it.

finally got around to playing never alone / kisima ingitchuna, the cultural aspects and video interviews are really nice and the animations are charming but the platforming is quite frustrating so far. very floaty / magnety while not providing clear platform hitboxes

played a few minutes of how fish is made, love this game so far, gripping from the get go, excited to play mone

I ended up thinking this was basically junk. Some well meaning grad student’s attempt to portray a refreshing ethnocultural niche with a complete lack of understanding of the medium they were working in

it is done… command and conquer + red alert perfected.

most annoying was probably “build 500 aircraft”. i did it during the “do 10 skirmishes” by killing all the cpu’s harvesters on an 8p map, harvesting every field, and building 100 helis a game lol

A friend got me this tank simulator called Gunner, Heat, PC for Christmas. Besides having really good voice acting after every mission there is a JFK Reloaded replay where you get to look at x-rays of all the shots you made and follow the trajectory of the round. Now this is gaming. 10/10

This is the level that made me so mad, when you’re forced to put her diploma either in the closet or under the bed. Never been so upset for a character in a game until then.

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name should be a short mainstory sprint imo. I like the casino, but it is annoying that progress is dependent on Akame Network stuff. The Akame network isn’t bad it just feels like one or the other should be optional. I should be able to go crazy in one area of the game without having to rely too much on other sidestuff. I like the coliseum and gambling a lot more than I normally do and I think just hanging out in the casino boat is what I’m mainly playing for. Got really into Poker and Hanafuda more than I usually do. You eventually make so much money from this and encounters that the little non-sidestory jobs feel like they’re worth nothing except to declutter the map. I hope this doesn’t return and it probably won’t as it feels like a way to pad side content in a smaller scale project. Weaker sidestories overall and the middle chunk becomes a pointless grind but good if you just wanna waste time with podcasts or chatting.

Agent style is fun, feels like they wanted to lean into a weird janky style given this is a bit of a side-project. The whip filament gets nuts, and you end up being able to destroy 5 mooks with a single button press after a while. Same with the rocket shoes, they just shred crowds and it feels great.

Accessibility stuff seems to be going through some iterations in the series. Autocombo is very different compared to Isshin. Instead of a small 4 hit autocombo input, it just serves as a mash the button to do random (but generally optimal) shit you have no control over. This works for most fights, but it uses heat with no permission and switches styles automatically based on ‘‘if enemy num >1’’. I preferred Isshin’s higher degree of control and lower degree of constant input.

Story is more unhinged self-parody than usual as Kiryu gets into situations that should result in his death almost daily but somehow lucks out. His secret identity is paper-thin by the end of the game but the whole world agrees to look the other way. It all seems to work out for him.

And then a Yakuza 7 plot montage shows up! The game starts off hoping you remember what happened in 6 and ends expecting you remember what happened midway through 7. The whole thing becomes a weird footnote and probably the worst RGG game to play first.

The intersection with 7 feels like the most classically RGG sequence of the game but it’s also where it becomes clear the game was an unnecessarily elaborate set-up for the final confrontation. The finale is extremely good though so maybe worth it? I’d recommend critpathing this one on easy or just watching it online, I’m guessing 8 might come with a summary.

Despite all this, man, the ending is so good and so sad. Actual tears. Ya got me ya goofs!

Also well done on writing around covid, we timeskip hard from 2019 to 2023.

JORYU!
