Games You Played Today VIII: Journey of the Cursed Poster

Yeah I played that game the first time at release shotgunning everyone. Never understood The End fight because I just shotgunned him at point blank till it was over.

I’ve been meaning to play it soon…maybe I will!

My favorite things about mgs3 are the tsuchinoko, camo index and the entire goofy medical system. The camera angles can get fucked. There are multiple dumbass tactical videogames that could really benefit from mgs3 style camos and nobody is doing this.

also all the newer re releases get rid of the dracula mini game in groznyj grad which sucks, that shit rules

going through my ps1 collection to see what I want to get rid of

TOMB RAIDER

still love the aesthetic and atmosphere of the first game, before they fucked it up with too many human enemies and non-tomb environments. exploring is still fun, especially the more open areas, but the combat sucks and the jumping puzzles quickly got to “okay I get it” levels. plus you can’t quicksave like in the DOS version so forget this! verdict: SELL

GUBBLE

fuck yeah, gubble! this version adds cheesy/awful fmv which is fun, but there is no way to save the game?? it’s an arcade game! it’s not meant to be played in one 3 hour session! better off playing the PC version which has a higher resolution AND saving. verdict: SELL

NEED FOR SPEED
surprised how good this game still looks, and I like driving through the environments in expensive cars. but it’s so hard to catch up with people! and the track design is pretty boring! and handling is very clunky compared to modern games! another “love the aesthetic, gameplay is too dated” for me. also did you know the 3DO version had cheesy FMV of a guy called RACER X or something who shit talks you? why did they remove that from this version? pfft. it still has the sunken statue of liberty though, that weirded me out as a kid because I never saw planet of the apes. verdict: SELL

CROC
such a cute little guy! the game itself is an early 3D platformer and is very basic, but it’s fun for what it is. the controls haven’t aged well though. apparently, a remaster is coming out? maybe that will improve the controls (though I hope it also retains the original style for purists). also one of the level names is a reference to born slippy nuxx. anyway this game is fun but I don’t see myself playing it much when there are much more interesting and enjoyable 3d platformers to play. also I hear later levels get bullshit. verdict: SELL and maybe get the remaster

Realms of the Haunting is really cool until the last 25% where it just becomes a series of contextless puzzles, underwhelming boss fights and linear corridors full of monsters

Still, game rules. To get a magic legendary sword I gotta give a water elemental a bong

more ps1 games, no i’m not proof reading any of this

MEDIEVAL 2

the flailing hack-and-slash combat could not be any less engaging. looks cute but I find it so boring. also, I got stuck on the first level because I didnt realise i picked up something. verdict: SELL

JIGSAW MADNESS

you may know the snes predecessor to this called PIECES. it’s a jigsaw game except it’s hilarious because you can get powerups that help you like a little dog that tells you where pieces go, or powerups that fuck up the other player like a cat that keeps moving pieces around. unfortunately, they didn’t localise the story mode over here which means there is only a bare-bones puzzle mode for single players (though three other people can join in!). there are still the hilarious multiplayer modes, but I TRAGICALLY cant see anyone playing with me so I don’t see much point in keeping this one. also the art isn’t as good as pieces because it’s all boring digitised photos or bad manga art. one set is a bunch of anime babes in hot springs though! verdict: SELL unless I find someone to play with me

COLIN MCRAE RALLY

the 32-bit era was the best era for rally games, they just haven’t felt as good since. anyway, this is basically sega rally (one of my fav racers) if it had a billion more courses, and also if it took itself too seriously. no fun scenery or announcements like in sega rally, not even a cheesy 90s techno soundtrack (there is no music at all, in fact). but who cares because this game is so fun to play, I can’t get enough of slip-sliding my car around. the devs had to get their humour into the game via cheats and easter eggs. for example, if you find an open gate to a paddock on a night course and drive in, your engine will fail and you’ll get abducted by aliens. verdict: KEEP

N-GEN RACING
this is a game I got in a lot and I never heard anything about it. it’s a plane racing game and it’s pretty dope, especially when you get the jets, it’s quite exhilarating. you can try to find shortcuts by going off course which I like, and there are some fun techniques to try to keep ahead of the pack. it gets really wild if you turn on pro controls, you can do all sorts of crazy stuff, and the game rewards you for it, like if you hit a power-up while flying upside down it will double it lol. The standard controls are much more manageable and still super fun, it’s impressive how they make both work. also, there is a cheesy 90s techno soundtrack. looks cool too! verdict: KEEP

DISRUPTOR

the first game from Insomiac, I have always been interested in this since I first read about it in magazines and saw ads for it

it’s an FPS but one that plays well on console because of how horizontal and flat the design is. it has more in common with wolf 3d than quake, but it does enough with vertically to make you not notice that. also distracting from it are the detailed environments (at the cost of draw distance when any area is slightly open… there are some big open spaces but they end up feeling claustrophobic because you cant see further than two feet). each level also has its own unique aesthetic, and particular enemies that match the setting, and there are simple “objectives” that give context to the level. really, the whole game is very good at making you think you’re not just running through corridors shooting enemies. the levels really do feel different.

there is a lot to enjoy here, including cheesy and VERY VERY low budget fmv cutscenes. the story is simple but entertaining enough and adds context to the levels as mentioned, including one where you are in a torture device designed to extract something from your brain, so the level takes place in a hellscape inside your head that you have to fight through. cool!

the main gameplay innovation is psionic powers, AKA spells. so you have your weapons on one trigger, and your powers on the other. and this is where the game kinda falls apart. there are some cool offensive powers, and there are a couple early levels where you have to manage your weapons and powers wisely to make it through that feels really tense and interesting, but the second half of the game it’s just running through corridors filled with enemies and you’re just using a power to drain enemies for more mana, and then use that mana to heal yourself because you just get so many enemies thrown at you and not enough ammo to fight back decently. you’ll use the big offensive powers now and then, but for the most part it just becomes a slog. also it has one of the most tedious, awful final boss fights ever.

it’s a real shame it becomes so dull because the environments and story stay interesting right to the end. but it’s just so tedious and boring to play! so, one of those bad/decent but interesting games. verdict: SELL

I remember playing Realms of the Haunting and having a GREAT time, until at one point I realised I dropped a compulsory item somewhere like an hour or two earlier and had no idea where it was so just quit lol

The Disney Afternoon Collection (PC/Steam)

01_title

Digital Eclipse emulation of six Capcom NES Disney games in a California-bright package that seems reasonably competent, per their usual. I’ve read there’s just one save state per game. The games:

DuckTales
DuckTales 2
Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers
Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers 2
TaleSpin
Darkwing Duck

The ROMs can be dumped with game-extraction-toolbox. They’ve had all Nintendo marks removed. (Even the box art–which includes the GB ports, where are those actual games, Capcom??–in the DAC’s Gallery mode has the Nintendo marks scrubbed.)

Ninja Gaiden (NES)

I keep trying to see if I want to get into this and bouncing right off as soon as the first dog appears, also the wall jumps. Rather washed-out palette, maybe somewhat mediocre music, so much jumping to reach constant powerup boxes. I didn’t get very far in it back in the day, either. The cut scenes are really well drawn.

I had a high school friend who could complete this game without dying. I was hopeless at it, though.

I think you’ll find that the music is very good, overall. I mean,

I finished the first Zelda game last night. Agree with all of this!

Got through about half of it without looking anything up or save state scumming, which is a lot further than I expected as someone with no appetite for arcade games. Then I hit a difficulty spike and got so fed up I immediately looked up the location of every secret heart container and power up and beelined for them, relishing the pleasure of ruining the game’s mystery, just desecrating that altar Shiny’s Sacrifice style.

Yakuza (PS2)
This game is so much less long-winded than the later games and gee whiz do I appreciate that. Chapter 3 is almost entirely Long Battle sequence! Chapter 2 introduces us to Substories and item shops. Very thoughtfully paced.

Yeah it is hilarious how the pacing pushes you along so much that I almost finished the game before doing any of the substory stuff.

Looking back, the pacing is probably also Nagoshi’s response to Shenmue pacing (which note, I love that Shenmue 1 pacing), which he was brought on to make Suzuki wrap it the fuck up. Interesting then how later games go in that regard then.

New Yakuza’s probably not great but felt like a breath of fresh air after Issin, like how the agent stuff mashes all the cutting room floor material into One Last Stand before they kill him off. Again. Coliseum stuff reminds me of The Warriors if I squint really hard which is cool along with the spludgy gear. A 6/10 worth of a 3/5, hope 8 takes the parts of 7 and 3 that worked and makes the second good game in the series.

what parts of 3 worked lol

only thing I can remember from that one is the boss guy picking up and throwing a bull out of love for his mute daughter and the goon sledgehammering the orphanage doghouse but those are two brief scenes in the middle of a bunch of dumb cia twin shit
