Games You Played Today VI (III in the west)

most of my hours in ff xii are me TRYING TO GET THE GAME TO WORK but uh, i think i d/l some drivers and it might be okay now? it keeps doing weird shit tho, square really does do the worst ports. the fact that i had to go to the STEAM FORUMS which are unmoderated hellpits, just to figure out why i was getting ’ fatal errors ’ and shit is just uh, the icing on the cake.

really glad i never pay full price for anything on steam.

long live fanatical

my theory is that there is an agreement between nintendo and MS that xbox can have GE as long as it runs as poorly or worse than the switch version lol

i believe there’s a title or something for never undoing a turn but it’s not worth it unless you’re on your bajillionth playthrough

Seirei Senshi Spriggan is so incredible. What I like about Compile shooters is that they’re designed for consoles and I don’t have to get into the mindset of a 1CC. I don’t need to use save states to beat these and continuing doesn’t feel the same as credit feeding since it always takes me back to the beginning of the stage.

I really love some of the moment-to-moment designs. A wall with shooting lizards stuck to it, worms that wriggle through fleshy, impenetrable material, an oozing green head that shouts at me as I shoot it.

This game is a direct followup to MUSHA and runs on foundational code from Blazing Lazers. I like it more than both of those. There are four elemental powerups and they can be sequenced in three slots for a lot of variety. I was constantly cycling through them with unexpected results because powerups give points which lead to extends, and they can be used as dumb (not smart) bombs.

Pretty sure Exile is universally regarded as the worst one, yeah. “This is a puzzle zone where I deliberately made puzzles for you to puzzles through like a puzzle game” is the least compelling setup imaginable for a Myst game

best thing Exile has going for it is Brad Dourif going full FMV game ham

i fucked around with Uru a bit recently and forgot how much of it has Atrus’s cybergoth daughter doing beat poetry about indigenous people at you. fun in a different way, but also less so

I think I dipped into this once. It is grotesque the way it looks and plays.

I played a lot of Devli’s Crush this morning. I learned that there was an ending and I got it in my head that I was going to see it. I didn’t know how and figured it was from completing certain goals, like perfecting all the bonus stages or opening some gate to a final board. There are a lot of great effects. The bumpers on the bottom explode and hatch a dozen spiders if I hit them enough times. The woman’s face on the second board gradually transforms into a hideous devil if I launch into the right pits.

After messing around for about an hour, I looked up how to see the ending. I would have to max out the scoreboard, something that would take hours of playing to accomplish. I found this code that would get me to 924,000,000 points and 73 balls: EFGHIJKLMB. I figured that I could actually play it straight once I put in this code and win the game. Little did I know, getting to 999,999,900 from there would still take hours. I played the boards for about an hour. I learned how most of the scoring in the game works, but I barely got any better at directing the ball where I wanted it to go. This is always my problem with video pinball. Unfortunately, I think playing the game for this long makes it lose so much of its charm. The ending is barely even there. I’m a little bitter about how much time I spent playing it.

If you want to enjoy Devil’s Crush, I think it would be better to find some friends who want to chase scores with you. It works as a short burst, slightly skill-tested slot machine.

PLAY IT AT MAX VOLUME UNTIL YOU RUN OUT OF BALLS AND THEN TAKE THAT DEVIL ENERGY AND DO MISCHIEF IN THE REAL WORLD

the Devil’s Crush OST is on streaming services so go listen to it and give the guy his half-penny

also it sounds like you want Dragon’s Fury/Devil’s Crush MD, where the table goal is clearing all the bonus rounds and then doing a final bonus round

trying this out! it’s rad. doesn’t seem to want to run at 60fps on my system for some reason. but still totally playable.

what surprises me the most is that it doesn’t lose its sense of physicality to movement and aiming even on kb+mouse. it feels basically the same as it did on the N64 in the most important ways.

Just flipping around on a playthrough video, I can see this game is much uglier! But then again, the bonus stages are different and ugly in a really beautiful way. It’s funny how they changed it to that sort of progression.

somehow in spite of being ported by Technosoft to a platform that uses an FM synth, the guitars sound worse than whatever black magic was done on the PCE’s PSG chip

don’t anyone try to tell me they’re better, I have the MD OST in a fb2k playlist, I can just summon it and remember what they took from us
