Games You Played Today VI (III in the west)

i was a Playdate hater ever since Panic decided to like C&D a friend’s small games event for using the same name even tho that event existed before the Playdate and Panic eventually backed off from that after they got rightful pushback. also because the whole Portland/Teenage Engineering/etc stuff rubs me the wrong way and i think the design is kind of a one-note gimmick from a crowd that likes a lot of one-note gimmicks. cutesy tech hipster lifestyle stuff and artificial scarcity = projectile vomiting from me. every time i was around the whole XOXO crowd in Portland (which afaik Panic is part of) i felt like i was in some weird twee bougie tech cult. at any point it felt like the curtain might drop and expose something horrible. it made me uncomfortable in ways that are hard to put into words. being a poor person definitely puts you at odds with a lot of those people. points for trying something different i guess tho. and i’m sure there are some good games on there - no hate to most of the developers on there.

also re: the Playdate, like with Wholesome Games i just realized that even if this thing annoys me in the present, it’s not going to take over the universe and it just has its niche i can basically ignore. when these things first blow up it is kind of unbearable tho, especially when people ask your opinion on things and then are shocked when you give them.

the biggest problem I can remember with
the sonic advance games, which pretty much every sonic game has apart from 1, CD, and mania, is that the special stage pacing is incredibly bad and intrusive

I played Adios, which is free on the epic games store. I managed to softlock the game about 3 times. But it’s more like 2 and a half because I didn’t realize you have to press E to drop items.

First softlock, I got the mafia man stuck on the van, I tried to hop on top of him for some insane reason. Then I went to a door which triggered the Goat sequence. This teleported me back to the proximity of the mafia man. You can’t walk outside of a radius when talking to the mafia man, and these conversations last a long time. When it’s done you’re supposed to sit, but because mafia man is nowhere near the designated sear, and you can’t reach it, you have to start the scene over to fix it

I had to restart the shoveling scene several times because I was stupid and didn’t realize you have to put down the shovel with E in order to push the wheelbarrow. if you don’t, you can’t push the wheelbarrow. I though it was right proper bugged and then didn’t touch the shovel on my subsequent attempts to finish the scene. i figured if I didn’t touch it the sequence wouldn’t softlock

but then! I got bored on my third try and was jumping everywhere, then I jumped on a rock and got stuck in the pig pen!! like I said before, you can’t walk outside the radius of the mafia man as there’s an invisible wall! there’s no way to jump out of the pig pen because the fence is at a height to prevent it. why am I jumping around like a lunatic? there is nothing else to do while these characters monologue at each other.

Because I saw this scene 4 times, I got to choose every one of the four options for the character to say “shit”. and the voice actor’s inflection of the word “shit” has the authentic midwestern twang used when someone from the midwest says the word shit in a condescending manner.

lastly I got stuck in the freakin bathroom! you can’t shove mafia man out of the way, and the door has collision, and he doesn’t move unless it’s to follow you. I had to run around the bathroom to get him to move a few feet to the side so I could jump in the bathtub and out the door

I find myself basically fidgeting through these FPS speaking sequences using whatever is in the scene. I feel like there’s 3 characters in every scene: mafia man, farmer man, and the player character who is jumping over everything like a weirdo. I need to play this when it’s not midnight and past my new bedtime. Adios

man that goldeneye port on xbox runs like buttcheeks :disappointed:

how do you go from that amazing remaster of perfect dark to having goldeneye run at like 5 fps and make the controls worse

yeah i’ve been hearing bad things about it too

5 fps sounds like an accurate remake to me

yeah idk playing goldeneye at like more than 15 fps seems like it would just feel wrong

nah it’s actually pretty great

there is a fork of 1964 that allows GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark to be played at 60 FPS at arbitrary resolutions with modern gamepad controls / mouse & keyboard support:

because nintendo or whoever else wouldn’t let them release the actual 360 remaster rare did that got caught up in red tape before release, so you get shoddy emulation of the original instead

the leaked 360 build plays well via Xenia, fyi - but do yourself a favor and install the community fixes patch, too: Community Edition Updater - N64 Vault

I know I’m just being glib. I didn’t know this existed though, I’m gonna try it I think!

the single player campaign of goldeneye is so underrated.

i should clarify the game in its original form already supports a wild number of control options, they are just a pain to configure.

a few other bits of brain detritus

the Wii/360/PS3 GoldenEye remake is pretty decent. it actually does try to do the difficulty settings-affecting-missions design, though the level design isn’t as good as the N64 game, and it is a bit CoD-brained mechanically
GoldenEye: Rogue Agent is absolute garbage, don’t bother
GoldenEye: Source is worth a play, pretty nice package

i booted up Super Isabelle 64 to test the n64 emulator on my steamdick and the noise she makes instead of “lets-a-go!” on picking a level sounds to me like shes saying “pupperupdupdup”. i nod in assent. Yes Isabelle you are a pupperupdupdup

okay that’s weird and fucked up and it’s even more bizarre that runs badly seeing as the unported games in Rare Replay run better than real hardware (yes I am baselessly assuming Blast Corps and JFG are being emulated and aren’t native ports because I am an idiot)

I’m glad they kept in needing to do lag-reduction tech though

I still hate the jungle level in Goldeneye. It’s annoying even on Agent difficulty.
