When I played the Japanese demo I found it very dour and sad. Is it goofier than it let on?

Then again I am a Japanese resident and 3/11 looms large in my brain.

I finished DMCV. All the shortcuts to do stuff break my brain but I liked that the story was just a tiny bit more mature.

I genuinely loved DMCV, was a total surprise. the combat felt better than whatever bayonetta derivative that platinum is still showing up with when they get work for hire, the game looked great, the level design and the characterization and the storytelling were all a little better than they had to be. felt of a pair with RE2make/RE7/RE8, just very solid videogaming.

if it was an unnecessary sequel and a B game then it was a B+++++

Disaster Report 4 has some moments that are sadder than anything else in the series that I can remember, one scene in particular. But it also has more absurdity.

i can play through the original resident evil no problem. i can navigate the spencer mansion in my sleep at this point.

the remake, however, i tend to forget a lot of stuff. specifically, i forget that even the regular zombies take a much larger number of bullets to take down, one hit from anything knocks you down to danger status, and hunters are more likely to do their one-hit kill jump attack. i will have to spend some time practicing and getting a remake run as good as my original run.

game still looks super nice. the gamecube was a really neat system.

Finished 7th Dragon III today. The final boss was an absolute bastard. In it’s final phase, my chosen team was already damaged from the 1st phase so I was already on the defensive and needing to heal up. In the first turn the boss always uses a move that does a decent amount of damage to everyone and inflicts poison and sometimes petrify. I didn’t have the foresight to equip status effect immunities, so sometimes it would just mean instant game over when everyone turned to stone. It would usually follow that up with a regular attack that would kill someone.

If I managed to survive a few rounds, it would use ‘Rage’ which sets up a barrier and ups its magic attack, then the next few rounds it would just spam its ultimate move which just wipes everyone out unless they are lucky and it misses, or my mage has a barrier up. Then on the next turn they would die when it used that move again and that was it. I got frustrated and looked it up and turns out the secret is just using plain old ‘Guard’. Also using a backup character to break the barrier which would stop the move spamming, but this comes down to chance.

Anyway, I eventually managed it by just playing super defensively while setting up my samurai to do a few hits for massive damage, getting super lucky with the barrier breaks and when he got to < 10% HP I just went nuts and killed him.

Turns out I completely missed out on EX skills which I didn’t realise was a thing, probably would have helped a bit.

I’ve apparently killed all the dragons in the game except for 1 which I think is in the Post game dungeon, but I can’t be bothered with that so I think I’m going to let that one live.

Playing ff9 for the first time and surprisingly enjoying it so far…however it is def the most heterosexual ff in memory. Makes me think of felix

I’ve been gradually playing through Mario 3D World on Wii U couch-co-op, and it annoys me more every time I play it. I wish there were a good Mario game after SNES (other than Paper Mario, because that’s different). We reached World 8 today.

I can look past the worst-Saturday-morning-cartoon-ever-conceived story and the constantly garish graphics, but when it gets challenging it’s always challenging in bad ways. Like

  • The 2D parts that aren’t actually 2D so you have to line yourself up with collectibles by trial and error. (I suspect that they are always in the middle of three possible positions, but even if that’s the case, it’s cheap.)
  • The run button being the same as the pick up the other player button, when the game often requires you to run. (And even if it’s not required, it’s the way I have always played Mario games because why go slow in a timed game? Why are modern Mario games even timed? It’s like Mega Man 1 having points.)
  • The perspective being awkward even in the 3D parts, where you have to jump between platforms or on enemies with a degree of precision that the game’s design isn’t good enough to expect of you.

At least there’s Astro Bot, I guess, the one good modern Mario game.

The Way of the Exploding Fist (C64, Beam Software, PAL territories, 1985)

Played in VICE, “The Versatile Commodore Emulator.” Beam Software released the Fist ROM along with some of their other 8-bit games as free downloads on their late '90s web site Beam International - Games you can play ; the site is gone but these days you can get Fist lots of places, like [CSDb] - The Way of the Exploding Fist +H by Remember (1997) and C64.COM - To Protect and Preserve .

As with Beam’s other games of the era, Fist was designed for PAL video display, running at 50 fps.

It’s pretty simple though: eight-way stick with one button, punches and flips are directions, kicks are directions plus button. Some directions also block. In Vs CPU, fight CPU karate man who gets tougher as you progress through five bright, slightly abstract backgrounds. Zone out to the deliberate pace, blood-curdling fighting screams, and droning synth chip music based on a 1950s Chinese composition.

The set-up and character style is copied from the previous year’s Karate Champ arcade game by Technos Japan (pub. by Data East), but I still can’t get my head around the dual-stick control in that game.

Back in the day I had International Karate by System 3, which Epyx brought to NTSC C64s in the States 11 months after Fist hit PAL C64s in Europe. IK looks startlingly similar to Fist and Karate Champ, but with more defined real-world-ish backgrounds and somewhat more polished moves. I think I prefer Fist’s more Zen-like state.

In Vs CPU, be the first to score two points to win each match; each hit is a half or full point, not sure what determines the difference.

I was gifted the GBA IK+ version of this for my birthday one year as my friend and I were both big fans of Bloodsport and that one had the two male leads bond over I believe Karate Champ and this was as close as they could find.

I didn’t care for it much but the three person fights struck me as an interesting notion.

Yeah, I never had IK+ but Beam Software also released for free Fist+, where maybe they resented System 3 & Epyx a bit for putting out IK looking so much like their own Fist (in fact I read somewhere that Beam was planning on suing Epyx over IK’s resemblance to Fist, but then Data East sued Epyx over IK’s resemblance to Karate Champ, and lost, so Beam figured they probably didn’t have much chance either) so they stole the “+” name bit and the three person fight shtick–but that makes Fist+ a lot more manic and it doesn’t have the same kinda Zen vibe that I like about Fist.
