Games You Played Today V: The Phantom Play’n

I had a very hard time with tank controls before playing Silent Hill, but it’s worth imo and gets kind of intuitive? I think bc the fights aren’t that hard, it gave me enough space to not get flustered and figure out the controls

I just installed Football Manager 2023. If you want a say in how I’m going to ruin myself with it, head over here:

Thanks! I will keep going.
I am afraid to shoot the flying monsters because of the scarce ammo, but I end up fleeing because they are fast and would kill me

I will say that I played most of that game thinking I’d have enough ammo to get through it all, blasting away. Then I missed out on one of the weapons entirely. And I only managed to kill the final boss with like two bullets left across all my weapons lol

And the first time I played SH I actually did NOT have enough ammo to kill the boss, so I was deliberately trying to play smarter this time. So weird! But it worked for me this time, and I liked it.

Yeah, those guys suck. I used the “Harry’s perspective” button for that and like spun in a stationary circle to figure out where they were coming from. I also would stomp on the dudes to save bullets. But! I did play it on easy mode

Very upsetting news, everyone. I sat down for dinner after work yesterday and I was like, ‘my rank in Runeterra is too high to play while this tired. If only there was a simple, fast card game that I cared less about to play during dinner…’

Edit: also, I forgot to mention about Runeterra: one of the best things about it is that the community is small and online enough that anytime there’s something really dominate, that is also not fun to play against, after a few weeks the entire meta will warp around making that deck suck shit

Hand got irritated having to hit keys multiple times to retry randomized lock pick and search rolls in Umoria, so I commented out the roll failure checks in the source code to let them always succeed first time. : p

[I think the forum is making those text colors. Something to do with the # signs acting as comment characters. Is uncommented preformatted text red by default? The text I pasted in was monochrome. Oh well, it’s an interesting look.]

Other hacks I made to it–basically back-implementing more Angband-ish UI tweaks:

  • Made entering a blank Rest amount do the auto-rest until fully restored
  • Made inventory lists auto-open

I picked up Bangai-O Spirits off of ye olde backlog and wow, I struggled to even complete the tutorial. That feels like a grim omen, but I guess I’ll see if the… actual game isn’t as hard as its last mission, or if picking my own weapons and such helps?

(I am probably in trouble.)

it’s a learning curve… but stick with it. it rules.

In my faintest of memories, Break mixed with either homing or bounce would usually let you bulldog your way through most direct fire conflicts. Spirits feels like less of a game product than it feels like a hobby kit. It comes with a pack of levels and doesn’t really care if you complete them but does have a little message if you do complete all of them.

Still chipping away at Russian Wife Sim and sometimes it makes me feel like I’m the Russian wife. It’ll go, ‘Enough Mad Maxing! You know what, I’m going to be a horror game about fighting giant spiders in an underground bunker!’ and I just go ‘ok babe whatever you want’

I guess I do have to give it some props for finally paying off the ‘if you walk through spider webs, sometimes a spider will walk around on your arms or face’ gimmick by getting me to attempt to shoot my gun at an arm spider in the giant spider death bunker.

unexpectedly find myself in the world of arma 3 again and it has only descended even further into self-parody since i last played. theres like an art gallery showcase level with like four entire rooms full of what appears to be fan art with very serious names like “Autonomous Avarice” and plaques describing the importance of Battlefield Responsibility next to them

Oh and there’s also a robot funeral in one of the rooms. pressing F for you little dude

I checked before I started and apparently you get a mini-ending when you beat all the “treasure select” or whatever they’re called stages which is only like… 27 or so of them. That feels like a nice goal to work towards while I figure out if I even like the game enough to dig into the other 100 or so stages included.

I played the first several stages and they mostly seem easier than the final tutorial one, although this is after someone told me “in most stages just act like the EX attack is your regular one and you’ll be much better off”. Early on it feels like good advice although those ninja enemies who deflect everything are just decimating me when I don’t slowly cheese them (or freeze/bat them).

i went to the arcade after work. i feel like i’m not making any progress in iidx, although i did clear a 12 today i haven’t cleared since before my iidx retirement, here’s the chart, the song is some absurd musicgamecore:

anyway after getting my ass beat for a while in iidx (which is how the sessions always go these days) i played some ddr which was pretty fun. i’m playing 9s/10s on doubles and trying to stay smooth without using the bar because the kinetic ideal of flowing all over the pads in doubles really appeals to me. i can’t nail it often but when i do i feel cool and good.

i haven’t been playing much else lately. some advance wars here and there, the delayed japanese version on the advance wars 1&2 combo cartridge (we have 9/11 to thank for that). i really don’t think i’m good at strategy games but i’ll be happy if i can muddle my way through the campaign in this.

Played some more Russian Wife Sim and was mad maxing around a bit when my bro Tamir started doing a lot of ‘hold e to boost over wall,’ ‘hold e to help bust down door,’ and such and I was like, ‘wait, is Tamir my new wife!?’ at the end of the Mad Max zone my wife showed up and she was very aggressive about holding hands, shoulder touches, hugs, and the extremely powerful holding hand/shoulder touch combination. She saw what that boy Tamir was up to and had to assert dominance. This was followed by a scene where you sit on a bed with your wife and you can hit a button to puff-puff pass with her while she talks through some traumatic memories. I’m pretty sure this is the first video game where you can smoke weed with your wife while she trauma dumps, put that shit in the hall of fame.

I was sitting there, listening, and I was just starting to forget the way the sun shines off Tamir’s bald head when she started talking about how her mom wanted to move to Vladivostok, except she pronounced it like a fucking British person. Ya’ll, I don’t think my wife is actually Russian    Immediately after this scene, you can walk to the back of the train and smoke a huge blunt. Artyom, you have a fucking problem my dude

The next area is that kind of like, skulls and antlers look that everyone in video games has convinced themselves is how, non exhaustive list, the Vikings, the Irish, basically all of pre-Roman rule Europe, Native Americans, anyone in a cult near a forest, any white person 29 minutes to the second after any given apocalypse, eco terrorists, cannibals, Descent-style cave people, and old woods hermits dress. Look, I like Heliung as much as the next person (read: I think they’re fine), but I’m fucking over it.

Very, very amused that the game straight up Metroids you at the beginning of the area and has you drop all of your shit. Honestly it’s a good change of pace to go from being the Mad Max god of death to having all-crossbow fights with people who, for some reason, dress as above but talk like pirates(?) I had to laugh in the middle of a fight when one of my opponents yelled ‘I’m reloading, cover me!’ We’re using crossbows, guy, we’re ALL reloading

I gave the ole college try to Truxton/Tatsujin. Why does it have two fake names? I guess they didn’t want America to see a vaguely Japanese name and be driven to a patroitic rage against a honda civic.

I first tried the PCEngine version and went “holy fuck this is hard.” Then went with the Arcade recently ported to Mister. I went “holy fuck this is hard, but easier than the PC Engine.” I got off my couch and sat on the floor a foot from the TV so I could track the bullets.

After trying for an hour to beat Stage One I switched to the Genesis port which was easier but still very hard. Never beat stage one.

Then after reading to much pedantic weirdos on the Mister Forums loaded up Xevious and noticed some sound weirdness so now I am that weirdo. Finding out it is impossible for the mister to replicate arcade board refresh rates so they’ll never be accurate was an lol and how that causes bizarre logic differences. Anyways Xevious is pretty good and I guess I had something reasonabling a good time dying in Truxton for 90 minutes.

I also tried Truxton 2 which is easier and had a better time but still stupidly hard.

It cannot be overstated how easy the mister is to use compared to retroarch and traditional emulators shit just works. Anyways now they are unreasonably expensive so lol.
