Or play the original for 30 seconds and then play Abyss. Maybe the best opening in game history.

finished mgs2… i know restraint isnt really what anyone traditionally associates with these games but after the william castle gusto with which they sprang weird metafiction gimmicks on you in the first game, i was impressed that they managed to hold off on them all here right up until the Arsenal Gear section when they finally went all out. the corrupted codec bits were still lots of fun although at times it felt like stolen zero wing valour:

zerowingj4-18

continues the mgs tradition of making the last playable section of each game a cumbersome fight sequence. the three metal gear section was some bullshit (semi-admiringly). some great, funny killer7 level stuff at the end, like when the patriots ai turns out to be a weird gestalt organism having evolved from 200 years of the psychic bacteria sea known as “the white house”. it does actually repeat the use of fmv at the end to represent a kind of dissolve from the game world into what’s around it, this time anonymous-feeling nyc b-roll instead of caribou footage, which i guess sums up the game for me: “formally thoughtful, more explicitly humane, while also sort of feeling like a downgrade.” or in the words of solid snake: “messy and sad”

i did appreciate how much effort the game puts into undercutting the stuff around the patriots, as long dead ideological ciphers that everyone else spends their time chasing around… so much other stuff with a millenium paranoia vibe can queasily feel like part of the infowars extended universe… when i played this as a teen i found it very distracting that the game raises this stuff and then does nothing by it, since i was expecting like a final bossfight or maybe a sequel where you’d get to find and beat up all the members of the fauxlluminati in the vein of that jay and silent bob bit. playing it this time i got a kick out of how much the game is making fun of that exact reaction

Abyss is honestly a very different game than the original other than surface level mechanics and they dont really connect in plot or even aesthetics. They also both whip ass in their own ways

Abyss is a lil easier than ST it feels tuned to be more of an aesthetic experience, OG ST is a fairly hard dungeon crawler/survival horror game (until it suddenly becomes a cakewalk in the last 1/3 lol)

if you’re ever interested in trying a Kings Field but have similar concerns, KF4: The Ancient City is fuckin awesome and largely unconnected to the first 3 games

god shadow tower rules im gonna go play it right now

Thanks!!

Btw, in the original Shadow Tower, is the problem of degrading weapons really so annoying? I have read a bit that backtracking to repair them can be really annoying…

is it annoying to run out of ammo in resident evil and have to improvise? it’s fundamental to the game, honestly. but yes, the game can be very annoying, and knowing things you’ve written here in the past, i do suspect you will find it annoying.

i still think you should play it. it’s one of the very best videogames ever made.

I played some cleopatra fortune today because it’s the best (it’s my favorite puzzle game next to Puyo Pop for GBA) and it reminded me that I will never get to play the goofy ys phone game version of it from 2006, which made me slightly sad.

imo the weapon degradation encourages you to move forward and find bigger better stuff, which is more abundant than you think (look for hidden walls!!); if you backtrack constantly and fix everything you’re eventually going to end up with a heap of weapons & armor you dont use in pristine condition. There are merchants you can trade your old shit to for health and magic potions and they don’t care whether its broken or not. For the most part if you opportunistically “top up” your best gear whenever you run across a blacksmith, and maybe before you’re about to leave a world, you’ll be in good shape

That said, there is one world in the game smack in the middle that’s both very hard on your equipment and far from a blacksmith, and backtracking from there is pretty onerous but will probably feel necessary at least once (even to just make sure you’re not entering the next world in bad shape) Its not too bad before that point and smooth sailing afterward, i had way more gear (and subsequently potions) by the last world than i knew what to do with

Definitely a game to make multiple save files with btw just so you dont get into an unwinnable situation. Especially early on when learning the combat

These tips can apply to Abyss as well though like. way way less so. That game’s absurdly generous.

My favorite part about this is if you play on extreme you have to fight all 20 rays and they kill you in two hits. Took me like 8 hours to beat lmao

This scene is wild BC as far as I can tell it’s the first time Guy says anything and there’s no explanation of why he talks like a caveman (or why he can speak beaver for that matter)

He says a few things before this (“Where Leon go” or something right after Firion wakes up), but this is definitely the first thing of agency he does, and it is indeed wild, hahaha.

As a recovering addict I must conclude that the universe is doing you an obscene kindness

my strongest memory of nioh 2 is making a really cool character I liked and having daphny go “you look like a dead or alive character” which I am still not sure if it’s praise or not. I like dead or alive so I guess it’s praise!!

Downloaded Balatro on Sunday. Checked that I’ve played 14 hours since. I am now choosing to delete it so I can learn to love myself again.

Been playing Metal Gear Rising Revengeance and it’s just not sticky. I wish I knew what to play, I just keep playing Cyberpunk 2077 tidying up missions.
