These messages are amazing = oo

I’m so bored! What am I supposed to do when this is over? I’ve got to hand in my resignation immediately! I can’t stay in this company forever! With Thunder 2 selling as much as it does at this point, I’d like to take advantage of that, but I have no intention of making one more game here! I can’t do this!

huh like a mix of blocksum and threes?

Speaking of Blocksum, it’s a favorite of mine and I thought there was supposed to be a new version coming but then their site disappeared altogether. I hope to see it reappear in some official form at some point.

At the moment it’s only on Archive dot org as far as I know.

been playing Fading Afternoon and CB77. two pretty depressing games, gotta say. cyberpunk has too many oowawoowa doodads on the screen but fading afternoon is so sweet and simple.

Playable in-browser : )

people were right about balatro. all it took to trick me into actually playing a deckbuilder was for it to just be weird poker instead of sci fi or fantasy or whatever

I’m still hesitant because although I do like deckbuilders and card games in general I don’t know how to play poker and it’s hard for me to imagine what the draw to this might be with no special theme or anything. But I keep hearing positive things so I may have to eventually try it.

it’s less like poker and more like a trick taking game if that’s encouraging at all, you score with poker hands but nothing else about poker is really in the game since you’re never like betting against someone other than yourself. you’re often like hoping to draw into the right cards like in poker but you’re never bluffing or anything, and mostly the game is built around like breaking the rules of poker by getting the right upgrades and suddenly your pair is better than a royal flush and you can just slam pairs into a win or something like that

its really as good as you’ve heard, it’s really aesthetically strong and coherent despite not having some kind of fantasy theming and i think its lack of that kind theming is a huge thing in its favor, standard playing cards imo are really really aesthetically and thematically rich and its cool to see a deckbuilding game that’s like aware of that and willing to just make that its whole thing

this looks like video poker more than chips and tells and bluffing poker, so no big learning curve

you didn’t spend 8 hours in the casino after the first level of Godhand grinding to buy Reverse Sweep? oh

Sonic Mania (PC/Steam)

Cleared the 2nd half of the game, yay infinite lives cheat. ^ _^

There are times, maybe after restarting a stage like three times (happened when I’d restarted a few times in my really bad speed running attempts on stage 1-1, for instance!), where it will just suddenly get jerky, not scrolling smoothly–and usually stay that way until right as Sonic exits the stage.

I haven’t had this type of problem in any other game on this PC, even fairly graphically intensive 3D ones, so it sure feels like a bug. (And I’m pretty sure I noticed it in the session prior to installing the Mod Manager.) Jerky Sonic is not fun.

b

Come to think of it I had to mess with the game’s config file and set a full screen option it doesn’t even have an in-game GUI for just to get it not to freeze as soon as it would try to go full screen, so that should have been a warning. ; D (Had to set “exclusiveFS=n” in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sonic Mania\Settings.ini.)

Anyway, I got through the ending! Looking at the stages, I’m not really keen on replaying any of them; I don’t think this game has very good stage design, crazy as that may sound–the pixels look nice, usually, but the stage layouts themselves are big bloopy shapelessly repetitive things, and a whole lotta the bosses are the usual unintuitive Sonic mash of hurt and hit boxes, and either way too hard in their vagueness or way too easy and broken feeling; the 2nd half of the final boss fight is a hugely anticlimactic cinch, for instance! A couple were okay.

c

Tried Encore Mode but a) the Mania Mod Manager’s infinite lives cheat doesn’t work in it =p and b) you gotta do this character collecting/swapping thing to get past certain obstacles (you can’t even PAUSE the game to even bring up the pause menu to quit out!!! until you clear the obstacle at the end of the new–Island–first stage ; DDD) and boy am I not into that kind of thing.

I took a few stabs at seeing just how hilariously badly I could rank at time attack for the ol’ stage 1, act 1 (30K ; D)–but the leaderboards weren’t even showing me the top times (they were blank–or did the top scorers just find some exploit to log in with a null time?), or the times for any of the other characters. And what, no Amy? Pish. Feels like there’s some kind of lack of maintenance here. Still it was the one bit of the game I was willing to replay and then that went and got ruined 'cause it turns out there’s a copyright claim on the music for that stage and I compulsively upload all my gameplay to YouTube. Sega really doesn’t want me to have any fun with Mania I guess. : P

d

So of the commercial Sonic platformers I’ve played–the 2D graphics ones on Steam, Generations, and the GBA and NGPC ones, pretty much)–it’s Sonic 1–in Sonic Origins–or bust for me! Sonic 1 is nifty.

Can’t find a mod to let me play as Sonic CD’s “Chibi Sonic” sprite (seen very briefly in Mania) through Sonic 1 in Sonic Origins. Well dang.

that’s interesting to hear that you weren’t impressed by mania! I think my personal sonic game ranking is like:

A tier (the only consistently well designed sonic game): mania

B tier (actually good but very inconsistent): sonic 1, sonic 3, generations

C tier (likeable but not actually good): adventure 1, sonic 2, sonic CD

shit tier: everything else (in particular I don’t think the portable ones or colors were fun at all)

S tier: Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine

I’m glad they’re remaking generations because it’s one of many just-shy-of-AAA titles from like 2011-2013 that I think is weirdly underrated (though I also sat out the first half of that console generation and enjoyed the second a lot more so ymmv)

San Francisco + inexplicable platforms was a pretty good level concept

it felt like the only time they actually got the 3D Sonic brokenly fast physics to mostly work right, and they had the benefit of a lot of level design concepts they’d already used in worse games

it’s even fun to get S ranks and stuff

The Neo Geo Pocket Color one isn’t too bad. I guess that makes it my second fave but still a good way behind Sonic 1. ^-^

well would you look at that

frontiers is the only one of these since SA2 that i actually got sucked into shaving seconds with which is incredible considering how little i’ve played… any video game in the last two years

the new airdash and physics fuckery was like getting into high level melee but in a racing game
