Barely got passed the demo but Kalm is much bigger and more vertical than I was expecting.

And, there is republic antique tech now apparently!

More Sonic GBA in mGBA

Sonic Advance
Level layouts became bewilderingly formless, adding drowning pools, then drowning in boss fights, then death pits. Quit when I got to yet another rehash of the never-good airship stage.

Sonic Advance 2
Lots of added stage gimmicks and Sonic animations, none of which seem particularly worthwhile, slowing things down somewhat. First stages aren’t horrible. First boss being a more complicated, less fun rehash of Sonic Advance (1)'s first boss isn’t encouraging.

started playing Pseudoregalia, the Castlevania N64 inspired search action game where you play a hot goat demon lady, that exists and yet no one fucking told me about it for some reason what the fuck

there is an “accessibility” option in the menu to give her pants. if youre a fuckin COWARD

ive wanted someone to replicate this aesthetic for years im genuinely kinda godsmacked that it exists now, and all jokes aside that it’s a platformer starring a cool girl furry. Someone looked at my Christmas list a couple years ago and made a game i specifically ordered, under my nose!! Fuck yes

I think I felt something kinda similar recently 'cause I don’t remember it coming up here after people were initially–from what I remember anyway–pretty into Pizza Tower, which I’d finally bought and put onto my to-play list after getting into platformers generally, but fortunately hadn’t got to specifically yet and I have to find out only days ago and from the Insert Credit podcast of all things that the dev has been into like hard right trolling and racism or some junk.

I think it’s funny in midnight suns how magik is clearly supposed to be the standoffish and rude one but shes the only person who acts reasonably towards you at all considering she doesn’t fucking know you. Every time iron man talks in paragraphs at me I want to die. I don’t really like card battle games and somehow the parasocial rpg elements of this are the most annoying.

Sad this game hard-crashes for me. There is some effect in there that hates embedded graphics.

First 2 hours of Rebirth. The additions to combat are nice little changes but my brain hasn’t really absorbed it all yet, feels like some stuff is getting away from the constraints of the ATB/menus.

The traversal systems are very rough in a slightly concerning way. There’s some cute narrative beats now that they can fully play around with Cloud’s unreliable memories.

Despite everything obviously wrong with the game I can’t help but feel relaxed playing it.

Neo Turf Masters (Humble Bundle NEOGEO ROM in MAME)

First game by Nazca, a group of Irem employees. Their second game would be Metal Slug; after that, they were acquired by SNK.

Since I’m playing both on PC anyway, this does make the NGPC version of it obsolete; in particular after the voice clips and smooth music of this NEOGEO version, the NGPC version feels so silent.

But I also felt like, not SUPER into playing this game. It’s mellow and all, but pretty unforgiving; you feel good when you make a good tough shot, but that’s intermittent enjoyment.

I tried out Unicorn Overlord and I can’t wait for the culture war to move on so that calling this style of localization bad on social media won’t make hordes of people assume I’m a right-wing pervert or whatever. The Japanese script is so barebones I fully understand the decision to punch it up, and yet there’s only so much dialogue along the lines of “Tis a pity my erstwhile masters have befuddled the genteel folk of Ilvyria with this ever-confounding quagmire” I can take in a single cutscene. I accept DQXI’s stylization despite thinking it often takes away charms of Horii’s straightforward storytelling, I accept the overly flowery writing in certain Yakuza substories because the script feels very confident overall, but the translation here just makes me feel like the loc team has completely misread the appeal of such a largely automatic trope-laden comfy fantasy adventure. No attempt at clever phrasing here ever enhances my experience, they just ruin the rhythm, and the difference between the two scripts is so vast that for the first time ever, the Japanese dub is actually unusable for me. And I really wanted to like it!

I’m at the point in Mafia 3 where everything is a big mushy mess of missions and objectives. Now that The Crew has been Assembled you can do the same loop you do previously which is roughly: Talk To A Guy → This makes a bunch of Icons show up on the map → Go do those activities until you’ve done enough “damage” → kill a main guy → talk to Guy again → Do more objectives → kill a bigger guy → then you get…the racket. Each district has 2 rackets

You assign each racket to each crew member, and this unlocks Stuff and makes them either really happy or Pissed Off and changes their income. this also changes the rackets around a little. so you gain and lose perks based off of who gets what. This is the ideal “podcast game” because most missions are a combination of fairly relaxing stealth shootouts. You can do side missions like…stealing a boat full of weed, then driving a truck around. Or drive another truck around filled with guns.

Yeah this game could have used probably half the amount of missions in it. Like each district has 2 rackets but you only have to do 2 objectives instead of like 3. This does feel more like you’re systematically taking down a city block by block and meeting some more interesting characters than, say, a GTA game - which is just one poorly written dialog after another.

I am enjoying it as a way to unwind. But only so much at once. The game kind of relentlessly pushes you to doing The Next Thing Already which unlocks 4 things to do, which starts the loop again.

I also tried some of the game’s racing missions. They’re…fine. The driving in this game is pretty good but the street racing is pretty bare bones, like in nearly every single GTA-like. You have cars, you have an open world, so it makes sense to put a few street races in there. I’m not sure how you make street racing matter in a game where they’re mainly side objectives.

Also everyone in the game hates communism. There was a few missions with a smuggler connected to Cuba. There’s a bunch of communist posters you’re supposed to “tear down”. oh well.

sorry this is one of those things my brain just goes into autopilot on but I never understood this criticism of gta, to me gta4 was a revelation for characters finally sounding like how actual human beings, who are not necessarily all rocket scientists, talk in videogames. even the next best thing from then, like uncharted 2 or something, that’s still just characters finally convincingly sounding like movie characters or something. I still don’t think anybody’s done it better than dan houser. I don’t think he gets enough credit for being like a george v higgins or something of videogames. the absence of the old writers seemed immediately apparent from the handful of lines in the gta6 trailer. they are gen x british smartasses portraying exaggerated america though so you get the bad southpark humor in there too though

The game takes place in 1968 America… the main character and his best bud bonded in Vietnam over murdering women and children for the CIA. Like come on lmao

I’m enjoying watching people engage in a culture war over the UO localization, mostly because I am already Vanillaware-pilled and I can no longer climax without every scene sounding like it could break out into the Ring Cycle at any moment

currently hemming and hawing on Helldivers 2 because I saw it runs fine and Linux and I’m willing to sandbox GameGuard to a Wine prefix, its own special kind of hell

the examples i’m seeing are just punching up a dry japanese script where english doesn’t have tone-through-conjugation?

i heard vanillaware and localization and culture war and imagined pelvic bone controversy or “femboy erasure”
