It’s a Doom level not for its level design but because the enemies just come at you in swarms relentlessly.
Virtua Tennis 3 demo (PS3)
The VT games get delisted because of player licenses I guess but I’m still able to download this demo since I downloaded it back in the day–it was just the 12th thing I downloaded on my new PS3. ^ _^
Runs in 1080p, plays smooth, maybe a tad slower-paced than VT1 overall. Demo only lets you play I think like a 1-set match as either for the men Nadal and Federer, and the women Sharapova and Venus Williams; I went with Nadal since it said he was speedy. Difficulty is way too easy for the demo, of course. Big logo spinning in over start of point replays is a bit distracting. Nice animations. Has three different hit buttons, like VT2: Top spin, Lob, Slice (VT1 had just Lob and Shot; VT4 added a Power Shot slo-mo charge-up shot that some people in the internet seem not to have liked).

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II (PC/Steam)
Team up w/ Tails! Over & over! Lock on or die! Bhargh. And first boss lock on was way too obtuse/finicky. Just boring and bad.
For Bungie copy/paste was a skill to get better at rather than something to feel ashamed of and stop doing
finally playing yakuza 7 and goddammit, I can only trot if the stick is directly forward, I can run if it’s diagonal. how many different controllers across entirely different machines, including an xbox 360, am I going to have this exact same problem on in my life.
the controller is the 8bitdo one with the hall effect sticks. ironically stick drift is the one problem I’ve never had with a controller. didn’t even know what it was til I was in iowa and my exgirlfriend bought a new joycon that was busted out of the box. at the time I thought maybe it was just nintendo doing weird shit trying to be different like they do and wanting to immerse you in mario kart by making the steering work like trying to steady a fucking wobbly stool with your thumb or something
(points in the direction of destiny 2 seasonal content systems)
The real thing we should be talking about is how much easier it is to get lost in the first level than the library
played the pc-98 version of dead of the brain yesterday, an adult adventure game similar in execution to snatcher/policenauts, but filtering 80’s action horror through direct-to-video anime. it’s gory, there’s some short and tame sex, but it’s all kind of at the level of the movies it takes inspiration from. which means i think this is unusually wholesome for me when it comes to adult vn/adv games? that’s despite including one attempted rape by some bad guys you gotta shoot
there’s a little bit of bullshit trying to trigger events to go on, but i only had to consult a playthrough video 3 times, twice for some confusing action scenes, and once because i thought i was misunderstanding a gun puzzle.
it also doesn’t take long, especially if you set text speed to high. like 5-8 hours or something. i didn’t keep track of the time, but managed it in two evenings. most of it is kinda fun and it looks and sounds great
read the translation readme if playing it because the patch or game are apparently buggy and will crash or become unreadable at default emulator settings
I spoke too soon. very useful key that opened a lot of Level 2 doors on revisit where a killer plant dropped the Dungeon Key which I used to open an iron gate and explore even more new ground where I met a Fairy
and eventually ended up back down at the Dragon where the Fairy reappeared and mentioned that the Dragon Doors (I’m pretty sure) are unsealed now and then transformed my Dragon Sword
so close to the 80 STR and 80 MAG threshold for the special attack! (Twin Dragon Ring boosting that MAG number)
gotta go for it. don’t mind glancing at gamefaqs at this point and…there are other swords with magic attacks!? I meet the requirements for the Colichemarde. just needed to figure out what the hell buttons combination to press (this I didn’t see explained anywhere maybe I missed it) after three minutes of mashing it’s: attack when power metre is full (with the compatible spell equipped!) and basically slide your thumb over to hold the magic cast button as the sword swing comes down and
this game! guess I’ll be grinding on enemies for those 4 additional levels while trying to find the Dragon Doors (would be awesome if they yielded some Verdite…) but also maybe I’ll have a go at the boss with this needle gun and see how that goes
Beat Yakuza 8 and Persona 3 Reload, two lackluster remakes that sand down anything that made their previous iterations interesting which themselves were detrimental reimaginings of what made the original two entries have any weight to them. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth out February 29th 2024.
Virtua Tennis 3 delisted PS3 demo
Still didn’t feel out what the since-VT2 kinda in-between “Slice” shot is really for.
There’s also Virtua Tennis 4 on PS3, like VT3 another disc-only game (and VT 2009, the “re-creation” as Wikipedia puts it of VT3 by Sumo Digital: “Virtua Tennis 2009 enhanced all of the features from VT3 although some are mostly kept the same”–I wonder what the purpose really was?
For PS3 it adds online play, which 3 on PS3 didn’t have–360 version of VT3 did have online; but there was a 360 version of 2009 as well, so it must have been something else…
Maybe they had to refresh some player agreements or something? It was two years after VT3, and reviewed significantly worse, with complaints about lack of CPU difficulty, and teleporting in online play).
I’ve been trying and failing to find footage of one of these supposed charge-up Power Shot things that people apparently love to hate on in VT4. = P

Halo thoughts of the day:
So Mission 7: The Library…
I don’t know if this is a MCC issue or how the game is but the checkpoint system is a mess here. It took me the better part of a half hour to get past the first “wait for the door to open while trying not to die” because if I died I got booted all the way back to the start of the mission. Eventually the checkpoints began working and there were two between there and the start which helped a lot.
I think the issue is that checkpoints triggering are tied to how many enemies are still around and with so many of those lil’ fellas around it often simply did not work. There were at least a few sections where I felt like I was losing a ton of progress each death and generally it was the result of a checkpoint not triggering for whatever reason. Of course there were some checkpoints that got saved with me facing down a dead end I walked into with me respawning each time with some enemies chasing around the prior corner to get me so who knows really.
I think the second or third “wait for the door to open” bit was the nadir for me, died a ton even with a couple security laser drones on my side and the checkpoint was a good bit past the door so a number of times after I managed to just escape that battle (where I’d sometimes go from full health and shield to dead in two hits) only to get gunned down after as I was still very vulnerable/low on health.
FWIW I only ever got so lost but people weren’t lying about everything looking the same. This may sound ridiculous to people who played it at the time but in 2024 it feels very much like it was a discount release, so much of every area looks exactly the same as where you were before and will likely be soon. It actually reminds me a bit of the original Metroid where due to memory constraints there was only so many room layouts and they had to build a world out of it.
I am very glad I split that mission across two different play sessions, probably saved my sanity.
Favorite parts of halo were the mods to make the pelican and broadsword fighter flyable and just tooling around the levels in those.

The bones of something good are here. But it’s very early in the project, I think it was released yesterday. The camera isn’t how I remember it, but the “feeling” of SFRush driving is there somehow. Not sure how they pulled that off. Being able to play old tracks in 60fps and with unlimited draw distance sure makes a difference.
SFRush kind of buried itself into a lot of 90’s kids, myself included, so seeing it lovingly recreated is heartwarming
Something from the readme file
Special thanks to Barry Leitch for providing his music in high quality!
I was wondering why the music sounded so clear, I guess they got the original uncompressed tracks?
“Jerry Dubois, now he was a lieutenant in the Marcano crime family, second in command to someone named Dixon “Crazy Legs” Johnson. Now why he was called Crazy Legs was lost to time but what wasn’t were the paper trails connecting an unassuming coffee repairman and Lyndon B Johnson Himself”
There’s a very comforting loop of “Talk to character, character has people they want to kill, go around the area and blow stuff up/kill people/steal stuff, then go to one area and kill one guy in a big firefight, then the character’s goons come in and take over.” and that happens like once or twice until you take over the area of the map.
Look at this exquisite scaffolding in a random back alley. There is so much detail, and some buildings have interiors. The interiors seem to repeat but, eh, whatever. There’s usually 2 ways to enter a combat zone and there’s enough variety to them, but not a whole lot? The game’s repetition is starting to show a little. One clever thing they do is repurpose a large building firefight at least twice, one for a mini mission and one for the big firefight taking the big bad down. It allows you to scout ahead on your first run and find out where everything is. The health system is really designed to slow firefights down, so it seems, so these go much more smoothly if your methodical about it
I have finally unlocked a thing that allows me to deposit money by calling someone to drive over. The friendly AI cars get stuck in traffic pretty frequently and seem to follow their own paths.
One thing about this game is the music is really really good. I guess the music of the 60s was really good, maybe they’re picking the best hits only. Rolling Stones “Paint it black” seems to play on radios during firefights. These really help sell the setting.
Also killing racists is fun. There’s one big battle where the irish guy sticks a bunch of exploding red barrels everywhere, and the gangsters duck behind them, and then they explode when you shoot. i’m implying he’s the guy who invented the exploding red barrel. He’s the only guy who’s ever explicitly acknowledged exploding red barrels in videogames, and it is the 1960s.
My friend Joe accidentally gibbed me immediately after I did an emote with a friend in Helldivers 2 and the comedic timing couldn’t have been more impeccable.
