Games You Played Today The Nonbiri Express '09 (Galaxie ((500×2)−1)) 9小時9人9ゲーム LOOK I MADE IT LONGER: The Power of One

i tried the snes game new horizons. it’s fun! i’m surprised something like this got a western console release in 1993.
i died after about 40 minutes in a storm. i guess i’ve got to repair the ship every now and then to avoid that? i was also having trouble making money, but a brief look at gamefaqs should have cleared that up. i guess i have to go to certain cities to report discoveries and get big money,

I played Castle Shikigami 2 again today on very easy, which should have given me just enough game time to unlock another credit. I don’t think it did, but I’m not sure as I accidentally beat the game way ahead of schedule. Made it to 4-1 on one credit (very easy helps most dramatically early on I assume) but I kinda beat the multi-stage final boss fairly legit, was low on bombs and life so I really concentrated on dodging and while very easy and slowdown makes the bullets move slower… most of said battle the screen was 90+% full of waves of bullets and I think I only took a single hit my first time seeing it.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I finished that fifth mission in Halo CE last night. When I complained about the mission starting neat then mostly repeating itself I did not anticipate the whole repeating itself yet again follow-up. The bridges were shuffled up enough to be fairly distinct but that one circular room popped up maybe a half dozen different times and the fights generally felt fairly similar due to the strict/unique geography of that space.

the important thing about fortnite is, you can be a fox person and send a bullet into eminem’s skull from 500 meters away. The problem is that’s the only good thing about it.

Epic unintentionally created a pop culture deathmatch and thanks to the cartoon logic of videogames it has to be brutally violent but thanks to the ESRB it never reaches the crassness of Celebrity Deathmatch

aka they found a way to monetize what people were already doing in the early 2000s in like quake 3 ut2k4 and sven coop, it’s pretty intentional imho!

I’m playing that Zelda 2 remake, and everything is just so BIG and overkill. It’s mostly a blast, but the mechanics of original Zelda 2 do not make climbing long vertical tubes like some cross between metroid and megaman a good time. I’m otherwise enjoying the hell out of it so far, lost looking for Bug in the woods though.

Halo thoughts of the day:

  • After I mentioned to someone that I dug the Ghost last mission they asked my thoughts about the tank. I said I blew them all up and I didn’t know you could commandeer them. Then they sent me a picture of a human one that I had never seen before, apparently I got on my speedy Ghost and just blasted right past it without ever noticing. Oops.

  • Mission 6 was downright breezily paced and about the length I expected the various missions in this game to be (FWIW I thought there was way more than 10, I think years ago I saw a list which listed all the sub-mission chapters which crossed me up). TBF when the game said to escape I took that as a sign to run and basically got into only one firefight between then an outside, and only then because I was lost and couldn’t figure out how to progress.

  • The flood were kinda underwhelming in their first impression (seem very dumb compared to the other enemies) but I did like how they were teased in the end of the last mission and all the build up in this one. Knowing that there was a big enemy shift coming probably sapped some of the shock out of things, but that was spoiled 20ish year ago now so nothing to do about it.

  • I had no idea why the current Halo company was named 343 Industries and now I know and think it is silly.

  • Oh the Library is next and has the highest par time listed yet, might have to save that for Sunday when I have a lot of spare time.

The Library is basically a big long Doom level. Shotgun is appropriate and very handy. The level itself is kind of a series of big circles you go in with elevators you have to find that take you to the next area above you. Think of it like three big rings stacked on top of each other with the elevator area in the middle. Initially the Library was designed such that you would be able to see the elevator area at all times so you were always able to see where the goal was while slogging through Flood.

Unfortunately they had to change it to hit their frame rate targets so the whole thing got closed off to where you only see the elevator area in the middle during those moments where you’re actually riding it. Because of this change the level became really hard to navigate and it is basically the easiest level to get lost in. Normally in Halo when you get lost you can just keeping wandering around until you find an area with live enemies in it and then you’ll know you’re back on the right path. But in the Library the Flood spawn near constantly so even if you’re lost you might not be able to tell. Fortunately you’re following Guilty Spark throughout for most of it but he does disappear at certain times so just watch out for that.

The Library was controversial at the time because the Flood are a very different kind of challenge than the Covenant and the level design was kind of weak due to the changes but it has its fans. After the Library you’ll be in the back end of the game, fighting your way back through some previous areas you’ve already been but this time you’ll be encountering Covenant and Flood, who will be battling each other as well as you, so it still feels pretty fresh even if the level design gets reused.

I could in theory change it to the new graphics next mission and see if that helps with navigability?

it doesn’t, it makes it worse, and in fact the new graphics has at least one instance where theres a fake wall that does not exist in the actual level geometry (and conceals a medkit and free rocket launcher no less)

the library is literally a long hallway more than it is a doom level (??) and it’s just really easy to get turned around. but you leave a trail of bodies and weapons in your wake so

the library is the source of 90% of the ‘level design is just copy paste’ complaints about the original halo campaign
