Games You Played Today ##RELOAD

Yeah, at least AAA stuff, I could definitely see. There are some notable exceptions, sure, but I think those serve as evidence to how true this holds for the majority.

i think that’s what 2501 was saying though. think most people on sb are on your side re: stupid macho posturing! ive def seen that attitude get clowned on more than it was supported 'round here.

i fucking hate this shit

Demon’s Souls is a game that will make you into a man. A scrawny fourteen-year-old, after two hours with this game, will be grooming his muttonchops and ready to ship off on the next boat to fight the Kaiser. If you are already a man, it will make you into some sort of bizarre double-man. What’s that you say? You’re a woman? You don’t want to be a man? Too bad. Too bad. That’s the Demon’s Souls way.

gag me with a spoon

Yeah, I think that kind of shit is why I tend to come down a little too hard on it when I see it. I just get so much of that crap on the rest of the internet that I like SB to just be totally free of it, so I am probably a little too eager to be like OH GOD NO whenever I see a hint of it.

Sorry, 2501, if it seemed like I was jumping at you or something. I hope you can get why I react so negatively to that.

i getcha. Fwiw the meme of weighing everything against Souls got pretty pervasive+annoying at SB for awhile, though it seems to have faded now that we’re 3 sequels in and its no longer The Zeitgeist (also, to be fair, Demon’s Souls was a breakout hit that did some really cool stuff worth copying)

One thing Demon’s is really good at teaching you is that the “leveling up” happens in your brain, not your character.

wasn’t the most impressive part of the first splinter cell the “oh my god, look, lighting!” and the hard-nosed tomclancyisms in a world that was bitter over MGS2, rather than any real elements of the game design?

chaos theory is supposed to be the actually good one, yeah

Nah, the most impressive part of the first one was how easy it was to softmod an Xbox with it.

What’s weird is that the combos in NG give me like the opposite feeling, but then again, I was used to the freeform comboing going on in DMC3, so the restrictive nature of NG combos never felt good to me at all.

I’ve felt accomplished over game stuff, but difficulty elitism is easily one of the most counterproductive aspects of games culture. If people were more encouraging and helpful towards others, and playing harder games/modes wasn’t treated as the “brutal hardcore” and therefore presumably unfun thing that only true gamer dudes jack off to, there might be a much higher level of game literacy, which in turn would lead to better, less restricted game design overall.

Yeah the “git gud” meme annoys me for that reason. i’m sure it started as a reaction against “OMG this game is cheap and unfair” and/or a celebration of the Souls secretly reasonable difficulty curve, but it quickly turned into this smug dismissal of anyone who might try to critique the games when they genuinely do become unfair. Plus it’s a series where supporting and giving advice to other players is built into the system! “Just play better” is bad advice!!

devils advocate? ill literally tell you to fuck off and furiously froth over bayonetta

I’ve got a fever and the only cure is killin more angelz

bayonetta is fantastic for the most part (certainly way more reasonable and nicer mechanically than ninja gaiden), it just has a few big knocks against it that make people criticize it unduly, eg:

  • the ps3 port
  • the ostensibly cheeseball story (which I like a lot and y’all know how little I can stand animu stuff by comparison)
  • the QTEs and bossfights (and the checkpoint structure), which are some of the only objectively bad parts, particularly by comparison to…
  • DMC3 and God Hand, which a lot of the same people worked on immediately prior.

felix has my back
my favorite a-ha moment in a videogame comes from bayonetta actually, when I figured out how the scoring mechanic really works and realized How To Be Good at the things

yeah it’s confident and gorgeous and has fantastic animation and combos and is way more playable at first blush than capcom/clover’s PS2 output while not really compromising on high-level play

it is a shame about the bossfights but I’m actually not sure why so many people seem to dislike the writing, the characters are all fun (if you don’t love “this is my fantasy zone!” then get out) and everything involving cereza and jeanne is actually pretty affecting and smartly handled, and the way it’s fed to you between levels is fine?

I remember I used to have this awful friend (whos now a terf, groan) who hated bayonetta purely because "no british people actually sound like that" and I did months and months of digging to find out that bayonetta was voiced by a british voice actor just to make her eat it

also its not listed on imdb but in case you were curious, bayonetta is voiced by the woman who voices the protagonist of Read or Die
