Interesting take. A lot of why I’m resistant to try this game even though some friends love it is simply it’s a game revolving around ‘high school’ I know there’s other elements. But the closest comparison I can think of is ‘A Girl Who Leapt Through Time’ to create a narrative device to make it more interesting.
But it comes back to the same reason I can’t bring myself to even try Persona. Playing a ‘high school’ game sounds like a nightmare. But I’ll give them credit, overall people seem OK with the characters and how things are presented which seems like a high wire act with this kind of project.
But yes the photography thing seems super lame as well.
And yet, I don’t get what you’re complaining about? I found the discussion fascinating up until this point. Sure people were disagreeing. But @Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi had legit complaints about the game. But Everyone else had really good points. I’ve never played Demon’s, but I’ve tried all of the Darks and run into similar problems. A boss that stole levels would piss me off and probably have me put the game down. On some level I’m understanding what everyone is saying about these games, but I do play them like @Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi does. I grind. Maybe this is way different in Demons’ than Darks but to get what you want out of a class early on I think you DO have to grind. You want to use magic? You have to level up to have enough juice to get from bonfire to bonfire. You wanna go heavy? You have to level your strength and your equipment load to justify being that slow and hitting that hard.
Yet you take this stuff away we’re talking about a fundamentally different game with a different logic and completely different conveyance to the character. I don’t love 'em, but clearly that’s the game they tried to make and they made it well.
While it’s true people will value more in the things they like, I still default to trusting people’s opinions when they have creative things to say about the things they love more than the things they hate. It’s so much easier to pick apart what we don’t like about a thing than the parts that we do.
What I’m saying is that I saw this in this thread:
2501: “I like this game, but man I think this one thing is bullshit, and here are my problems with it.”
A lot of other people: " nope you can’t think that is bullshit because I liked it."
Let’s not even get into how this got warped to be somehow 2501 (and by extension me) supporting Ubisoft design or whatever, because yeah, that was just projected onto us wholesale, but whatevs.
yeah no exaggerating there
I think you overreacted, actually. We all generally agree that “git gud” as a response to challenging games is shitty, but if that’s what you saw in this thread I think you’re projecting; there were a lot of measured responses about how it’s a fun mechanic that kicks you in the teeth in an thematically apropos way if you aren’t taking the game deathly seriously (one of my favorite things said about the souls games here is that they are largely comedies rather than tragedies).
yes, there are parts of demon’s that were frustrating (if you aren’t willing to get into the mindset the game wants you to) which were removed from later titles and I find it hard to replay despite really loving it when I first played it. I think it goes without saying that “good design” is a straw man and pretty much everyone on this website appreciates and understands “bad design” in certain contexts
You may find the later soulstypes more polished. Some folks like the user hostile design and rough edges of Demon’s but I find each successive game easier to get into. Whether this is due to my proficiency or the design I’m not certain - I can only say I found Dark friendlier than Demon’s despite playing it first.
yeah there’s a lot of this stuff in demon’s
that’s why it’s my favourite souls!
I’m just not sure how you would prefer this go down. Ni said he thinks this part of ten game is dumb and bullshit and gave reasons why. Then other people disagreed and also gave reasons why.
What part of that do you want to change?
The dogpile, for one. Also posts consisting of " Fuck ‘good’ design though." And nothing else seem pretty unhelpful.
I mean shit, let’s not even get into what a stupid useless load of shit Parker’s since deleted “I break internet tough guys” post was.
But whatever. I’ll go back to not posting.
feel like you’ve pretty tragically misread most of this exchange, booj, blueb’s post included. your post was the most hostile one so far at the time tbh???
like
where???
:shrugs into infinity:
I mean, if multiple different people disagree, and they have different reasons, do you want people to just not participate? Ni Go seemed down to continue the discussion, he could have easily just dropped it.
As for fucking good design, saying ‘this thing is bad because it is not good’ seems like a pretty useless argument to me. I’m not sure exactly what kind of response it merits outside of a ‘that’s stupid, come on.’

‘this thing is bad because it is not good’
[/quote]that’s not what 2501 did either though help
everyone git gud at arguing right now or else
Oh, I’m sorry, what he said is ‘this is bad because it is gimmicky’ which is worse because gimmicks are fucking awesome.
I uploaded my latest Shiren run to the online leaderboards and it’s me, geinou, and Jeremy Parish at 28th, 29th, and 30th respectively.
plz send help
you flagged that post along with two others of his, and I deleted two of the three along with one of yours. the system works!
does the last boss of demons have an attack that permanently levels you down? I guess he… never used that on me
anyway yeah demons souls is the worst souls game to start with, play 3 or bloodborne

The first episode is free now, on Steam! Or has been for a while. It’s short enough that I’d totally recommend it, if you’re on the fence; at worst you’ll have only lost a couple of hours.
But yeah, the game definitely centers on a high school! I and yet, sort of not? At least not yet. Like I said, the game’s focus is narrow enough, at the moment–it’s all about Max, and Max doesn’t give a fuck about high school as an environment–that it feels as if one could transplant the concept to, say, college without being forced to change much. The teenagers in the game are not people worrying about prom or graduation or losing their virginities or what they’re going to do with their lives; they’re people who have chosen to be there, live on campus, have begun specializing, and share a more-or-less level playing field, academically. I can see why the creators have chosen the setting they did from a game-making perspective–a small private high school exclusively for seniors is easier to program into existence than a university–but it’s not yet a high school story the way something like Buffy the Vampire Slayer was. Depending on what it is about high school stories that bothers you, the setting may prove not to be as much of a turn-off as you fear. At least not in that first episode.
(It’s also possible that my idea of what are and aren’t high school things is skewed, being a Puerto Rican catholic school graduate myself.)
