The first time I fought that boss, he sucked out a point of strength and I couldn’t swing my sword anymore.
Justifies it for that alone.

Feeling like I need to play Demon’s again. Dark Souls III is enjoyable, but I’m beginning to feel like it’s refined the formula to a point that it’s beginning to feel safe (this explains, perhaps, also why I enjoyed Bloodborne so damn much). Going back to Demon’s with all its weird inventiveness must feel like the Wild West.
but it’s also pretty good.
Oh, honestly. theres no need to be petulant. Youre the one forcing yourself to stay up til 5 grinding not the game. idk i play these games in 1-2 hour sessions and usually quit if i die more than a few times, the notion of throwing myself at them until im grinding my teeth to nubs is so bizarre to me.
Theres no shame in throwing in the towel on the last boss and watching the ending on youtube, anyway. hell, theres a whole topic about it. Its one of those endings that feels more valuable to experience yourself, but its still really cool even if you arent.
or just declare a pox on his house
and do it literally because you totally can in Demon’s
ps-quadruple too
I’m really bad at it.
I’ve literally never grinded in Demon’s Souls (except for stones, later on, when I was breaking the game), not even on my first playthrough.
I’ve also literally never been hit by the False King’s soulsuck. It has an absolutely crazy long windup.
I am Not Very Good at 3d action brawler games. I find DMC almost unplayable. The idea of combos and cancels and whatnot makes my eyes glaze over. But Souls is so slow (even Demon’s, which is among the fastest) and each move is such an obvious and discrete commitment that even I can grok it.
Your experience with this game is a total mystery to me. Like I want you to record yourself playing so I can see what the hell is going on.
I’m Drifting the Hyper Lights now as well. Haven’t had a chance to play it much yet but gosh that first town you start out in is something. Game is really pretty and I like all the little details, like the guy(?) who’s all slumped up against a wall near the east side of town and when you interact with him he tells you a story of how he got jumped by some bad dudes and left for dead. Not sure which direction I want to go first.
I also got the new Double Fine joint Headlander and played that a little bit, far enough to get the first upgrade (it lets you grab the heads off robots so you can use their bodies). I like the groovy 1970s discotheque aesthetic is has going. The first body I used had a button that made me dance a little jig to the background music like I was in a club. Then it starts right in with the lasers and the locked doors and such. Should be a decent metrovania type game.
I’ve never played a Double Fine game that didn’t feel like shit.
This one feels pretty good! When you’re on a body you’re restricted to going left or right and when you’re bodyless you just fly around like the triangle from Asteroids.
Well, actually I shouldn’t say that. The Asteroids ship actually had Newtonian-ish physics. Headlander flying is more like an overhead twin stick shooter I guess.
Bloodborne (and to a lesser degree Dark Souls) does a fantastic job smoothing over the rough edges. Rather few of your criticisms apply to it. Actually, hearing your experience, I would never recommend anyone play Demon’s first. There is no real reason to play these games in order of release. If you play Demon’s Souls later, the rough edges would not be as painful since the game would feel overall less difficult given familiarity with its tropes.
@Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi
You are playing Demon’s Souls.
Why are you grinding?
The game’s theme is the problems of taking power from sources other than yourself. Boletaria, invading, etc.
I know the whole get good thing reeks of bro gamer nonsense, but like, that’s the theme of the game. You will feel better when you realize you never needed those levels to begin with.
I have to say that, while the level-losing deal is a bit annoying I’ve never actually died to that boss. I’m not even that great at the game, given that I lost to Maneater a few dozen times after I already figured out what I was doing. False King always lets you back away and safely heal, I think you can even go down the stairs and avoid a bunch of his attacks. I got hit a lot, but I had so many healing things that I’m not sure I was ever that close to dying.
So yeah, my advice is to back away and heal all the time. He has no real counter to that.
Okay I was correct the first time Headlander totally does have the same kind of Newtonian-ish physics as the triangle from Asteroids.
stay at mid range, you need to be able to interrupt his AOE but dodge his sword combos
he’s pretty not bad once you get that
