Games You Played Today Part 007 Goldeneye

bioshock made it look way better than it was

also, looking back on it, it may have been the first game whose jank i appreciated?

oh, i played it coop for a bit! itā€™s a terrible coop experience the likes iā€™ve never had save for like doom 3 on two xboxes in a LAN. but iā€™d been thoroughly ruined by bungie and gears by then

it was fun doing benny hill shenanigans kiting the AI around because it was clearly clearly never meant to track more than one player. that was most fun in peace walker and mgsv should have had coop

the same psychological effect that makes me happy with an IKEA product just because i assembled it probably applies to esoteric software shims for pc gaming

Alienation (PS4) - another Housemarque joint (read: impeccable gamefeel). isometric twin-stick looter thing. extremely enjoyable and very pretty, but only 30 FPS - would really benefit from a 60 FPS mode. extremely fun in co-op - highly recommended

Far Cry 6 (PS5) - a fascinating mess. overlong and tonally confusing. the lady protag is way easier to vibe with than the dude - shades of Assassinā€™s Creed: Odyssey. the AI is interesting in that a lot of little tricks and cheats used in other games (if one enemy sees you, every enemy sees you + knows exactly where you are) are not used here. it doesnā€™t work, though - they are way too exploitable and prone to walking right by you without noticing you aiming an arrow at their noggin. combat is always at an extreme - methodically picking soldados off while they look around, confused; or getting sniped by a mortar and one-shot before you even realized there was a mortar nearby. tanks are either impenetrable obstacles or trivial depending on if you have the EMP available. choppers tend not to notice you for way too long, but if they do, you can die within seconds.

itā€™s not a good game, but itā€™s a toybox with a lot of stuff you can entertain yourself with. best part of the game is how absoultely gorgeous faux-cuba is. just stunningly pretty in a lot of places. i will also go to bat for this plot over 5 or 3. it doesnā€™t feel like a ā€œrealā€ guerilla situation since you are an unkillable super-rambo, but the tone is way better than whatever the fuck they were thinking in 5. the female MC is pretty funny, too.

i donā€™t recommend the game but it is a lot better than you might expect if you are down with making your own fun

I also couldnā€™t make it very far in SS2 because I thought all the level design was disjointed and it felt like a mess, I wasnā€™t sure why people liked it.

i completed deedlit in wonder labyrinth! hitting and shooting enemies in this games feels great! also it looks beautiful!
thereā€™s a big problem though, in that will o the wisp, the first magic spell you unlock makes almost every boss fight a trivial matter.
still, an excellent game, and itā€™s nice to know that inti creates have rivals in the field of 2d platform games that look and feel great

I am fairly certain its longtime abandonware status combined with its high critical scores made people think ss2 is WAY cooler than it is

Demon Lord (PC)

Went for full playthrough now that I knew how to get a horde of monsters for the final push. ^ _^

Played this time with the five controls (spacebar, arrow keys) mapped to my arcade stick via Joy2Key, ready for button mash grinding! : D

33_5_lines

31_4_executes

The 17 minute grindā€“to the point where all four Executioners had at least 80 HP, and two had over 100 HPā€“turned out to be a bit excessive

34_scorp_groin

,

but it didnā€™t backfire after the twist, because it turns out

36_3_thieves

power levels just continue to escalate from thereā€“and you get to summon super powerful monsters you never saw before,

to fight huge stacks of opponents!

38_cyclops_eyes

(How high do the power levels go, anyway? = oo)

Itā€™s a fun play-through! ^ _^ Will be very interesting to see if the more clicky, less mashy remake will be as nakedly entertaining.

The steam summer sale is about to end. Does anyone have more obscure recommendations to grab at the last minute?

Fear & Hunger is just $5.59 and very intriguing. Checkout the thread I made for Fear & Hunger if you get the game.

My favorite Survival Horror game of the recent revival, Endoparasitic, is just $7.50 and well worth it.

and you can get Receiver and Receiver 2 for real cheap right now too, and these are some of the best games ever.

Edit: I just discovered that the Continue?9876543210 developer released another game a few years ago. Nearly all of the first-page reviews are negative. I might have to try it.

There is a blog somewhere where the dev detailed his development of the game which included moving to Iowa and crunching on it fulltime for like 5 years and how much of a mess things were.

System Shock 2 gilded the lily by adding a bunch of poorly balanced rpg subsystems into system shock

It was just unnecessary and made the game palpably worse than its predecessor. Why should I be thinking about leveling up my guns skill in this cyber horror dungeon? Itā€™s stupid. I should be thinking about not getting ambushed by a cybercorpse, not about scouring the space station for upgrade tokens. It kills the horror vibe strongly established by the sound design

I hadnā€™t thought a second about progression systems in my time playing the remake, and I think thatā€™s pretty telling about how already satisfying the experience is without carrot and stick incentives like that. Like, regardless if thereā€™s not much character building in the game, it still feels like an RPG in the way imsims create a lot of meaning with the agency you can express simply through the use of certain tools or even your movement through levels. Itā€™s fantastic as is, youā€™re right.

well well well

iā€™ve been saying system shock 2 sucks for YEARS, like since it came out, and everyone called me a dumbass

WHOā€™S THE DUMBASS NOW???

still me but for reasons unrelated to my correct opinions about system shock 2

and yes the (incredibly unbalanced) class and stats elements ruined it, and the tedious weapon breaking thing, and so many objectives are just padding and maintenance work (there is a bit of that in the original, but almost all of ss2 is full of it), and so many other issues, it just SUCKS

Iā€™ve probably said this on SB before, but Continue?9876543210 is still one of the video games I think about most. I vaguely remember that it might have been tedious in places, but I really only remember the good parts at this point.

Anyway, Iā€™ve bought that other game by the dev and will try it out, maybe after I finish Paranormasight (which continues to be great).

I thought I was the only person who played Continue?9876543210

I got to a point where I just had no idea what to do next, nor any idea how much longer it would be since the narrative wasnā€™t traditional, but I really enjoyed it until that point. I liked hanging out in the juggalo trailer park.
