bought a copy of Gran Turismo Sport because it’s 10 bucks, assuming it would have some sort of career mode. it does not. disappointing.
“No Good Gofers” in Pinball FX (PS4) (cropped/composite screenshot)
Brutally hard in the Pro mode vs my memories of the table from The Pinball Arcade. “Successful” skill shot can go SDtM, etc. ;_; Kept letting myself get distracted by the wacky antics of the “gofers,” also as soon as the red light showed at the hole shot and that ominous fast music started for launching some sort of big mode I would DRAIN ALL MY BALLS every time. All of them! Every time! Jiminy jeepers! … I guess I like it though. : P
been playing shin megami tensei: devil survivor overclocked throughout the week. it’s so good! i love that its a game that somehow requires (at least feels like it, based on the harder free-battles) both no-living your way through grinding and buying demons to fuse them, but also is structured such that you’re invited to play one in-game day a day.
its always cool when a RPG is about a Thing That’s Happening In a City
Would you rec overclocked particularly? It’s high on my list atm but i was gonna go for the original because ds grafix >>>>>>>>>>>>>> 3ds grafix
the 3ds one is fully voiced which is the one thing i kinda dislike about it so far. don’t really have any frame of reference to compare the two versions beyond the fact overclocked is the the one with more stuff in it overall
finished HROT today
as expected, the stages did get a bit more compelling and creative as the game went on. this is kind of the classic “episodic structure” problem where creators get a lot more confident in the game they’re making as things go on and you see what the game really wants to be at the end. there wasn’t that total variety of creativity in a game like DUSK but there were some nice unique moments, especially in the third episode. it’s also quite hard in places - even on the moderate difficulty i was playing on. a lot of places where things turn into an outright wave shooter/slaughterfest i.e…
i’d imagine there’s a lot of replay value there too because i had a hard time finding a lot of the secrets. the last boss fight was also very funny and felt like a good ending to the game overall (which i won’t spoil here).
i ended up feeling softer on this game by the end than i did after the first episode. i’m not sure i’d rank it above AMID EVIL or DUSK, maybe just because of the retro FPS/boomer shooter fatigue i’m really starting to feel at this point. i’m not sure this really transcends the issues of a lot of those kinds of games even though it felt like there was a lot more heart to this than many others. outside of this game and Slayers X i’m not sure there’s much new stuff in that space that really interests me at this point. but i feel like this was a worthwhile experience by the end. i’d probably upgrade it to a 7.5 or 8 out of 10 in my head.
i really like the castle wolfenstein level thats a parody of the war with the newts
also it’s funny how many of the boss fights are against former czech communist party officials, I think you fight the party chairman at the ww1 war memorial in prague at the end of ep 1 since he’s a dickhead who replaced all that shit with his mausoleum
they have this at one of my local pubs! there is a rumour that there is a secret cuss mode that makes the gofers go r-rated
Nice! I didn’t realize the DMD is that big on it. It’s one I seem to have missed playing in person; I’d like to see it because in the video versions it’s hard to understand quite how that plate that comes down in the middle to deflect center shots to the upper level works.
I wonder if there’s one in Seattle somewhere, maybe I can convince one of the two pinball bar proprietors I know to put one out.
JAG NAG
SUPER BURNOUT
We have super hangon at home! This is actually pretty good. the jag was great at these super scaler style games… super smooth, controls well, looks good. some nice details such as changing the time of day through a race. the big problem is that it feels like when you make ONE mistake, there is no way to catch up so i haven’t managed to not come last yet.
scratch that, i just came first, this game rules actually
SPACE WAR 2000
i was TRICKED, this is actually a proto but it’s not labelled as such because it was released commercially by some group. the aesthetic for the menu is WILD, spinning colours everywhere, a pair of giant hands launches your ship, and you’re greeted by a giant three eyed face at the end of a level
the game itself isnt very exciting, and i can see why it was shelved. a pretty generic 3D space dog fighting game. i mean, it’s fine i guess, but very bland. since it’s unfinished, stuff like the shop doesn’t work so there really isn’t much to see here beyond the cool UI aesthetic
SKY HAMMER
this seems pretty cool, flying around a 3D cyberpunk city doing objectives. seems to have a lot to it… need to spend more time with it to see if it’s actually any good
SYNDICATE
It’s Syndicate! seems like a solid port

jupiter isnt on here, and ive definitely played gophers there. i THINK ive played it at shortys too! i dunno if its like the bay area where a lot of people would switch their tables out either. like sometimes at lucky juju you’d be able to play hercules but most of the time it was at musee mechanique or like, the exploratorium???
Exploit the way manual loading works and all you need is short logs
yeah IIRC the guy that runs AddaBall has a storage unit or warehouse somewhere filled with pins in various states of repair and swaps them out to keep things fresh.
I got to try this once and it it’s some legit alice in wonderland stuff.
For those unfamiliar, it’s a giant table that uses a pool-style cue ball instead of the usual steel ball bearing.
i always thought it was an actual cue ball but that could just be carny marketing stuff they told me to get me all excited as if i needed to be MADE excited by a table almost as wide as i was tall
its a really good beginner table, turns out big balls dont go as fast
I slept on the joke I was originally going to make here thankfully, but yeah it’s slooowwwww. It sort of had the weird effect of making me feel like it wasn’t tough enough to hit the flippers hard enough, carnival strength bell style. Totally fits the gimmick.
I found myself in front of my computer with an unexpected bit of free time, and fired up 10 Second Ninja DX.
As a concept I actually quite like it, I enjoy race-the-clock type of action games. It’s clear to me however that it might take way more effort to master this one than I’m willing to put in. The mechanics are very simple, I could just see it taking lots of attempts to perfect my runs. I guess I’ll see how far I get before I hit some kind of a wall.
I pretty strongly dislike the presentation, have to say that. Might wind up muting the music and SFX at least and replace them with whatever else I feel like listening to.
cozy grove has some of the most carefully considered economic loops in the lifesim genre. i’m playing on pc but i can see how this make more sense on telephones because it’s both a drip fed narrative and a hidden object game in addition to being an animal crossing. more specifically it’s the first week of animal crossing where you can only play for 45 minutes a day but done on purpose. a breakfast game. i have a high tolerance for tweeness so the young adultish vibe of all these saucy little muppets who are the typical modern npc mode of dad jokes, puns, and gentle ennui is not amazing but fine, feels maybe 10% more literary than the usual stuff. very good brainfeel though i’m totally stealing this framework for my own someday.
