Games You Played Today Part 007 Goldeneye

I want to say the 32X and the Jag port of DooM have some relationship and you can similarly crash the 32x port by playing it.

Compared to Hinge Problems’ 32x adventure last year what would you say is the average letter grade for Jag games so far?

SUCH an interesting developer. Knocking out Total War games as a mainstay, and every time they dip their toes into an action game, they make something slightly off-genre and almost always great.

is viking battle for asgard really “great” because that’s the only action game they made besides spartan total warrior which fucking rules

I said almost!

Alien Isolation is also an action game broadly speaking, I was including that.

is it local co-op?

crash the 32x port by playing it

This was usually guaranteed by running towards a large mob with the rocket launcher

EDIT: Also glad I own Spartan, which I picked-up on the cheap a while ago

the Jag port of Doom is the version that the large majority of console ports were based off of

I don’t think so. It has a team and solo competitive death match and objective-based PvP multiplayer with customizable loadouts.

i still only play sekiro. it is truly the game.

been a while-

started mother 3 on a hellish flight and am pretty delighted by it. i bought a souped up gba a little while ago w/ a backlit ips screen, so it’s a very pleasant experience. it’s quirky to a fault imo, but this is also in the context of 2023 where i almost always find quirk in media a lil annoying. it’s harder than i thought it would be, but not in a way that feels cumbersome. fave tune so far is the yado inn jam and i really like the save frog in the retirement home that calls me “shonny”. i really like that it’s broken up into these digestible chapters and it’s been taking the place of whatever book i carry in my bag for downtime.

i picked up RE4 when it came out but i fell off it after saving ashley. started up RE2make instead and had way more fun because of how less it focuses on the action aspect of the game. i don’t really like shooting zombos up so much as stuff like figuring out my boss’ prank to get stuff out of my desk. leon is such a goof, i love it. it’s also the perfect length! think i finished it in under 6 hours.

probably going to fully embrace the modern controls on SF6 so i can play competently! i tried out chun, ryu, and marisa last night and had the most fun with good ol’ chun. if i keep up with this and beat mother 3, then my 2023 game goals will actually get reached!

i really should write these out as they come to mind because i know i had more to say, o well!

oh that’s right, went to some arcades in Shinsekai hoping for a good time but alas a lot of the cabs were broken down or shutoff and in various states of what looked like disrepair. :frowning:

IL-2’s dynamic campaign briefings are so fucking hard to please, its either ohh your the best ever because you shot down 10 planes or something ridiculous yourself or its some passive aggressive shit like this

i got one kill in the last mission where i was leading the squadron. IF YOU ASK ME IT LOOKS LIKE MY TEAMMATES GOT MORE KILLS THAN ME AND NONE OF US GOT SHOT DOWN SO WHY DONT I GET CREDIT FOR MY LEADERSHIP YOU MOTHERFUCKING GAME

explain to me how this result is better than the first one.

i dont even want to fly in this campaign anymore. i am going to crash my plane into the fucking control tower

JAG OFF

BREAKOUT 2000

A mediocre arkanoid clone with a weird low perspective. This one is actually fine I suppose, it has some nice production values (for the time/system) and plays mostly fine, but it doesn’t offer anything over the billion other brick breaking games out there (in fact some of the mechanics are more annoying than fun, but there isn’t anything too offensive)

ZERO 5

A 3D space shooter with cool low poly graphics but BOY does the camera angle make it impossible to play. i couldnt even get past the first level, it was just too painful. i looked up some videos and there are different game styles afterwards, but i just find the first level too impossible to control. Also it seems to be relying on the weird camera for the challenge/design… the actual shooter mechanics and enemies are incredibly dull.

VAK D’LSERE SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING

Literally just outrun on skis/a snowboard. fast and smooth, this is okay except that there are way too many hills which you cant see over until its too late, and everything is white so it’s sometimes hard to see where the actual path is. still, they give you lots of time, and give you iframes after crashing which is nice. probably would have enjoyed this as a kid.

SUPERCROSS 3D

A polygonal dirt bike racer that runs at 2 frames a second, looks like crap, has unresponsive controls, and you fall off your bike the instant you go off the main track. so, it is bad, but i had fun with it when i got used to the controls because i just like dirt bike racing games. also your racer has a dumptruck ass.

TROY AIKMEN NFL FOOTBALL

this seems fine? i dont know anything about american football. nice big sprites and plays smooth enough. i dunno!

ARENA FOOTBALL 95

what did i just say?? also it doesnt seem to work correctly/crashes in the emulator

ZOOL 2

The only (cart) console version of this game, it would be okay if it wasnt one of those games where you have to collect a certain amount of things before it lets you leave a level. just let me go from left to right in my hop n bops plz

CANNON FODDER

it’s cannon fodder! it has the vocal theme so that’s the most important thing, even if it doesnt have the fmv cutscenes (but it does reference them). seems to be a very solid port aside from SLIGHTLY long load times

WORMS

it’s worms! seems like a solid port

FLASHBACK

it’s flashback! seems like a solid port.

I ENDED UP JAGGING OFF SOME MORE, I’m going to kinda rank them all when i’m done (no doing protos or homebrew) and post screens of the cooler looking ones

WHITE MEN CAN’T JUMP

Digitised sprites smacking each other around on half of basketball court while you’re assaulted with 90s catchphrases with a camera constantly zooming in and out, i kinda love this game tbh lol, janky as hell but chaotic fun and has personality

ULTRA VORTEK

A janky, clunky, slow mortal kombat that is AWESOME, I love the backgrounds and characters, so much cheesy 90s edginess! this would be great with like-minded friends, goofy fun as long as you dont take it seriously

TOWERS 2

We have ultima underworld at home! i accidentally played this for a long time, i like real-time dungeon crawlers, even ones with terrible frame rates. pretty fun! secret passages, simple puzzles, sense of humour… i DID get stuck at the start because turns out you had to kill these harmless people to get keys which i thought was BS, but i checked the manual and it says “nah these dudes are assholes actually” so i guess it’s okay? aside from that, i really dig this, but you really have to like this type of game

THEME PARK

it’s theme park! seems like a solid port, except you don’t have the cool FMVs from the CD versions

xenoblade 2 has a cool world that i enjoy exploring and some of the plot points are interesting in that xeno series kinda way, but it’s all covered with this juvenile otaku veneer that is the most off-putting thing in the world. i’m near 70 hours in (which is definitely inflated because the stupid merc mission system encourages me to leave the game idling); i am driven forward by the new environments i’m encountering (or finding hidden areas in older ones) whilst simultaneously constantly repulsed by The Anime

gran turismo 2 is such an impressive improvement over gt1 – there’s more of everything in every way that matters. however, i am trying to take it somewhat seriously and am being constantly thwarted in those efforts by the ai treating me as a punching bag in every corner. sure, when i was a kid i played gran turismo games like they were The Real Bumper Car Simulator(s), but i’ve got class now! i know i can beat this game by either driving overpowered cars or slamming into my opponents, but i just want to drive and enjoy competition with good sportsmanship. i guess it took the emotion engine for the ai drivers to develop empathy

by the time I got to the 2nd half of xenoblade 2 I was literally skipping every single cutscene. Game was worth it for the beautiful vistas and comboing gigantic monsters though.

I played MudRunner on PS4 the other night with some friends. It turns out that I play that game about once a year, at almost exactly the same time. Every time I do, I think to myself that I should go through the tutorial, so maybe I can finally learn how to load up something other than short logs. But then I never do.

Also, despite how annoying the game can be (okay, maybe it’s because of how annoying the game can be), I find that it’s a fun experience every time. It’s the kind of game where you have a story to tell afterward, not just one where you go through the motions or follow a narrative that’s been laid out for you.

On second thought, I’m not sure it would be fun to play alone. So maybe I’ll wait until a year from now when I play it again and hopefully then figure out how to load those other log types.

Lets play together at the meetup, I can teach you how to load non log cargo

i’ve never played mudrunner but snowrunner at least is so great. i’d like to play a hundred hours of it sometime

I’ve read that SnowRunner has some improvements but is missing the dreariness. I love that every map I’ve seen so far in MudRunner is gray and depressing. That’s part of the appeal for me. But I do own SnowRunner and will likely try it at some point.

If anyone wants to do a SB PS4 MudRunner night sometime, that could be fun. The online multiplayer supports up to 4 and seems to work fine. (If you get disconnected, which happens occasionally, the game remembers the last state of things even if you were the “host” player.)
