Slept on Devil Survivor for too long
This game is like crack
Named by character Eta Funaki
Nickname: FETA
These tiny graphics hurt my eyes though
I’m excited to report that playing PD Orta on an Xbone gets past the second level
doing the rizap sidequest in yakuza 6 is making me want to go to the gym. depictions of gym regimens in media make me feel the same way cigarette smokers do when they see people smoking on tv
Like a bad person? But also a little angry at people who besmirch your habit?
far cry 5 keeps doing this thing where you keep getting forcibly captured through the story, like a million times, and the bad guys don’t kill you, just force you to listen to terrible dialogue that I can feel my ears turning red with embarrassment from hearing and mind blowing revelations like “have you ever thought about how you kill so much in a videogame that doesn’t let you interact with the world in any other way” and you just keep escaping and killing them but they still just keep doing it
you’re constantly rewarded by progressing in the game with “capture parties” with magic knock out bullets, so every couple hours or so you know you’re going to go unconscious, lose your weapons for a while but inexplicably get them back a little later and sit through a bunch of bullshit in first person, a lot of it unskippable
you get told to “shoot the hinges” at one part
no like it’s just lit to be fit. i think it’s cool to smoke and to go to the gym
Hiring the Bioshock Infinite writer is really paying off for UbiSoft.
HYPE
Are you not holding down the crouch button to skip the monologues?
now it’s letting me skip most of the dialogues but early on it seemed there were more that I couldn’t
I’m skipping every dialogue I can. something I’m normally against, but it’s like I’m back in far cry 2. I’m in some ubisoft purgatory where AAA videogame writing out of 2006-2009 just never stops.
I keep playing though because when you have three companions and have one of them do the driving it’s kind of fun for a while just setting a destination on the other side of the map and just stopping to check things out on the way, almost feels like co-op. and the spelunking and mountain climbing is alright. and I might as well just finish it now.
After witnessing how often success in the missions in Devil Survivor is dependant on the dipshit AI, I’m beginning to sour on the game
As someone whose first SMT game was Strange Journey, moving on to the next sub-series on the DS was a bad experience for me. I can’t stand Devil Survivor and I don’t understand what people see in it.
i honestly really like devil survivor 1, especially its story structure and how characters live or die based on actions and how the ending choice works out. like, I actually think it is the best realized implementation of SMT’s Morality System[tm] in the entire franchise, no joke.
yuzu is 10x more obnoxious in jp than in en though.
2, though, is just awful. i couldn’t stand it.
i’ll stand by this.
playing devil survivor as a teen I thought it was on the very cusp of acceptable degrees of anime, and looking back on it as a doubleteen I can see it was a messy herald of the end times
the tactical-operations nature is honestly a much better fit for demon uses outside of bosses, broader squads and particular roles much harder than the usual early power struggle giving way to pure-mood attrition and annoyance. those bosses themselves are still pretty fresh for their degree of overbearing gimmicks and choices for the series, though there’s a bit of centralizing approached involved due to the lack of desperately-required movement-boost demons, admittedly. the game trying to explicitly look at character living through the endtimes (questions of where people even eat or sleep in the city, for example) hits harder than the default post-apocalyptic-life of the present and which was a good experimental deviance from the (strong) SMT default of creation mythos + desolate majesty. the possibility of death rather than the inevitability of it with the death clocks and prophetic emails are pretty wonderful devices towards that, too.
…but of course, the female characters are handled as atrociously as their character portrait art suggests.
- starting single girl in the party is stuck with the reasonable and abrasively contrarian role of “just get the fuck out of the apocalypse” plus is a mechanical drag for much of the game due to moving slower
- of extremely-doomed escapist idiots, the boy is a chuuni fuck asserting judgment on everybody vs. the girl as airheaded cosplayer who threatens previously-held-down people because she thought talking people down was anticlimactic
- and outside of these half-joke characters there’s four seperate powerful authoratitve women who are manipulated and imperiled by greater forces with no way to assert agency without external help (Amane, Haru, Misaka, Mari)
I don’t have much fresh memories of earlier smt female characters but the Heroine and Hiroko and Chiaki and getting to choose a female character in IF were all a lot less inane than this?.. not so much Zelenin, admittedly.
also being locked into the default route of “escape and ruin everything” if one fails enough things is kinda boringly cruel, the “not-give-a-fuck” clashing demon art usage is bewildering, skills are biased hard against melee and limit character deployment / protag stat allocation, and while I never saw issues with it myself the fragility of AI partners seems maddening to others?
I’d probably consider replaying in Overclocked whenever one can emulate it but I suspect I’d grow tired enough of it to give up half way through.
also yeah 2 is straight up “persona influence is the default in smt now” anime idiots drama garbage
Why would you pick any class other than Strider in Dragon Dogma
I played this neat, tiny action-centric Zelda-like called LilianSword in my browser today and had a good time. The bosses are neat. In Japanese, but the Japanese text isn’t that important. Hold Z to use magic.
i played Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime for the first {space}time, at a party. It ruled
It’s kind of a dream game for me honestly. i’ve wanted a fleshed out vidcon about controlling a spaceship with a crew of other players since, ohh, i learned how to play videogames? and it’s stylistically right up my alley, very cute and appealing. and you rescue frogs and bunnies. So GOOD
i most enjoyed learning about and playing with new mechanics along with my friends. the Yamato cannon is the fuckin best, we settled on the METAL GEM upgrade which turns it into a giant buzzsaw, and we were so excited when the DOUBLE METAL GEM upgrade turned it into a bigger buzzsaw with smaller buzzsaws attached to it. it was everything we’d hoped for
I watched the 15 minute boss fight against The Stranger in God of War 2018 and now I so want to play this game. It was so sick, you guys. Someone play the game and tell me how much sickness like that is in the game
