here i am

Played a little of A Robot Named Fight, since it’s on sale for $2 and I had $2 worth of Nintendo Gold Coins or whatever to make it free.

It’s a super grotesque randomized Metroid roguelite, I guess? Finding certain areas and achieving certain things in the game alerts you that certain items will be seeded into future runs to help you get further.

I was doing OK but hit a point where I couldn’t work my way back past a crumbling floor and had to die. I guess it had to happen at some point, but that aspect of randomization is kind of a bummer!

Anyway it seems alright. Those enemies are just super unpleasant to look at/listen to.

Pathologic 2 is very close to being bleak and tedious in the right ways but it’s got a bit too much adventure game “I need X to do Y over here” going on given how harsh all of the systems are

like the economy and the decay and the cookie cutter building layouts and the way you have to look in every drawer of an armoire individually and the different factions and regions all work really well

but then it’ll be like “you need a scalpel to advance this questline” and I’ll have just sold my only one because I didn’t know that was an important near-irreplaceable item yet and the time wasted in trying to peck around and remedy that feels like it’s making your game state that much closer to unwinnable

(it also has a supremely weird implementation of game saves wherein you can only save at altars but you can reload any past save at any time)

also their culling appears to be broken to the extent that it runs basically OK when you’re outdoors but turns into a nauseating slideshow indoors

the english script is really polished though which is nice, and the somewhere-in-the-outer-steppe vibe is excellent, they really did succeed in bringing forward their original vision to this remake

when you’re in an area that’s become hostile to you (because you looted one too many armoires or because rumours have spread) you can semi-successfully avoid combat by trying not to make eye contact with anyone and that mechanic alone produces such a unique vibe, it’s so much more interesting than other videogame stealth, it’s like if agent 47 was the fugitive but being in first person adds that much more

it’s like 80% of the way to being a deconstruction of lawnmower sims in a way that actually works in its own right so I hope they haven’t already fired everyone after not making any money, it feels like such a doomed project, a remake of a game from an era in which it could barely exist to one in which it absolutely can’t, yet they’ve gotten so close

the real brilliance of this mechanic is how naturally the town’s hostility to you increases – you’re accused of a murder in the first 15 minutes of the game, and from that point on, rumours will naturally spread unless you work to counteract them, and there are fewer and fewer places that are safe for you to spend time, but of course you need to eat and drink, and it’s hard to take sustenance actions without exacerbating the hostility, and the most you can do sometimes is to hide your face and not look at anyone for more than a second.

it is so brilliantly done (and trivial to convey with basic first person navigation!), especially by comparison to artificial inflation of tension counters in a lot of newer tabletop-inspired designs, and the difficulty slider they tried to add after initial feedback was mixed totally ruins that. but it does have its share of other problems that make it a little too unpleasant.

i can’t believe taito never sued tomy for sl de ikou. it’s pretty much exactly the same as densha de go, but with steam trains. same controls, same evaluation points system, everything.
it is a lot easier than densha de go, in case you were in the market for a ps1 train game, but you’re mainly interested in watching low poly scenery go by while repetitive train noises play.

Day One,
in which a surgeon sells his tools of the trade and gets perplexed at the trouble that follows.

it’s one of like three things in your inventory that are highlighted for the urchins who buy sharps, that actually makes you more likely to sell it than if you were looking at all the junk you’re holding without any prompts!

I finally got the black panther equivalent in Bloodstained. I feel like I can easily just 100% this one, but idk what to play afterward!

It’s so fuckin sweet. In case you didn’t notice, you can also upgrade your high jump to get the other half of insane lategame speed

Playing Virtua Racing with both acceleration and steering mapped to the same input, the left stick, is kind of amazing. The car follows the exact path that I describe with the stick; however, I find it slows me down too much on corners. So I’m using the joy-con direction buttons with normal steering again, and I’ve switched back to manual transmission—turns out it has a slightly higher top speed than automatic.

I’ve drastically improved my Big Forest Normal rank: yesterday I made it up to 117! I made a few mistakes in that run, so I’m pretty sure I can break the top 100.

that sounds pretty realistic

i thought they were talking about me but it was actually about the boss of this maze

ive made it through six big labyrinths and five single-floor mazes! the last couple dungeons had log sliding over water puzzles, which took me forever. i suck at sokoban BUT I FUCKING DID IT

my favorite part of this game is planning movement to avoid bosses, its definitely the most rewarding mechanic, like oo im a genius i can even outsmart red aura FOES yeaaaa

now that im past level 40 i have MASTER skills and my party is really coming together as a nasty powerhouse.
i dont think ill get to dual-class til i beat the final boss though

which eo is this

i love eo i should play more of them, i’ve only really played like one and a half

is there a switch one in development yet

Seriously surprised we’re not at Etrian Odyssey 4 Untold Retold for Switch yet. Atlus was really churning these games out for a while.

I’ve improved my rank on Big Forest by quite a bit too today: now I am up to 421. I dunno how much better I can do than that unless I start trying to take that shortcut. I haven’t quite worked it out thought since it seems to slow me way down and usually resets me back to the position before going off the road

Good work!

I’ve only tried the shortcut once and it slowed me way down. I’m also not sure why the top replay I watched the other day only takes the shortcut on the first lap.
