Combat is basically like Fable or Beyond Good and Evil. Single button attacks/combos. Basic dodge with a huge window. Seemingly no combo modulation. Just the same thing over and over. Game seems real streamlined and even on Hard, lacks any real urgency. Something like that was excusable in Beyond Good and Evil. Because that game was small and full of character and had a good story. But this isn’t that.
Has a stealth/stealth kill mechanic similar to-----every game with super generous single button stealth kills. Bosses have QTE finishers similar to God of War.
The world is reasonably pretty, even considering its age. (it looks like a 1st gen 360 game). the visuals remind me of a mash of World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, and Fable. It pretty much directly apes Demon’s Souls Nexus idea for your character’s introduction. And they even call it “The Well of Souls”. It must be amazing to have created a series of games which affected the industry so much. Ripples which are still spreading, to this day.
I hear KoA is really long and has a ton of side-questing (not a bad thing). But I’m not sure the mechanics are of enough substance for me to go for it.
Not sure I’m gonna stick with it for long. But will play a bit more.
I think I need to replace my joycons, trying to play Phantasy Star again, and I am having that situation where it starts acting possessed by scrolling through the menus without me touching stuff, and walking back into shops when I leave etc.
I blame Dragon’s Dogma, goddamn click-stick-to-run and waggle-to-escape shenanigans
Lapis x Labyrinth is heavily flawed but it scratches a particular breed of number itch I didn’t know I had, it’s visually loud and bombastic and I’m enjoying it for now. Probably as close as I’m likely to come to a hack-and-slash Disgaea.
That game looks emphatically not for me, but I do like that they’re aping Kirby Superstar’s sound effects for attacking. Always thought that game’s sound design made its combat feel a lot more satisfying.
That is a great idea I am going to do when/if I get around to the expansion campaigns for 3.
Probably the most appealing thing about 2 is the branching structure that has a completely different middle act and like cuba said, there isn’t a right answer to any of the branches, though there is basically a correct answer to the choice that starts each fork.
Geralt as a hapless historical Forest Gump helps make the writing for the women shine a bit.
2 will also greatly enhance your enjoyment of 3. Several times in 3 I freaked out because an inconspicuous sidequest led in to following up on its subplots.
im like twelve hours into dream team and still getting tutorials. i just say no when they wanna teach me something and wing it at this point because most stuff is self explanatory
but I totally understand why no one finished this game now
weird to be enjoying Ocarina of Time for the first (ocarina of) time ever. I’m actually doing sidequests as they pop up because it’s fun. first time I played sevenish years ago I just forced my way through by obligation and internalized nothing, so this time around I remember practically nothing and am getting surprised by little rewards. it’s also surprising how many mandatory items require you to do out of the way minigames. zelda dungeons are also a lot smaller to me now that I’m 30, they used to look like huge investments. I still occasionally eat my own shit in combat due to somewhat clunky controls and I’m like what’s the deal and then I remember OH this is an N64 game.
Took a rest from watching videos of people fixing traffic in user-submitted cities and started a Cities: Skyline game. I’m bad at sandbox, I want goals damnit. Making my own goals by leaving plans/notes in the save game name.
Also I spent way too long in the asset editor replicating the highway junction that terrified me & the UK instructor insisted we go to every lesson. wow there’s a lot of websites about grade separated dumbbell intersections.
Been playing more Wargroove. It feels like a much slower game than Advance Wars. Individual turns take longer, and each match feels like it crawls along. The game is decent but the pacing is all wrong.
Working through the story of Monster Hunter World and I surprise myself by having fun in the moment to moment while playing because it’s the type of game I’m never in the mood for and have to convince myself to play. I thought I beat it but I only made it to high rank. I’m looking forward to getting to the end so I can not think about it anymore except to know that I had fun with it and it’s over. I’ve only ever played dual blades in previous MH games so I’m mixing it up this time with the great sword and I’m bad at it but it’s so satisfying.
I think I’ve nailed down a consistent Apex Legends squad and we’re placing top 3 almost every match. I’m hoping with more practice and consistency we’ll be winning pretty frequently.
Also I got to the second disc in Blue Dragon like a month ago and haven’t touched it since but I really wanna get back to it soon partly because the world map with the too-shallow depth of field feels like playing a ps360 era tech demo and it’s jarring in a fun way. The game feels like a more juvenile Dragon Quest and that’s fun!
