Some hero has been bringing a Magical Truck Adventure to the California Extreme pinball/arcade expo every year, so I’ve played it a couple times. Really fun stuff and I was amazed I’d never heard of it, but I guess they only manufactured like a hundred or them.

I love seeing this much production value being lavished upon such a silly idea.

I think it’s inspired by the rail scene in Laputa Castle in the Sky. Basically everything in Laputa got turned into a succesful videogame already, so they must’ve figured: why not this?

Yeah this was my biggest gripe with the Advance Wars series. I LOVE everything about the games. Except… the game balance. It’s very cute, stylish, well-polished, VERY satisfying (it’s got that meaty game crunch), and I like the unique flair of each commander giving the game a sort of personalized feel. But holy shit, the map designs get really stale. It’s straight up not fun to think you have every enemy under control, and then suddenly tanks and shit crawl out from under the fog in non-designated spaces. I am completely on board with unpredictability being a prominent element of a tactical game, but forcing your player to play a guessing game and ultimately having them redo the stage doesn’t work for that type of game!!

Ran RONIN fast, captured a decent video of it that I’m satisfied with. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x78il6RNEXw

As an aside, setting up a new channel is hella revealing on what newcomers see. Highly viral videos in the recommendations that just so happen to feature Jordan Peterson, Ben Shapiro and Jacob Rees-Mogg in different positive lights. It’s kind of creepy!

yeah it seems like if you go anywhere near videogames it’s just a neverending sea of right-wingers

great work youtube

I hit “show more” and it threw at me a bunch of Russian non-gaming videos. And a single recommendation for “Yahweh | Acoustic | Elevation Worship” which, I guess you figured me out Google; just a hint of religion lurking in the background. Anyway, algorithms suck.

To be fair it is also always tracking your IP, your machine IP, etc.

It’s very Nintendo pre-2015? to have these unresolved systems design issues just lurking in the game and kept around because it always was thus and wasn’t actually on fire. I think of the frustratingly totemic nature of the Mario lives, the Zelda economy and dungeon pacing, the Metroid upgrade items, and the Wars’ level scripting is right alongside them.

I feel like an infusion of new blood post 2010, maybe the dabbling in mobile games and partnerships with mobile-native companies like GungHo has taught them to extract some modern systems design – Breath of the Wild is shockingly conversant in modern open-world games, even as it is confident enough to argue and dismiss doctrines it brings in and still adopt an economy balanced at 1, 5, 10, 50 hours.

Nothing freaked me out as much as when, the week I started my current job, all of my YouTube ads became about nicotine patches because one of my coworkers was watching music videos at work all day and trying to quit smoking

what’s the deal with this, is it just steinsgate 1 but with all the anime added in?

Pretty much, yeah.

I’ve been playing Iconoclasts these past few days because I got it free with PS+ and it was mentioned a week or two back around here and… it’s okay? A bit on the easy side and so far utterly inessential, but it hasn’t been a bad way to spend an hour or so at a time.

For some reason these heavily influenced by Genesis games action platformers (thinking mainly of this game and Freedom Planet) just can’t shut up and will just go on talking and talking for ages at a time which is by far the biggest mark against either. The story in this game is slightly the stronger of the two but it is all a bit much. I’d say the game itself is a bit stronger of the two but I’m generally the low vote when it comes to Freedom Planet so YMMV.

I also started up TIS-100 today and I fear this might have been a mistake as I have zero programming background. That said I’ve made it through the first three puzzles without crying which I take as a kind of victory.

You don’t need to know anything about programming to enjoy Zachtronics games. That being said, I’d recommend starting with SHENZHEN I/O or especially Exapunks instead, as they’re both more accessible and more fun, but still have you write your own code.

Hot take: the only good programming game is Factorio

My buddy hadn’t done any programming before and beat all the main levels in TIS-100 so you can do it!

Personally I’d recommend Opus Magnum. It teaches programming the way SICP does, which is to say it teaches you how to BE a programmer, not just teaching you code.
