I played TR1 in like 2017, but to me the controls and the visuals were a big part of the appeal. The movement is clunky but it is precise, you just gotta be deliberate with it. The ambiance of a low poly tomb, with almost no life around at all, haunted by echoes and digital reverb… chef’s kiss! I have only played Tomb Raider Legend from that era of HD Tomb Raider games, but I imagine it’s similar to Anniversary since they came out so close together. If it is, I expect it plays better but feels a lot blander, less exciting and threatening than that sort of tomb raiding adventure should be.
think it’s just game of thrones
Legend sucks huge ass. Anniversary basically ports Legend’s control scheme back to TR1’s level design. It’s much better. I agree playing the real first game is a straight up better experience, but not everyone has the same tolerance for the 3d cinematic platformer controls.
I think the second best Tomb Raider game is actually Underworld? Probably? Which came in one of the later waves of reboots, after Anniversary I think. Probably the prettiest Tomb Raider, and has some legit decent puzzles. Combat is not great but at least it’s painless.
TR2 is probably the next best, and it’s like the SMB2J to TR1, but ruined by having too many human shooting enemies. You have to play with like infinite medpacs and ammo cheats so you can just kill everything without worry and instead focus on the insane platforming puzzles that demand total mastery of Lara’s moveset.
God. The combat in the original Tomb Raider games is just so dumb. Nothing should take that many rounds from TWO huge pistols. Especially if they’re fired mid-sommersault.
And Underworld always looked like the best of those three. It seemed like the creepiest too, which is sort of what I go to these games in search of.
Edit: lmao I just went searching for Underworld vidz cause I’ve never seen it really, and I just stumbled upon one your walkthroughs Cuba. I was like this sounds like Cuba from No Rangers Allowed. Whaddya know. Small internet.
agree with cuba (!!) couldn’t finish Legend, too much bloodshed.
i think all Tomb Raider games would be improved by removing the human enemies (??)
Tomb Raider Anniversary has mildly interesting audio commentary which is built into the game, i think you might have to unlock it, but i thought it was a good way to present that information, letting you hear about the design of stuff as you play it.
Can’t think of any other games which I’ve seen that in.
Firewatch has that too.
As far as I know this originated in Half-Life: Lost Coast, which itself was a tech demo Valve inexplicably put time into to make it user-suitable and then wanted to figure out how to talk to people through it.
The first developer commentary track I encountered was that Star Wars Rogue Squadron game. I thought it was in the N64 version but apparently I misremembered (that would have been some technical feat even for Factor 5). It’s definitely in the Gamecube version. I want to see more of this!
Ah, good call
So I only slightly misremembered a commentary appearing in an N64 Star Wars game. Episode I: Battle for Naboo had one!
Is anyone playing FF Crystal Chronicles? I have heard there are problems, but Im holding out hope
There’s a thread for it: crystal chronic
Spelunker Party rules. Thanks for the game @HOBO
got gunstar super heroes again, im still decent at it somehow
i don’t want to sound like reddit but the problems are a draaaaag, i’m really hoping there’s a patch or something
I played Tomb Raider a good bit after it came out and enjoyed it a good deal, but I tried Tomb Raider II last year and it was a huge drag that I had to give up on after four or so levels even with basically infinite health packs and ammo for the last level or two. None of those levels were really in a tomb either, I guess the opening one wasn’t that far off.
Anyway even though I asked about Tomb Raider that ain’t what I played NEXT because I’m annoying
I had just finished using my Playstation 4 game console to stream some TV shows because most of the time it’s just an extra large Roku as far as we’re concerned, but I said “By God I’m going to play some Video Games on this thing” and I played about 10-20 minutes of each of the following before deleting them off my hard drive:
We Are Doomed which is twin-stick shooter in the mold of Geometry Wars which tries to distinguish itself somewhat but I confess it didn’t grab me. One notable difference is your weapon is a “beam” which the way its rendered reminds me more of a flamethrower so you have limited range on your attacks. Meh/10
Super Exploding Zoo which is like a puzzle game with (extremely) light Pikimin mechanics wherein you must destroy slowly encroaching monsters with the exploding animals under your control. I assume it ramps up as it goes along but after a few levels I decided to move on. Looked and felt like a Flash game but not in a way that made me feel nostalgic for 2006/10
Hue is a platformer with color-swapping mechanics where choosing a color off the wheel (which you slowly unlock as your progress through the game) reveals or banishes boxes/platforms/doors and I reached a point where it was pleasantly complicated. BUT OY the game subjects you to this pseudo-philosophical voiceover and I think if I could have a break from indie games narrated by posh Brits for a while I’d be okay with it. Game is also aesthetically very basic so that didn’t provide me with any incentive to keep trundling along. I’d Even Welcome a Boston Accent/10
how the fuck do you play advanced guardian heroes
my friends gave me some bezos bux so i used them to buy the first 2 Thief games because i guess i’m gonna house a bunch of PC classics this month
im about halfway through Thief Gold and ive gotten lost for 20+ minutes at least once per level so far. It owns
I like the Tomb Raider-y levels where you avoid zombies and plunder shit, my understanding is they kinda dropped those in 2 but it feels shockingly good to move Garrett around and do platforming. Like for a floating camera he has remarkable weight and friction
Between this and Deus Ex i realized i’m gonna need a lot more games to take place completely at night, please and thanks.
Isn’t this game famously buggy on emulation?
