Games You Played Today: Actress Again: Current Code (Part 1)

there are a couple of cave joints off the top of my head where the third stage or at least the boss are the most difficult bit even

The one Cave game off the top of my head where the third stage well and truly annihilates me every time is ESPRade with its insanely fast bullets. The others I’ve been able to muddle through with practice

The third stage of Guwange is so sweet, with the night having fallen, the field of heads in jars, the spider cat boss, and yeah the fact that it does force you into a dance-like flow state of mostly memorized right moves with slight adjustments to avoid losing your balance

Using my incredible powers to play through Metal Gear Solid in Japanese on the PSMini.

Wow the storytelling in this is incredible. At the time it was called cinematic but it was a brand new form of telling a story. The camera doesn’t move like a movie camera. It’s so dynamic and cool and confident.

The Japanese voice acting being made up of the guys that dubbed Western Action Movies really gives it a different mood and for my part not for the better. I want the sweet delicous ham of the English Dub. Cyborg Ninja is voiced by the same as the big bad in Policenauts and his performance is really muted. You don’t get ā€œTHIS IS THE PAIN I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR.ā€ He does not carry when the suit bugs out.

I’ve also accidentally skipped both FoxDie! Deaths.

It has the equalizing of a dub done cheap and quick where the English dub echos in my mind. Next time I play is Psycho Mantis.

Fast and Furious Crossroads is a gem. The enjoyably bad movie game genre lives on through its extreme voice acting and bizarre physics.

You can shunt vehicles and there’s no penalty for destroying civilian motorists. When hit they just blast off-screen with the force of a train as your car awkwardly snaps forward - invincibly and without warning.

Some juicy voice lines and delivery here as well.

Vin Diesel doesn’t do second takes:

A mission where you have to avoid excavator blades:

The final mission has a poetic notion of physics:

Thoroughly recommend as a throwback to when this kind of game was more common.

My guess from that still image is that it’s not about dodging, it’s about moving slowly clockwise with the pattern?

replaying a bunch of psx games because i fell backwards into a game club that is currently playing suikoden. suikoden’s cool and all, but the real star of my playstation at the moment is ridge racer type 4, baby!!! still looks sick as hell even now, with some of the best atmosphere i’ve seen in any game, let alone a racing game. the fact that the final race takes place 15 minutes before new years is something that scratches an itch in my brain i didn’t realize i had (i say this as though i don’t already own this game and haven’t been playing it since i was a teenager back in '98).

there is also a single-seater you can drive! i will assume this is an f1 car, even if namco didn’t intend it to be.

racing games need to bring back the whole concept of a story mode. like, the stories in this game are all pretty basic, in terms of writing and presentation, but at least the characters have a motivation and a purpose for being there and wanting to win. bringing some narrative drama into a sport that’s already pretty dramatic to begin with would be awesome.

I haven’t played this specific ddp, but in doj the bullet hurtboxes are just as tiny as your ships hitbox which means you have a lot more space than you think towards the bottom of the screen. Also play Ketsui!

Yes I understand how hitboxes work

I’m saying the boss is

LITERALLY Impossible
his health does not go down. is this just a final boss to see how high you can get your score before being defeated?

battletoads 2020: they made a decent beat 'em up engine and then decide to only use it for a quarter of the game. the entire third act is a hour of alternating twin stick shooting and block push platforming. when they do manage to throw you into a belt scroll level they ruin the pacing with constant door hacking mini games and punctuate them with wait-your-turn bosses. making the entire enterprise almost unbearable is the high iq comedic writing which finds the exact worse tone possible between late 00’s comedy central original adult cartoon and contemporary cartoon network. i just want to punch things, not to watch ten minute cut scenes.
