Games You Played Today: Actress Again: Current Code (Part 1)

yeah playing with a character you feel drawn to is the key to enjoying a fighting game imo. no need to think about tiers or whatever until you reach a certain degree of brain poisoning

Finally figured out how to play RUINER. I’ve tried on and off for a couple years now and found the controls to be frustrating, but I got it now. It’s a pretty fun game, although kind of par for the course action-violence like Hotline Miami or whatever. Still, the zone-out state that genre is so good at sending you to is characterized by a patient brutality that I think is unique to this one. The soundtrack with its incessant pulse and deep low-ends does a lot of the work. And everything about the way the game looks is really cohesive and just super well done I think.

But also - and this I’m kind of torn on - having a sadistic anime gf calling me Puppy and commanding me to come back from the dead is just the right motivator. I can’t rightfully say it’s that different or less toxic, but I am reminded of like that weird thing where women characters in the 80s and 90s emasculated players just to get them to buy the game, hit continue or have any sense of purpose to play through the levels at all. None of it is sexualized or specifically gendered, though. Maybe what it’s doing is making it extremely obvious how fucking weird it was that games explicitly targeted masculinity to create shame and feelings of subordination, when there are so many other interesting ways you could do it, even in video games.

It’s weird, but a big difference here I think is that she is clearly manipulating you and there’s nothing wry about it. It may turn out that she’s manipulating to some good end, even. I haven’t finished the game yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this power dynamic works for the player character and their gf. I don’t know!!!

I remember another poster getting to this area. I remember thinking at the time, looking at the screenshot, that the backgrounds were prerendered.

The level geometry rules.

Completed SOR4 with Floyd on Mania Arcade mode with two lives to spare, and while it wasn’t particularly easy he can certainly power through the nastier sections in the game. I’ll leave Axel for when he gets buffed in the forthcoming patch but poor Cherry could really use some fine-tuning

It rules that Xanadu Next has become SB canon

If we have an N-Gage section on the wiki we should add Xanadu Next as the only entry
