Games You Played Today: Actress Again: Current Code (Part 1)

All of Crash 1’s bullshit is laid bare once you attempt to acquire one of the game’s precious, special gems

Guess I just beat Chapter 1 of MGS5 which seemed like a whole game to me. I’m loving it frankly. When is this supposed to get bad? I mean except Quiet, Quiet is obviously bad.

MGSV is very good.

I had this impression that people didn’t like the story or said it was half finished or something. I mean apparently I haven’t finished it but finishing that first “chapter” was substantial and satisfying enough that I don’t know what else could happen to give me an “unfinished” vibe.

You’ll know it when you get there.

it’s not unfinished, it’s just a different type of game - intentionally interstitial and inconsequential in the context of the broad timeline. don’t worry too much about the narrative, it’s so comfy and soothing to play. legit helped me not hurt myself in november.

Oh but I love the narrative.

Maybe the disconnect is that I cannot imagine being frustrated by a story that is “inconsequential in the context of the broad Metal Gear Solid timeline”. Like didn’t 4 prove once and for all no one should ever care about that again

oh to be clear i 100% agree, it’s one of my favorites for that reason. i love specifically how ephemeral and anticlimactic it is in substance, it’s just not the sort of thing that 6 hour long youtube explainer videos are made of (like 4 is, and it’s atrocious).

anyway, we played some panzer dragoon zwei today. panzer dragoon zwei is ridiculously good. the infinite scrolling tv static expanse.

thematically and mechanically 5 is very good! It’s more that when they try to actually do discursive storytelling in the latter half (or arguably like latter 2/3) of the game they keep proving they can’t do it anymore and it’s frustrating

Played some Nioh 2 today to take a break from strategy for a bit. There’s so much videogame shit going on in here it kind of rules. My brain is kind of glazing over at a lot of it but the basic combat feels really nice to execute well so I’m sure I’ll get to the point where I understand the 3-6 different kinds of character progression by osmosis soon enough.

Actually, has any reasonably interesting person made it a project for themselves to play every Metal Gear game in diegetic chronological order and then write their impressions? That seems like it could be fruitful

MGS is better when it sets its sights lower

Crash 1 is charmingly anachronistic to a fault

i promised myself i wouldn’t make another longpost about heat signature so i won’t, but it’s literally all i’ve been playing (except for a spot of dragon quest builders 2)

suffice to say i’m almost done liberating the galaxy and then i’m turning this motherfucker off

I really dig Nioh 2 and dig the Nioh series in general. Those games are extremely video gamey! The added stuff in 2 can be almost completely ignored if you like, or you can embrace it. I did a little of both at various times during my playthrough.

I guess his instantly kill car power was better than my instant kill car power. Literally snatch the car off it’s tires.

On the back of all my war moviing I played MGS1, 2 and 4 in the last two years. It was pretty frutiful.

This is good isn’t it.

I could never get into dragons dogma but this time I got the vanilla version.

  • Hopefully will be uglier textures/lighting
  • Forces me to play in English dub for true capcom experience
  • Title screen music gets me extremely hyped rather than bad mood

Just jumping into GYPT to say that 13 Sentinels is so much better than it has any right to be. I’m nearing the 2/3 completion mark and I just love the narrative complexity, the ambition, the way you get to just pick Destruction or Remembrance or Analysis to prioritize how you wanna approach the game, so people like me who never had a whole lot of use for pacing mechanisms like combat can just binge the story segments as much as possible. Like I said in the 13 Sentinels thread, I’ve been watching these two guys do a Let’s Play through the game segments as I’ve been completing them, and one guy said that the advertisement for this game should have just been video of people reacting to the game’s twists, and yeah, that would have been amazing. I am aggravated that the buzz for this wasn’t high enough to get me to play it earlier.
