Games You Played Today: Actress Again: Current Code (Part 1)

I love dioramas but virtually all of sakaguchi’s projects since he left square have been deliberate to a fault (not unlike Matsuno’s 3ds game) so I’m reserving judgment

3d dot game heroes aesthetic was so far beyond the curve we can’t even really say it was ahead of its time yet

the re-appraisal of that game is blasphemous, tho

I bought it for the aesthetic and enjoyed it but it’s really not good or thought out in any significant way

A few years after I saw that company running a GDC booth promoting a raytracing engine…on 4 1080TIs. well that’s useful, I thought

Yeah not a great game but a very cool look. Imagine if Minecraft looked that good

in 2011 I was spending a year working on a voxel art game; Minecraft was just bursting but restricted; 3D Dot Game Heroes was limited but knew how to push screen effects past rational bounds to create a new aesthetic. But the best-looking comparison point we had was Lexaloffle’s (Pico-8) Voxatron:

g_boom

They never finished it (really, they were always more toy programmers than game designers) but their commitment to pixel animations (frame-by-frame model swapping like pixel art instead of rotating body parts like a Flash game, like almost every post-Minecraft game does) and persistent explosive debris was inspiring.

bungie is having a really hard time trying to figure out if their game should be totally ephemeral or if content should maybe stick around for a while

they literally just spent a year removing content from the game, capstoning it with removing OVER HALF OF THE PAID CONTENT FROM YEARS 1-3, and now they’re like “maybe that was a bad idea”

good lord this game. and yet i still play it

I laughed. Yeah I do think this is precisely the moment dioramas have gone too far

I mean the game looks gorgeous but the way the dioramas are unmistakably miniature is completely at odds with the regular RPG vibe they’re going for there, unless all the characters are Smurf sized
And I don’t expect them to make 1000s of sets so expect very few places + copy pasted dungeon corridors

Finally succeeded in my almost-literally half-cocked attempts to beat the final boss in Breath of the Wild, and it strikes me just how fitting a companion game it is to Romancing SaGa 3, which was my focus immediately prior. Not that one can consider them singular in their approaches, or even that one could draw a direct line between the two games, in terms of saying one inspired the other–especially given the existence of the original Zelda–but it’s pleasing to have obtained a snapshot of the evolution of nonlinear narratives in narrative-heavy games. They’re both real good.

Ok I get what everyone has said about MGS5’s more Japanese, level-designed take on open world and basically agree but I do think to a decent extent what openness there is is not hugely well-utilized and honestly I’d rather the game was just broken up into levels in traditional MGS fashion.

I love the way Big Boss almost never talks and all his words and actions reveal him to be an evil piece of shit, this is the first time in all the post-2 games that I actually feel like I’m playing the bad guy of the first couple games. I can see him, recognize him. The only thing that would make it better is if they really committed and did an actual silent protagonist. They’re so close. But of course Kojima could never do such a thing.

I love how the post-Fulton pickup torture scenes are shot like Big Boss is trying to get a word in but just, I don’t know, can’t, and the camera guy would like to point at what’s going on but somehow they got distracted and, whoops, guess we’re not in the room anymore and we’ll just imagine it was all a misunderstanding and I’m sure we can all just agree to rationalize it as Ocelot’s persuasion skills. He’s so charming!

MGSV uses the characteristic Metal Gear silliness to reinforce this, too. It’s not serious, everyone’s just a bunch of goofs! This is all totally normal behavior.

Cuba I need you to watch Wild Geese (which is pretty much Phantom Pain the movie) and the find which in-game base they copied from Wild Geese.

Wild Geese is a pretty alright movie at that!

the biggest difference between ikaruga and daifukkatsu is that the former is simpler and more elegant and at the same time breaks my brain about 10 times harder
