Games You Played Today: Actress Again: Current Code (Part 1)

Have you played Chrono Triggr before? The load times on the PS1 release are truly awful.

That’s interesting; I’ve only ever seen black North American discs.

I think Stanley Parable is incredibly valuable as a The Last Meta Game. They did all the different things you can do, nobody has to make one of these ever again because Stanley Parable had it covered, they did it already.

Yeah I think the only silver discs may be Square Enix reprints from the PS2 era or beyond. Think they were the only publisher keeping PSX games in print and they reached a point where black CDs either wasn’t possible or not worth the cost.

I remember the Stanley Parable demo being a different, much more palatable game. I think it was just a series of dumb gags? I absolutely loathed the retail version.

I don’t think you miss anything for not playing a passive-aggressive & more boring version of Portal

i am playing super adventure island 2. it’s really weird and cool. the wonder boy/adventure island/monster world/…dynastic hero?? series(es) is just always enjoyable and this is one of the most extensively RPG-like ones

got that search-action stuff going on too. i like the maps! very confusing though

Started Sam & Max: Hit the Road last night. I love him, but his teeth make him actually kind of scary lol. Very funny but also disturbing that he removed this dude’s head and then had the realization that he was a robot… He was removing his head anyway.

Also I played through one game of Maniac Mansion and got the ending with Bernard on the NES port. And that game was pretty cool. May run through it with one other character on one of the PC versions, because the design of it can probably only be appreciated if you play through with multiple characters. But I get the impression that the basic puzzle sequence is pretty complex if it has built into it all these character specific tangents. And yeah @wourme Dave’s song is seriously good in that port.

chrono cross won’t load on my ps3 for some reason. just goes to a black screen.

so i guess i’ll have to wait until i make space to get out my modded ps1

That’s weird, I recently ran Chrono Cross without issue from a PSX disc on my fat PS3. I guess there are some variables in terms of which release and which type of PS3 but the game does work. Maybe clean off the disc?

I got Dicey Dungeons and it’s pretty great! It’s essentially a chiller version of Slay the Spire since your options are much more limited and dice seem less random than a deck of +10 cards. Messing with load outs feels almost like a Zachtronics game, as if I’m trying to create an efficient machine for twisting the odds and killing my opponent.

This is my most graceful machine:

Explanation

Freezing dice transforms them into 1-value dice. When you are hit with Vanish, duplicates are eliminated. By freezing all of my opponents dice and hitting them with vanish, they are left with a single 1-value die.

It’s easier than Slay the Spire but has a faster pace. The in-game frame is that you are on a game show and each playthrough takes the length of an episode. To compensate for the short length, there’s a lot of variety. The six characters have increasingly complex systems at their disposal and each has six progressively difficult episodes to try.

Yesterday, I binged through all of the warrior’s episodes in one day. I’m gonna try to restrict myself to an episode a day from now on.

I got two games for Christmas and I think they’re sort of representative of two ends of the third person video game spectrum:

  • Control is fucking incredible but my graphics card hurts, you probably already knew that
  • Agents of Mayhem is a compromised as hell trainwreck which really does seem like it was forced to dramatically pivot in concept late in development and couldn’t stick the landing at all, and while there’s nominally some Saints-y gameplay in here the writing is, well, it seems like they were aiming for Archer (as contrasted with Saints Row) and missed by a fucking mile

Just to state the obvious you know PS1 on PS3 is region locked?

my ps3 is modded and plays all my jp games fine

Played through all of the levels of Stinkoman 20X6 on Homestar Runner with the new update. On the classic mode even because I needed it all. Don’t think I ever made it past level 3 back in the day? It was bad, clunky and had a bunch of weird slowdown in places but I still got what I wanted out of it. A short reliving of nostalgia and some closure in my head to one of the last remnants of the Internet from my youth that’s now going away with Flash. Like weirdly more at peace with it now.
