vibing with Space Manbow (MSX2+, 1989). it’s only real flaw is the MSX-limited chunky faux-scrolling. otherwise a masterpiece in every regard
the soundtrack is impossibly good konami stuff

played cuphead over steam remote play and man that game is not great with 5+ frames of lag. still fun though
i would cautiously echo the recommendation of travis strikes again. it’s not quite just indie game: the game of the games or whatever it was being angled as pre-release
i also played it recently, and got a lot from it, even if i don’t love it.
i think it works as a critique of current ‘indie games’ more than a love letter to those games.
you can also make travis wear a rain world shirt for the whole thing.
Katamari Damacy REROLL is joy
I’ve been playing this, too, now that it’s finally on PS4. I’ve now purchased Katamari Damacy on three different PlayStations. I would say it’s the game I’ve re-bought the most, but I think it’s tied with Symphony of the Night.
I wish they had retrofitted the game with that rainbow text indicating that you have picked something up for the first time. I’m sure I’m going to forget to explicitly save my game, but that doesn’t really matter.
the u-t ueno dungeon in metal max xeno is too hard boo hoo
Got Rym 9000 which was on my wishlist for some reason and uh
it’s really overwhelming but i love it
Only played it for 20 minutes but so far i’ve gotten my $2 worth
I can’t get anywhere in that game but I also love it.
Just Cause 4 is the best Just Cause and it’s a PS+ game this month so make sure you jump on that to get it in your library even if you don’t play it yet.
I am playing it for the second time now and I think it just does the open world thing the right way. I’m noticing a trend in open worlders where the best ones are the ones that have little in the way of “authored” content like story missions and stuff that get in the way of the dynamic systemic stuff and also have some sort of territory-conquering mechanic.
Just Cause 4 breaks down into a few different “tiers”. At the top, broadest level there’s this expansionist territory capturing thing where you do a mission to further the agenda of the rebel group you’re helping. Sometimes it’s helping scientists escape, sometimes it’s taking over a military base or taxiing a character around to different locations so they can hack a computer or whatever. Basically the map is broken out into various sections and each time you successfully complete one of these missions you gain more rebel support which lets you advance your front line to include that particular section of map.
After you’ve taken it over it opens up the next tier of stuff which are all the side missions and challenge missions that test your ability at wing suiting or piloting a vehicle through a stunt or whatever. There’s also some collectible stuff that falls into this as well but it’s all just there in the background waiting for you whenever you either finish the story mode with all the territory capturing or just want a break from it and do something different.
Eventually you conquer the whole map and get the ability to use a weather modification weapon that generates tornadoes and you can steer them in a particular direction by placing the weather generator machine things in the world. You can send a tornado wherever you want it’s amazing because it’s not canned it’s an actual simulated tornado and everything.
Another tier is the grapple hook. There’s a whole customization menu just for the grappling hook. You can have three active loadouts with different stuff active at any time that you switch between using the dpad. Basically you have an air lifter MGSV-style weather balloon thing that can lift stuff up, a retractor thing that pulls two objects together and a rocket booster thing that will launch stuff forward. And all three have different options to tweak so like I’ve got my retractor set up so that when both ends of my line fully retract and touch each other they explode. This means I can shoot lines on dudes and objects and stuff and they’ll explode on contact without whatever I attach the other end of the line to. It’s great fun and very smart of them to have that be the first thing you unlock for the retractor mod.
Another thing that is really great is the wing suit. It just feels better than ever to fly around in this game. It probably helps that the game runs a lot better than Just Cause 3 does but I think they tweaked the flying so that it’s a bit easier to stay in the air. I love just flying around with the wing suit and grapple. There’s also a DLC like in the last game that gives your wing suit a jet pack, rockets and a machine gun so you can just literally fly around like Iron Man dive bombing everything.
I think there was something else I was going to talk about but I paused while writing this to do something else and now I’ve forgotten it. Oh well more of you should play Just Cause 4. Particularly those of you on my friends list on PS4 should play it so I will have more than just a couple people’s high scores to smash.
nice! i will play this.
i think just cause 3 was the last open world game in this model that i had a good time with. it’s not great, but was the right amount of satisfying to just take control of one map area at a time. you could also do that before any of the story missions, and then just breeze through them later with barely any enemies spawning.
The Dungeon Of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet Of Chaos (what the heck with that name?) just locked me on the level up menu and I had to force quit but I plan on picking it up again soon and replaying the unsaved battles. The free demo was fun enough for me to wishlist and since I was floundering for some light fun (also on sale for $28) I pulled the trigger.
The voice acting combined with an awkward localization (from French I think) of an already corny script is alternating between charm and cringe. Occasional groan-worthy outdated gamer references and incongruous clacks of blue language are unfortunate. The lady character designs are… a bit one-note horny. There are several issues.
While the over-arching story is strange and interesting enough to be somewhat compelling, the game-play is clicking for me - BIGTIME. Combat encounters are all scripted and well staged, book-ended by cut-scenes and so far feel lovingly designed. Of the dozen or so I have played each had a nice variety of enemies and allow for different approaches.
You control up to 6(!) characters at once which is the correct minimum number of characters in a tactical combat team. Here’s hoping they allow even bigger parties in the mix later. I always fall on the side of having a bunch of moderately weak specialists as opposed to the heroic jack of all trades a lot of party on a grid games prefer.
The tutorial is very long and disruptive but does a good job covering everything you need to know. There are some interesting and different approaches going on and you WILL hear about them. The stats and skills are sufficiently crunchy. Some nice multiplication formulae definitely hint at imbalance but we will see where that goes. It’s starts off nicely balanced. I’m on the bump above the normal difficulty and the challenge feels pretty good.
There is a nice feature that I haven’t seen in a party based game for a while. The paper-doll aspect of armor is something that I miss in every RPG that doesn’t have it. Well, it’s a bit limited in that armor pieces can only be used on specific party members but for some reason I find it really satisfying even when there are new clothes to see (Guh, the things I’d do for a CRPG with the resources and willingness to bring back the paper doll game from Dragon Age:Origins). It’s a nice touch.
SO YEAH, we’ll see where this goes
super night riders is a 2012 xbox live indie game that has somehow manifest on my ps4 in 2020. it plays and looks ok, but the time limits are just a little too strict.
demon’s tilt is a very high quality game, and i’m looking forward to unearthing what seems like a whole iceberg of stuff hidden in there. also, if i ever get a switch, i’m buying this game again, as it seems like it would be greatly improved by playing on a tated switch with flipgrip.
ys origins, having much of your ui consist of superfluous gauges that show all of your various multipliers…i like this, it’s very japanese pc game
new genshin update just dropped, i wish this game wasnt a friggen gacha so i could recommend it to people
Played about 25 minutes of Post Void, another Overwhelming Aesthetic game but in the form of a super fast roguelike FPS. I like that the runs are, so far, less than 3 minutes, and that the first level remains interesting every time (which is always the problem I have with roguelikes)
I don’t think I can play more than 20-30 minutes of this in one go, much like Rym 9000, but it’s certainly a memorable experience. Would also recommend it at $2, and it has better accessibility options than Cyberpunk, i.e. you can turn off the flashing images.
speaking of Post Void… since i have no idea where else to post it, here’s my annual image of recommended games this year. this is stuff that i’ve either played some of or have enough confidence that it seems cool to recommend:
uh also here’s the image on its own:
Post Void rules, yeah.
playing tactical nexus right now, one of the chapter 4 maps which consists of only two floors, but the floors are so tightly packed looking at the screen for just a few minutes overheats the laptop and shuts it down, so i’m carefully doing a few moves while alt-tabbing to other stuff to let it cool back down.
it’s very likely i shouldn’t be doing this at all
please look at this garbage. when you start literally every space is filled with something, except exactly one empty space excluding the player. can you find it? when i start this map the game is lagging until i’ve emptied enough of it.
the second floor has more empty spaces but lags worse somehow. maybe cause it also adds a bunch of sparkly/glowy special effects? this one burns out my laptop within 5 minutes so i need to play it carefully
