Games You Played Today: Actress Again: Current Code (Part 1)

When I hand a controller to my sister and she stares at for 5+ seconds every time there’s a button prompt I think “man video games sure are stupid.”

“Where’s L3?”

I love the Nintendo full button display! It’s a clever intuitive solution that’s accessible for new people and extremely good if you switch between all three main controller layouts constantly.

I have played video games all my life and L3 threw me.

Playing SOTN on my PS4 with my Hori Fighting Commander was a trip because I have a controller with 12+ buttons, but I can’t bring up the map. I had to switch to the DualShock 4 so I’d have that stupid touch pad.

Yeah, One Hour One Life is pretty cool!

Wrote this about it a while ago:

I did have a good time with it, but I didn’t play it a whole ton. I think he’s added a lot of features to keep civilizations going longer than when I played. That’s probably good for the game in the long term since then you can actually experience some of the late-game features. I do wonder if you lose some of relationship aspect that way – depends on how big the settlements are on average.

In the interim since I played the game, I do regret looking at Rohrer’s twitter.

oh my god, i forgot that he’s the same guy who made The Castle Doctrine, it seems like he recently must have wiped his twitter, all there is now is a few tweets, one of them being a link to a Jordan Peterson adjacent vid lol

I just realized the truck you spawn next to when you start State of Decay 2 not only works, but already has a bunch of supplies in it. Instead of running straight for the safehouse as I had been doing, I jumped into the truck with my crew and collected some more resources so my survivors aren’t as miserable this time around. I used some frag grenades to kill the first plague heart, and then proceeded to waste my last two grenades because I keep hitting R1 to run but R1 is quick use an item not run, so.

It’s night now, and I stepped outside to try to go collect my truck (since I accidentally ran into a bloated zombie which gassed my truck so I hopped out but my guy was fatigued as hell so I just hauled ass to my safehouse leaving my truck) and I see not too far from my safehouse dozens of red glowing dots in the darkness, so I turned around and went back inside the safehouse. Guess I’m waiting to get my truck.

Nise Rae Dawn Chong has imposter syndrome.

Nobody trusts Shady Allie.

How can you not bring Turtle with you? Bao Er is my favorite because she has a perpetual smile on her face and she idles in the community screen by punching her fist like a toughie but she has that grimace on her face.

This game does a very poor job of explaining its controls.

To iterate on this, your stats start diminishing after level 40, so a general strategy for leveling is to avoid putting points into strength/dex until your weapon is +10 (or another ascension of your choice) since that will give you more weapon damage early on than if you had just put points into strength/dex, and then leveling endurance to 40 if you want more mobility in armor, or vitality to 40 if you want more hp.

after that, THEN you start leveling your weapon scaling stats. another reason for this aside from weapon/armor being more efficient to upgrade than stats is because you don’t actually know what weapon you’ll want to use by the end of the game. there are players who stick to a specific weapon build for their entire run, but you never know if you might come across a boss soul that you think looks cool, or some other weapon with a really wacky stat requirement that you didn’t expect to enjoy using.

if you’re a sorcerer you just ignore that and only build intelligence because int scaling on sorceries is completely bonkers and there’s a spear you can get in late game that has int scaling for damage which is ??? like “haha i am so smart at using this spear”

re. controllers, i sometimes feel like the main appeal of videogames is just “pushing a button and watching something happen”, which is such a weird and transient pleasure that it only lasts like a second before evaporating, and that the only way to build this feeling is by pushing the button again or pushing a different button. a videogame is a conspiracy of buttons in which everything it’s doing is just a pretext to get you to push another button every few seconds. the difficulty of doing anything with this weird mirror-stage moment of recognition besides repeating or prolonging it can be seen in the slow spread of the button system into ever more arcane combinatorial networks, including cursed concepts such as “zl” and “r3”, like a fungus colony overtaking a tree…

well, this is what i tell myself whenever i accidentally push in the analogue stick and cause my guy to crouch motionlessly or open a menu while i’m trying to run away from a big monster.

even better when a weapon runs on faith cause your weapon is only as strong as you believe it to be

yes, I’m having a chuckle to myself imagining someone who loves god SO MUCH that it makes his swords hit harder

honestly really like how the god of war trilogy does it which is to have the button prompt on the corresponding edge of the screen

but just showing the button layout is like the best way to do it

well, the best way would be to not have QTEs and contextual button presses in video games

I’ve been following this drama closely because I find Rohrer’s games interesting

Warning: Twitter drama

Rohrer did some pretty awful covid-19 truther takes and never backed down. This started as « why are they closing shops when this has only killed X people smh » and gradually transformed into « well if you think about it death is a part of life plus I really want to go out »

Then he became Twitter’s main character of the day when this culminated in a spectacularly bad thread in which he compared Covid to AIDS among other things. Terry Cavanagh, among others, burned bridges with him. He deleted all his old tweets afterwards

i feel like anyone who has ever been around Rohrer can’t be super surprised about this. he always had sort of an “enlightened dumbass” vibe to him, though i guess he wasn’t too explicit about his actual beliefs until the past few years.
