Games You Played Today: Actress Again: Current Code (Part 1)

finished life is strange. Game really stumbles to the finish line… especially the ending which suuuucks. game tries really hard to railroad you into eating your emotional vegetables, and if you refuse it gives you a “and then they lived blankily ever after” cop-out of an ending cutscene. I was frustrated immensely at how pat and contrived it felt

Hooked my laptop up, plugged in an xbox controller and my apple earbuds into the controller and tried a bunch of stuff I foolishly bought on Steam (i should…mess with that justice itch bundle???) I should have double checked before buying a pile of 4 dollar games but honestly I haven’t been to an arcade since march and most of these were shooters.

1917 The Alien Invasion: didn’t recognize the bone :sadpig: O out of 5 :lovepig:

The Hurricane of the Varstray -Collateral hazard- : is Crimson Clover not visually busy enough for you? Try Varstray. It was far too easy to hit continue so the time between life and death became meaningless as a dazzle of colors danced before my eyes. I guess I got to the second loop? I was pretty close to buying Trouble Witches which is the same development team (and the ones handling the upcoming Cotton port). They seem good at their jobs and also I felt old and out of touch because I could not figure out what the fuck was happening. 3 out of 5 :lovepig:

Steel Strider: oh hey Astroport. Boy I can’t remember what the name of the Astroport game I like is. Anyways side scrolling twin stick shooter with some dinky and ultra powerful weapons. Wasn’t feeling it. :lovepig: :lovepig:

Wolfflame: doesn’t this have a switch port? Also Astroport. A Raiden like that had some nice explosions but also reset on death and lose all your powerups. Great job idiot you died. Claw yourself up. :lovepig: :lovepig:

VIDEOBALL: It Sure Was Videoball. Wish I could play with friends :lovepig: :lovepig: :lovepig: :lovepig: :lovepig:

Sonic Lost World: What the hell is happening in this game? Sonic has a run trigger? That seems ill-advised. 3 out of 5 :lovepig:

God the Xbone Controller kind of makes me hurt. Or it’s shooters and I am getting old.

yesss it’s akin to crimson skies like that

This is interesting given my posts re: grip size in methods of input. What part of your hand hurts?

First to put asside joking it is definitely playing shooters with those xbone jewel buttons and just holding the buttons for a long time without change.

Second on my right hand around the indent between the index and thumb. On the left hand the outside ridge along the thumb.

interesting! I can see how flat buttons would be better.

When I have strain from holding a button I either remap it to another digit (so here I’d remap everything to the shoulder buttons) or make a macro.

Incidentally, you can probably pair another style of controller over bluetooth and use Steam’s built-in mapping layer.

The xbone’s “just works” overrides my preferred ps4. There is just compound weirdness with a ps4.

Both Xbone and PS4 controllers having an X button, but most games only having button icons for Xbone controllers, is an endless problem for my brain to get around. Like Steam supports the PS4 controller pretty easily for most things, but the games themselves do not and ahhhh.

Even though I have an xbox pad for PC pad stuff I still don’t know the xbox face buttons. I refuse to learn

i know all of them automatically and i’ve never have any problem with them until this year i started dabbling in using one console’s controllers on a different console-- i never would have thought that would bother me either but for some reason it’s completely debilitating once in a while

Yeah, I have the same problem. My 8bitdo’s X and Y locations are I guess swapped compared to an Xbox controller so every time a game says to hit “Y”, I sit there for a second going, “guh?” I’m also confused whenever they refer to the shoulder buttons. I liked the far more straightforward R1 and R2.

I restarted in Dark Souls as a Thief because I thought they looked cooler and I wasn’t really using the Pyromancer’s pyromancy (or rather, whenever i needed it i would waste several shots trying to get my aim right) or the extra healing of the Cleric. It seems like the only good weapon I can get right now is the Uchigatana from the undead merchant if I can find and kill him, but I don’t really want to kill him. I managed to stumble on the Zweihander (can’t use) and the Estoc, but I’m not really feeling the Estoc. I don’t really know anything about builds, but I assume I want dex, endurance, and vitality at least.

Maybe I’ll restart again and try another class and see if I like the feel better, or I might just go back to Pyromancer since I’m having difficulty pulling off backstabs and stuff since enemies are almost always able to turn to face me almost immediately.

unless you really care about minmaxing i don’t think you can fuck up a build so long as you focus on one attack stat + endurance and vitality, so you already have the right idea.

i think you can do just nicely with thief but if you still end up restarting, try bandit! they make great strength or dex characters, though i guess wether you like starting with an axe is a question of taste (personally i do).

Death Stranding is great and extremely interesting.

Starting class barely matters imo, it’s just a few points here or there. Now if you have a bunch of levels and start to regret your stat investments, that’s another thing, but if you’ve been leveling end + vit + str/dex you can almost certainly just keep playing this character and start investing in different stats if you decide you want to go a different direction with your build.

I guess to be more explicit, you honestly only need the minimum req stats to wield whatever weapon you want. If you just dump everything else into end and vit after that you’re fine until like SL 75-100.

I remember God of War 3 tried to solve this issue by having the prompt happen in the periphery of the screen. So Triangle/Y[xbox] would be in the top edge of the screen, Square/X[xbox] on the left etc. It kinda helped because you could just kinda feel out the qte and still keep focused on the action to some extent. I hate it when a QTE is so blinding that you can’t even see whatever cool thing is meant to be represented by that input in the first place.

Yeah, I know I’ve seen it in a bunch of games.

Color was supposed to do this but it’s been stripped off buttons in the past decade. Nintendo’s been abandoning not just color but even glyphs, so you see things like Switch button prompts solely defined by spatial mappings: in order to map to direction buttons on left joycon or face buttons on right, they often just display all four buttons with the needed button highlighted, with no glyphs.

Think this was largely a consequence of the left & right joycons having different glyphs, and also the glyphs being different depending on the orientation you’re holding the damn thing. Like, the system API could handle it since it does know what controller and orientation you’re using, but it would be a massive burden on the player to remember.

PS4 vs. Xbox doesn’t bother me (although X being in blue on both is a little iffy), but every face button transposed between Xbox & Nintendo is maddening, not to mention remembering what games & consoles use the right button to accept vs. the bottom button.

Yeah, it’s an ugly solution to a worse problem
