so happy that the trash fights in yakuza 7 are shorter than trash fights in every beat em up yakuza. its like shadow hearts QTE type style but fast paced. love it.

you can use a giant hitachi as a weapon. you talk about dragon quest non stop

the reason your hair is the way it is is because someone gives you a shitty haircut and you just roll with it

the english dub is beautiful. turn based fighting rules. the substory conclusion guitar is retired. which is sad, but its okay because our protagonist constantly just remarks on how fucked up everything is and reacts to shit with EMOTION in a way kiryu never would (i love kiryu), ichi is not a let down at all and i can super relate to a protagonist with a name people think sounds fake. game rules. haven’t got to the part where it opens up yet though, in true yakuza fashion i will spend 10 more hours fucking off probably

the dungeons are DUNGEONS for sure. THE FIRST ONE IS IN THE SEWERS :cryingpig:

you can save everywhere though… except in dungeons. you need a save point in the dungeons

Don’t want to spoil too much but I love how much the game thematically explores the outsiders of society (beyond just the yakuza) through this crazy Dragon Quest lens. Ichiban is such a refreshing contrast from Kiryu precisely because he’s more realistically flawed and lets us know precisely what he’s thinking. Even more endearing is his RPG delusion becomes his greatest strength since he just wants to do good and help those in need despite his apparent lack of tact or skills. I’m loving it so far.

With the Danganronpa chat going on, and the series being really cheap on steam right now, I decided to finally give the series a shot, starting with the original Danganronpa

I love anime bullshit and whodunnit logic puzzles so this series seemed like a safe bet.

It does feel like it’s almost cynically riding the aesthetic coat tails of persona. The menu and font choices look extremely close to P3 and P4, but hey, a successful aesthetic is gonna get copied so whatever.

Prologue and First Trial

Summary

Yeah this is literally Kaiji meets Battle Royale meets persona isn’t it? Colorful anime characters with big personalities all arguing in a high pressure situation like this is my jam, though. Knowing the general premise of the game before starting, but very few of the specific details I was immediately pulled into trying to figure out who was going to kill who.

All the usual anime archetypes were assembled, plus Sakura, a beefy martial arts lady who looks like she’s sixty who’s covered in scars.

She is immediately my favorite character.

Oh yeah plus the pop idol character is the childhood friend of the milquetoast protagonist character. Big shock. She’s going to be his assistant, they’re going to get out of this together.

I was actually pretty surprised when she was the first person to fucking die. I mean, so much of the rest of the game was playing to extremely archetypal anime crap, I was surprised that actual got me. Especially with how much of her story seemed left untold by the time I finished her not-quite-a-social-link.

When the fashionista character got killed immediately after for doubting the evil robot teddy bear, that really got me tense. The mixture of time pressure for hanging out with characters, the special abilities you get for learning more about them, and their backstories which give insight into their actions later, makes for a pretty cool narrative context for the actual murder mystery element.

The first trial is a piece of cake, I kinda pegged the baseball guy as the one to die first somehow? He just seemed like he had too distinct of a character design with too generic of a personality to last long for me. I also felt pretty clever for working out beforehand that he was the intended victim of childhood friend idol girl, and killed her in self defense. And I liked how the whole thing signaled me to expect a bunch of plot twists coming down the pike.

Anyway, the opening chapters got me really excited to see where all this stuff was going to go!

I had somehow not heard about the Persona style social link system before. Which really spiced things up.

Second trial

Summary

So uh, second trial was definitely something of a mixed bag for me. On the one hand, I did really like a lot of the deductive reasoning behind it! And how you could actually figure out some of it coming well before the actual trial, which feels like a strength to me in a mystery game.

But moreso, I really liked the like, four layers of fakeout for who the murderer was. It felt like some great classic I-tricked-you-into-thinking-I-was-the-badguy-to-lure-out-the-real-badguy shit, and I’m always here for that.

Less thrilling was one of the most bafflingly transphobic plot twists I’d ever seen in a game. I’d figured out Chihiro was ‘a guy’ as the game wants to me to read them as way early, so that much wasn’t what threw me. What did was the whole bit about how they were AMAB but wanted to a girl because ‘they were weak and wanted to get strong so they could be a real guy’ which uh…it’s like this weird mixture of masculinity is a prison plus gender essentialism plus never actually talking to a real life trans person or even cis crossdresser before. I was also kinda surprised because I hadn’t heard nearly as much about this game as Persona 4 and Catherine which, IMO, weren’t as bad as this to me?

Still though, all in all, despite the weird gender essentialism I still enjoyed the actual process of figuring this out.

Aftermath for Trial 2

Summary

So my assumption, and I kinda think I might have read something about this on wikipedia or something years ago so it might have been something I got spoiled, is that I’m in some kind of post apocalyptic world where the memories of the nightmarish societal collapse were erased from the students minds. I also wonder if all these folks were in the same school to begin with, Battle Royale style, and had their memories selectively erased. Like, were they even prodigies originally? Are they all actual prodigies now?

I also know another twist is coming. And I know one person is a traitor. and I know there’s another student who hasn’t appeared yet.

With the level of out there this game has, I actually half suspect the game to be trying to double fake me out that OBVIOUS DETECTIVE GIRL is an ASSASSIN GIRL and planted there by the folks running the game, but even if that’s the case there’s a part of me that almost believes the main character is in fact, unreliable, and is the one who’s been placed in the scenario by the powers that be, because isn’t that the classic video game plot twist?

The game also mentioned that there’s a machine generating all air in the school “You could even survive on mars”, said the evil robot bear. Maybe I’m just on fucking mars?

In any case, I dunno what’s going on exactly but despite the rough patches I’m in this for the long haul I think.

(finally, if you’re curious about playing these, I will just say: There’s some REALLY MASSIVELY WEIRD transphobia in this thing. I’m going ahead and playing it because TBH, I just sort of sigh and roll with this kinda crap at this point and I’m really compelled by the game otherwise but…please know that going in because I know a lotta folks are going to very reasonably see this is a dealbreaker, and for what it’s worth, but be aware It bugged me more than in Persona or the original release of Catherine. But I’m eternally the problematic horror fangirl so playing something this close to a Giallo simulator is too good for me to pass up.)

The PS4’s triggers have variable resistance and tension, but I don’t think they’re supposed to be able to physically move by themselves. But there’s some very weird going on in Asto’s Playroom when you’re using the spring suit. When you press the trigger you reach a tension point representing the spring starting to compress, but once you press hard enough to break through that point it feels as if the trigger pulls itself in, pressing all the way down. It’s such a weird feeling and I have no idea what’s going on. Even if I am actually pressing the trigger, it feels like it has less resistance than when the controller is turned off. Can the resistance get lower than even the default? Or is the trigger actually pressing itself down or something?

I have no idea, but this trigger stuff is cool. I’m thinking of buying Call of Duty just so I can try a gun game with adaptive trigger support.

I think the ambient spring tension is higher than what you can set it to.

Gun games are interesting; if you bottom out the trigger, since they can’t push up you basically disable the resistance effect until you let go far enough. Unlike a gun, there’s no force on fire to push the trigger back out. So you have to play along and release it yourself. It feels oddest if you’re doing a semi-auto rapid-fire.

Oh, that’s interesting. I was playing Godfall just now and it has some interesting sensations when doing heavy attacks and I’m not completely sure what it’s trying to get at yet. So you’ve got this three hit combo with heavy attacks on the R2 button and I think you might have to time them somewhat properly to get the chain going. So after you do the first attack, if you let go of the trigger and then press down again while it’s still in the first attack animation, you actually hit a resistance point early on and then it gives way towards the end of the first attack’s animation, letting you bottom out to do the second attack. Maybe it’s trying to help time your inputs? But I don’t notice this effect on the transition from attack 2 into attack 3.

Also if you hold the R2 button down all the way, it stops just short of bottoming out and has this weird rattle effect. Like you’re bouncing up and down between two of the segments of the gear inside the controller. It’s kind of like the rattling of a rapid firing plastic toy gun. It’s very weird to feel in a video game controller. It also makes the controller vibration/haptic feedback sweep left and right with your attack swing effects, which is kind of neat.

I also noticed that the trigger for web swinging in Marvel’s Spider Man Miles Morales has a resistance point maybe 2/3 down rather then just letting you press all the way. Pressing it further doesn’t seem to do anything. I wonder if developers are changing how much throw you feel on the trigger based on what they think is a good distance for their gamefeel.
