Games You Played Today: Actress Again: Current Code (Part 1)

don’t know if i could agree with this post more! i pretty much love hollow knight, but i was disappointed that it ended up being a little more toothless than it let on at first, and i think shovel knight’s level design sucks shit, and i guess i gotta finally figure out what environmental station alpha is if i ever stop playing final fantasy

also, i feel like i just said this a few posts ago, but… elliot quest

I loved what I played of ESA but I got stuck pretty soon after the first or second boss, couldn’t find a walkthru online, dropped it and never came back. I am such a failure of an adventure gamer

This is on my wishlist now because of your last post btw

I beat Saturn Bomberman. Very hard penultimate last boss even loaded up with powerups. Man, what a game! Impeccable spritework, great music.

Then I discover there’s a Master Mode where Bomberman puts on a karate gi and tries to climb a high score tower to master the Way of the Bomb? With more unique enemies and bosses? Unbelievable.

I was always wowed by Bomberman from the first time I played it on NES but I never really thought it could get as good as this one. Can’t recommend it enough if you’ve ever enjoyed these games to play it somehow.

I dug out my old first-gen Griffin Powermate

image

and hooked it up to my Windows machine. I used to have it running with MAME on my eMac to play Arkanoid, etc; right out of the gate it worked fine on the Windows desktop, but MAME wouldn’t detect its input. Typed some random keywords into google and found a post from just a couple months ago from someone with the same issue, with the solution (had to manually flag mouse inputs to use dinput instead of “auto” detecting) and also handy maths + spreadsheets detailing their/others research into matching up MAME’s spinner sensitivity settings vs the Powermate’s ticks per rotation or whatever vs various original games’ hardware so a feller can get that Reel Feel, ie the True Twist. Thank you, my internet friend.

Previously, I had removed the Powermate’s internal damping felt, and lubed up the remaining rubber/metal parts inside the spinner, for smoother sailing, which helped. It’s not the real thing, but it does the job.

I haven’t been using the CRTs that much, and when the one I have setup for vertical games isn’t used for a while it acts up more than normal. Employed some percussive maintenance there (slam top with palm, jiggle cables, wait). Booted up Ghox, which I don’t think the eMac could run at full speed?, and also in the meantime (2017) received working sound emulation.

Great game.

yeah i played through so many times in '11-15 or so that i ended up doing that before deciding ‘ok, i’m probably done with this now’

this might be part of why demon’s is my favourite (i’m sure someone has probably articulated this way better in the fatigued souls thread but i was way too fatigued with souls to participate lol) - i can never regain that experience of spending an afternoon cautiously inching through 1-1 in march 2009 with no understanding of how the levels and scaling worked, before bombing through the sequels already familiar with the flow

Demon’s overtrained me to never use shields and just stunlock everything with DEX weapons so I’m not sure the experience helped me that much in DkS1

rygar is just such a nice little game. so much sense of wonder/mystery. primitive yet expansive and every zone has such a distinct atmosphere and sense of place.

Quarantine has broken my brain and spent 20 minutes with friends just betting on funny horse names in a SFC horse game and I want to do it again tomorrow.

I’ve been putting a handful of minutes into this game and that game in a frenzy of whittling down my backlog because I guess I’ve decided that’s how I’m avoiding my real problems this past week. Somehow that most notable thing to report is when some rando game, Data Jammers: Fast Forward locked up my computer upon launch.

when i was a kid, we had super caesar’s palace for the SNES and my favorite thing to do was bet on the horses.

Small Radios, Big Televisions is not a bad way to spend two hours or so. Its perspective is one of the things that’s most interesting about it. You view rooms in diorama with no visible player avatar for the majority of the game, but it still limits what you can interact with as if you were more embodied: doors must unblocked, walkways must be raised, etc.

Do you like low-poly graphics, warbling electronic music, and 70s psychedelic Sci-Fi vibes? You might like this one.

I have absolutely no recollection of how I came to own it, but I’m glad it was there in my Steam library, waiting to pleasantly surprise me.

The Wonderful 101 Remastered (PS4): You’ll laugh, but Kamiya’s stuff always leaves me feeling like a dog who’s just had their nose vigorously rubbed in a patch of urine-soaked carpet.

Last Remnant is good SaGa.

It has a battle rank system that means that if you grind too much on loser enemies you will not progress enough to compensate for the enemy level scaling and will not be able to progress at all. This freaked out too much back when I first played it and I just avoided every enemy, resetting if I even fought one, constantly checking guides to not miss sidequests either, it was pretty awful.

This time I’m just going with the flow and having a lot more fun.

This game has a lot of obscure systems and the more you look them up, the worse the experience

Also I’m looking forward to when these weird huge empty PS2 non-places will be seen as cool. That time will come

Dark souls 2 Ivory King DLC will be seen as Peak Design

the last time i played last remnant i basically just did whatever i felt like until i came to a boss that seemed to be literally unwinnable about 10-15? hours in. i gathered from guides that it’s a common roadblock

i tried about 15-20 times

so i guess i need to start a new game again lol
