undertale is mechanically and aurally very cool imo, my biggest complaint (which I’ve shared before) is that the writing is a little too confident in trying to land its most facile emotional beats and even the phraseology of “pacifist run,” and the big reveals of most of the postgame content, inflates them beyond reason. its reputation doesn’t really do it any favours in this respect! but that makes the prospect of an eventual more mature work pretty exciting.
the #1 reason i love undertale and it sold its pacifist run to me right away is i like every one of the monster character designs and think they’re all plausibly likable enough that you wouldn’t want to hurt them if you were given the chance. Not just the boss monsters who are the main cast, all of the small encounters are very cute jokes where you get the best outcome by playing along
I do also like the boss monsters though, they are basically the cast of a good webcomic in videogame form. Undertale has big webcomic energy and that aligns strongly with my tastes
Yeah undertale is a play that encourages you to play the part but also lets you walk on stage and hit everyone with a bat. I think that’s what makes playing the part feel even nicer, the game reacts so well to cooperation, but you always have the option of ending combat early by doing a murder.
Every now and then I remember the PS4 has voice commands and I have a PS4 camera plugged in so I can use them whenever. They really help with finding games in your library since the UI is unequipped to deal with someone owning more than a few games. But apparently the voice command names of games can be different from their actual names, so the longer or more complicated game names can be difficult to pull up if you don’t know the right name in advance.
Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker is “Naruto Shinobi Striker”.
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven is “Eyes of Heaven”.
Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme Vs Maxi-Boost ON is “Maxi Boost On”
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is “The Lost Legacy”
Monster Energy AMA Supercross 3 FIM World Championship The Official Videogame is “Supercross The Game”
Getting eager to finish up with Siren. But because the game is so dang obscure, and non-linear as well, it’s really tough to have a sense of how much longer I have even if I consult the walkthroughs!!
Stuck on the final mission and I refuse to drop the difficulty of Star Wars Squadrons from the default “I know how to move the sticks and push buttons” difficulty to the “just lemme push buttons and show me the story” difficulty, even though that’s all I’m really here for.
A game fulla escort missions, gotta love it.
Tried to get back into Genshin Impact and ehhh, I just don’t think it’s for me. It looks really nice, but the story doesn’t do anything for me, and I’m not feeling the combat or controls or “loop” or anything. Ah well!
Coming up on my now semi-annual “ah fuck gotta rush through whatever DLC I have left before the next Assassin’s Creed comes out” that I put myself through. The shitty “ya gotta have a baby” DLC put me off on the far cooler Atlantis stuff in Odyssey, but honestly the fact that the Elysium stuff is just everything you spent 200+ hours doing in the main game, except sometimes there are very strong metal men who make awful noises…not great in and of itself!
Hopefully I’ll play something and actually have fun before too long.
Ah I am glad you followed up on that post because I wasn’t sure who made it but I knew they’d be happy about the Shadowlands delay lol. Grats!
i should actually beat Undertale one of these days. i always make it to what presumably seems like the end and then i just kind of stop.
it’s a charming game, but it’s one of those things where i feel like i can see the seams/its inspirations a little too easily, to the point where i’m like “oh man, i should replay _______”
the last time i played it, though, it clicked a lot more than it did the first time. i should…go beat it.
It’s always going to be a work made by someone younger than you and that won’t stop be true.
This has happened to me several times with Undertale. It just completely evaporates from my consciousness when I get to a stopping point. Then, inevitably I’ll be reminded a month or two later about its greatness and I pledge to play it again (from the start) at some point. I’m surprised this happens to me because Undertale is what I WANT to play, it feels deeply personal but never teeters over the edge into twee sentimentality while totally owning its influences without feeling like shameless pastiche. It’s excellent, I’m the problem.
Casually letting a giant corporation listen to and watch your every move.
Dynasty Warriors 2
I have a problem with patience.
We’re here, at the birth of a genre. Koei shed its menus and delivered something hot and immediate. Trip Hawkins would be proud. This game, however, is not for me.
It should be though. I have read Romance of the Three Kingdoms. While I can say it’s my least favorite of China’s classical novels, that’s more like saying lemon is my least favorite Starburst. I still like it! It’s kind of hilariously repetitive. I lost count of how many times a general ingeniously faked a retreat in order to bait their opponent into a more advantageous field of battle. The book just keeps going and going with dead heroes and villains being replaced by new ones. It’s entirely worth reading just to see Zhuge Liang do his thing. He’s a trickster strategist who can read the stars and intuit his enemies moves. He always wears daopao.
In my time with Dynasty Warriors 2, I did not get to watch Zhuge Liang do his thing. I completed two battles, both which cost me well over an hour to complete. That’s because I died again and again.
I have a problem with patience. I see the crowds of low ranking soldiers and think myself above them. I charge ahead, straight to one of the generals. This is what some of the characters in Romance of the Three Kingdoms do so I feel justified. I am swarmed and hit in the back dozens of times, stunned into death. I swear to myself I’ll be more careful next time. I am not.
I began to view the battlefield like a system of water pipes. My armies are like water and theirs are like wads of toilet paper. I understand that I have to clear the clog before the water can flow but it’s too tedious. I just hit the attack button again and again hoping I will feel something. Even the horse is annoying to use because it gets caught up on troops. The absolute worst thing is when you fight another general. You’d think this is where things become interesting but there is a detail here that ruins everything. Any time an enemy general falls on the ground, he or she has a chance of getting a stat buff or regaining health. It’s possible that they will regain full health. Once, I whittled Lu Bu down to a sliver of health only to watch Cao Ren come in and knock him down. He healed completely then unleashed a flurry of attacks that killed me. My last save was 20 minutes ago. There are probably some sweet Tips and Tricks that make everything easier but I didn’t find them. I am finished with Dynasty Warriors 2. I am not done with Musou.
the answer is literally to Never Knock Them Down in this one lmfao. also they do have a limited supply of healing items so they won’t heal like that forever, but yes the pro strat is to never complete your combo so they don’t actually fall down
it’s also worth noting that you are intended to grind your face off in this game and if you are running face first into generals outside of level 1 on normal without having upgraded your character at all then you’re asking for a beatdown.
dw3 fixes a LOT of annoying things about 2
I tried to stick with three hit combos instead of four hit combos but the difference in feeling in so slight. It felt like the game was counting my inputs mid animation, which would lead me to add a fourth hit by mistake.
it does count your inputs mid animation which is actually ideal, it allows you to buffer your combo so the timing is perfect. otherwise you’d be hitting the button too early and attacks wouldn’t come out. i actually think the combo/buttonfeel/mechanical nuance of these games is really really well done
also also also keep in mind 2 is jank as fuck so some of the characters don’t have good combos/hurtboxes and are slow and terrible and you should basically avoid them lol
DW games are so good though i will live to see you love them @MintyJuffowup
