It did get a 3DS virtual console release in America

It’s a way more frenzied combat experience than Zelda for sure, it brings an arcade feel to the Famicom. Definitely the most notable FDS exclusive

Ahh true, this is partially just a me problem. I guess I like to keep my grip symmetrical and I didn’t find any use/fun in the camera correcting button.
I do like pointless spaces though, like with no collectibles or spatial advantage, makes me feel a little nostalgic.

I played this a bit last night. I can get the modern feeling what with everything tracking your movement. I wonder how it would play if that slow homing bar was a little quicker, but I sort of like how it makes you play a little more patiently. I really love the second shield where every bit is moving, one of the first things I did in Mario maker was try to make something like that with breakable blocks on a looping conveyor belt

I’m not an expert with AM2R’s randomizer in particular, but budgeting power bombs is definitely a thing randomizers in other the games. Likewise, finding super missiles and power bombs early is fairly common since there are so many of them, though there are plenty of seeds that can withhold them for a while (depending on the logic/progression settings).

As far as the placement of major items, finding lategame equipment early on isn’t necessarily uncommon, but it depends on the settings of the randomizer. Some randomizers attach different weights to different locations (eg in SM randos it’s common to have a “suits restriction” that prevents them from spawning in early Crateria/Brinstar locations), though that’s not always the case.

Structurally speaking I don’t think M2 (in any of its incarnations) lends itself well to a randomizer, mostly because (as you ascertained) the areas are too disconnected and there’s too much mopping up to be done after reaching equipment “go mode” (unless there’s an option change the number of metroids to reach the endgame).

I should note that I’m much more a spectator of than a player of randomizers (especially races), and I must say that Super Metroid is my favorite one to watch (in part due to the extensive routing options, but probably also due to my over-familiarity with it). Unironically my favorite eSport.

Yeah! They only have short descriptions like « Guard » or « Pitiful father »

I forgot to mention that each NPC in Octopath Traveler also has pre-duel dialogue, failed charm dialogue, successful charm dialogue, guiding dialogue, post trade dialogue, and failed pickpocket / scrutinize dialogue

These might all not be unique per NPC but so far it looks like they are. Madness

For me an option to set the required number of metroid slayings to about half would probably have the ideal pacing. Unfortunately that’s not an option in the built-in randomizer. That doesn’t necessarily make it a bad speedrunning game but it does mean every run will have a “100%” flavor instead of an “any%” flavor. (And maybe I should actually try to complete the run and see how interminable the victory lap actually feels before I pass judgment. It might play out as a pretty brisk romp. And if I had been playing it “as a speedrun” from the beginning I would’ve killed more of them on the side already.)

The randomizer is quite polished in other respects and I am otherwise inclined to try another run. I gathered it has a principle that if you are able to sequence break somewhere, then you will always be able to backtrack to the savepoint from there. It’s already something of a principle in the AM2R level design, and then when you are lacking really basic powerups like bombs/highjump that it wasn’t reasonable to contort the level design around, the game also adds special carrion bugs which act as platforms for backtracking (and the logic seems very fine-grained to only provide them when absolutely needed)

anyone who has played yar’s revenge, have you played the game it was initially intended to be a port of before it was determined that the poor little VCS couldn’t cut the mustard for a proper translation?

speaking of games i’m curious about, has anyone here played Hardwar? i had no idea this game existed and it looks neat

I have! It’s a pretty standard elite-like, but it has a much cooler vibe. I’d definitely recommend.

Used all the knowledge I’ve been accruing in the submarine editor to wire this up: a coilgun that can take ammo from two different loaders (:O!!!) at the press of a switch. Pretty neat!

Also set up my sub to use batteries as a load-balancer for my engines, because otherwise it would literally brown out the entire sub every time I moved. Now, batteries start at 10% charge rate (to avoid overtaxing the reactor) and there’s a battery management setup to play with. I calculated the power draw, and the batteries can run the engine at full speed for 2 minutes without charging, 4 minutes at 100% charge rate, and at 50% capacity once the batteries are drained (as the most the batteries can pass through at full charge is 2000kW, compared to the engine’s 4000kW need).

Really liking that the submarine editor is just another game on top of the existing game. It’s so much fun to just try shit to see if it works. I feel like I’m becoming a submarine engineer for reals.

I played The Textorcist demo because I am a sucker for things that turn up on the Dreamcast and man, why did they have to go and spoil this interesting typing shmup by trying so hard to be edgy and putting in a goddamned attack helicopter joke

i think the outrun 2 home ports nad the first 2 sonic karts were made in sheffield too

This poll is from a thread where I play and write about PS2 games. I always play half of the games from the poll and select them based on what’s most popular. This time, we have a five-way tie for fourth, so I figured I would share the poll here in case any one would want to tip the scales.

Learned about this mod to make PC games run two instances for “split-screen” and I’m setting up RE5

Frankly a dream tool, I hated split-screen dying off after the 360

Picked up the PS5 from the store today and played a bit of Astro’s Playroom and a lot of It Takes Two with my girlfriend. The former was a cool experience already. I’m really digging the new DualSense stuff! The controller making noise is kinda annoying when someone else has it in their hands and when it’s me holding it it’s actually really cool. The different vibrations are awesome too, especially when you’re stepping in snow or ice skating. My girlfriend was blown away by the latter. Feels very good, I can also confirm. She loves picking up coins and destroying stuff, which is why we mostly play Lego games, so it was cool that there are coins in Astro’s too.

I’m really enjoying It Takes Two as well. My girlfriend is a bit bummed out by it sometimes because she’s not as adept at third person shooting as me (shooting is not a constant part but there’s sections that are like that) and I always have to tell her to relax, it’s fine. The game’s not a complete pushover in terms of difficulty and I respect that. It’s mostly made for two “gamers” to enjoy but a casual player can have fun too. The running gag between us was that we’re going to need couple therapy after we’re done. (the game is basically about couple therapy and sort of wants to be that for you)

I’m surprised that the controllers last at long as they do. I’m guessing we played 6-8 hours today and only at the end did we get a warning that the batteries are running low

Looks like a good enough system! I’ll do most of my gaming on the PC still but I’ll be there for the exclusives when they come around. That will be fun. Debating with myself if I should get FF7 Remake on the PS5, since it’s still not announced for the PC… Might be an option

I love new hardware and so it’s been a great day all around

The English dub for FF7 Remake sucks so I checked out what the German version is like, somewhat hopeful, but it sucks just as bad. I won’t be playing it in front of my girlfriend, that much is clear. This will be my own private shame if I do decide to get it

French dub is good

One of the funnest parts of the dualsense is how surprisingly well it works as a subwoofer in my hands. I can physically hear the raindrops and bass drops of special attacks in Returnal from sound of the rumble in the controller. It’s very weird, but very satisfying. The fidelity is just really good.

I remember RE5 had an weird kind of split screen presentation that I think was implemented to maintain proper aspect ratio for 16:9 images. Never seen another game do this. Curious if this is what the mod reproduces for the PC as well.
