Games You Played Today: 358 Threads Over 2

RE4 needs to end already. I’m in 4-1 or 4-2, I forgot. It still doesn’t feel like it’s building up to anything… I know I’m almost done though. Just gotta hang in there

yeah I don’t even know that I’d recommend playing past the first couple hours of 4 nowadays, it’s better than 5 and was very influential but that’s about all I’ll say for it

The levels do get significantly harder and I’ve been persevering, this game has done a real good job of slowly raising the heat on me like the frog in a pot that I am.

Doubly remarkable in my specific case because I usually need aesthetic or narrative carrots dangled in front of me to get me to stick with anything difficult these days, and those are basically an afterthought here.

I really liked Action Henk, one of the few games of its type I’ve played to completion (I liked Trials okay, but never beat any of them). I’m curious what your reaction to some of the final levels is going to be, because wow they get real frustrating near the end.

Oh I definitely needed to give myself a break, both because my hand was starting to hurt and because I was starting to see red. Many of these final few levels are probably going to be bronze medals only and then I’m walking away from them.

Action Henk (and surf maps, and Trackmania Nations) really make me feel like the ideal precision platformer is one where finishing it is easy and finishing it with a good score is nigh-impossible. The “high difficulty” levels in all three amount to forcing you to play it more hardcore than you might prefer, and it fucking sucks.

Seems hard to square that goal with the typical platformer format since it’s natural that falling off a platform has severe consequences. The race premise in action henk and trackmania gets it part of the way there, but with other platformer universes it gets even more tricky. I don’t know that anyone really loves the Zelda thing of inexplicably warping you back next to the pit you fell into with 1/2-heart less health.

Post this in the Reconsider Things thread.

I felt curious about Resident Evil after the praise for Village and downloaded VII.

I hate it! It’s full of arbitrary off-camera slight of hand and jump scares like a horror movie. The game part is mostly fucking around with locks and keys until you look away so the game can getcha. The character of the house is interesting but I’d much rather it was a slower and quieter immersive sim type exploration than the “cinematic” linearity.

The fake video filters early on look great, tho.

Well, I had to walk away a few levels from the end. I definitely crossed the threshold into controller-destruction territory and these Xbone pads are too damn expensive to give the old football-spike. Partway through a decent run in a difficult level I accidentally hit the reset button and I thought I was going to go super saiyan.

Up until that point though, really great. I love the game’s sense of momentum.

after the first 90 minutes or so you’ll get your wish, it comes on strong with that intro and I thought it succeeded on spectacle and forced perspective, but I was wearing a VR headset at the time and so the emotional response was definitely dialled up.

Just got the “ox statuette” which may be the end of the intro

I can’t stand how the game was trying to goose me so I’m not driving anymore but the vibes are good

Honestly would love if a mold was giving me regenerative abilities

yup, have fun!

Haven’t played RE7 and while it does apparently open up cf Felix I still don’t think it will be this one particular thing I want to see in the world, which is: Gone Home that is actually a horror game

Yeah, it ain’t. It’s also threatening to Get Stupid in the style - I read a book spine with a minor character from the 3DS game on it.

I want to be clear that that sounds awesome and I definitely think I will like the game RE7 is trying to be, it just suggests to me a game I would like even more which as far as I know does not exist and that makes me sad.

It’s weird that Gone Home and Firewatch are both fake outs, come to think of it

just wait until the succession of spooky basements

one of my favourite things that the scariest section of 8 does is when you think you’re unlocking the door out of a scary basement, it reveals a staircase down to an even scarier basement

such a great attitude

Re1 remaster on switch, never really played. Watched my dad play a little on ps1 and gc, n I’ve played re4 and Alone in the Dark. Regret not playing this on pc because no door skip, wow, the doors opening used to spook me so much. Forgot about the crimson heads lol, still truckin.
