Games You Played Today: 358 Threads Over 2

Oh I had Dragon Warrior but it was inscrutable to me. Took real pro @Flylighter to actually sit down and beat it

My most played NES games were like SMB3 and Base Wars

my first was III for DS

Coming from Pokémon, FFX, and Earthbound, the idea of a “world map” felt like gummi ship filler.

Playing 4 through 9 over 2003-2005, 7 was a precipitous drop in art quality, just hideous, and 8 got back on track. I can appreciate a bit of the influences now but it’s still ugly in a way that FFX isn’t.

Final Fantasy エックス, by the way.

This is brilliant, beautiful ecstacy come-down music

What’s SE’s Screamadelica?

i put sonic &sega allstars transformed on my vita, and it’s fine. the stages are especially beautiful. the problem is that it being a big crossover game means there’s no coherent world to it. it’s just a bunch of random stuff with different aesthetics smashed together. i can’t really get into it because it doesn’t feel like these characters exist together in a world.

i have sonic forces speed battle on my phone, which is an on-foot racing game starring many sonic characters, that kind of plays like dekotora densetsu where you just change lanes, rather than actual steering. but the main thind is that they’re all sonic characters, and all the stages are sonic stages, so the world of the game feels more coherent and more verisimilitudinal.

until now, seeing these two games that are so close to each other, but still so far apart, i never realised how important this kind of thing was to me in racing games. it’s probably important to me in other games, too, but you don’t see this kind of franchise-smashing often enough for it to be noticable as a trend. i already knew i disliked smash bros, but that’s because i just don’t find it fun to play, tbh.

also, there are plenty of crossover games and guest characters in games that i love, and which don’t have this problem. i think you’ve either got to put things together that have a similar aesthetic, or change the aesthetic of the guests to fit the game’s world. like the shiren characters appearing in one way heroics. they changed them just a little and they fit in perfectly

at least in drakengard you’re playing actual different routes on replays in nier you have to play through the same thing with an enemy commentary track on just to get the game to not hit the stop button so early this time during the ending

The other day I was trying to decide what would be the best/most practical way to play Shenmue, naturally I chose the dumbest way:

“US Shenmue” is an NTSC-J version of shenmue, with English dub and text, but the option to switch to Japanese text at any time with the press of a button. The case is pretty much a replica of the American version, with almost no alterations to make it look like a J-Dreamcast game. It came in a beautiful pink outer box which is missing, I guess that’s why it was relatively cheap.

It comes with 2 manuals, English and Japanese, and I thought it would just be the American manual as-is, but they went through the trouble of updating it for “US Shenmue”, explaining how the language options work and stuff.

It also contains some great advice that I’m sure wasn’t in the American manual.

Sometimes I wonder if it makes more sense on a Dreamcast controller but the Xbox pad is a clear derivative design

The controls are technically “responsive” like a car with bald tires that spins out at a blip of the throttle

For comparison I briefly played Sonic Heroes and god that game is miserable.

Totally uncapped acceleration! Why!

I attempted ending E of nier automata with no network support. I imagine this is normally supposed to be an inspiring thing where you and strangers band together to challenge fate etc. that wasn’t quite how it went for me. I don’t know how I made it as far as I did, before being repeatedly killed by Square Enix’s Marketing Divison. I entered a trance like state, I wasn’t really looking at my character or the enemies or projectiles, it was like I was looking at the inbetween spaces and going off of what I saw in my peripheral. nothing but sheer lizard brain kill or be killed instinct + fine motor control stick operation. pure human violence. there is a straight line between the feeling shoot-them-ups generate and the development of the atomic bomb.

I want to get back to DQ Builders 2! I never finished it even though I had such a stellar time with it. I’m beating myself up over it, truth be told
