Rabbi-Ribbi officially stinks IMO. It’s a terrible keyring game (the map is split up by area and it doesn’t tell you what areas link to what, so you just kinda have to guess), it’s a terrible platformer (jumping feels awful, can’t attack mid-jump) it’s a boring bullet hell game (the patterns are either predictable or totally unpredictable i.e. randomized, so it’s frustrating to play, but I have enough health to just facetank most stuff anyway), it’s too horny (see any art from the game at all) yet somehow not horny enough to be interesting, the writing is garbage, and all the characters look exactly the same.

Honestly a horny-bullet hell-metrovania was either going to be poison to me or exactly my kind of bullshit, so I guess I knew what I was getting into.

need a good trashy game to match my current trashy attitude

If you’re craving something else like that, then you’re not alone. More-than-slightly horny Metroidvanias have turned into a whole subgenre lately, I can vouch for Momodora: RutM, Bloodstained: RotN and arguably Record of Lodoss War: DiwL if you have a thing for elf girls.

(It’s also mandatory in this subgenre to have a colon followed by four words in the title. That way it is a nostalgic sort of horniness.)

i have been meaning to play momodora and record of lodoss war, maybe this is the kick in the pants i needed. i’ll wishlist em and see what the sale is like

I beat Bloodstained right when it came out, that game rules. I should play it again now that it’s been patched to hell and back lol

Bravely default 2 is extremely generic. But I like a good job system / a good battle system / an RPG that makes poison extremely powerful, so I’m satisfied

I like how in this universe you can only have a job if you possess its asterisk / mcguffin. You lose the right to the job and all related perks if you lose the asterisk.

For example once once your team beats Orpheus the Bard boss and steal the asterisk, he loses his fancy green clothes / feather hat and instead gets, like, a beige shirt / brown trousers / no hat. He then runs away in humiliation.

Then of course you don’t even equip the bard job. You just turn all your enemies normcore, as punishment, and keep their outfits in your closet. Then by the end of the game, once all the asterisks are stolen from all the asterisk holders, I’m sure the basic freelancer non-job will become OP (they always do) and everybody in the Bravely Default 2 universe will be wearing white shirts and jeans

if you played bloodstained when it came out, there have since been a bunch of free expansions added (randomiser, classic mode (which is essentially a new pre-sotn castlevania made with bloodstained assets), and zangetsu mode. i think that’s all of them?)

plus there’s the two circle of the moon games, which are probably the best faux-nes games made by a mainstream developer

I played the first one and got unreasonably mad at it 1/3 of the way through

don’t forget bloodless!

was honestly tempted by both of these but yeah the Actual Pornography aspect makes it a little less interesting to me. Primarily because I would like to stream them and I don’t want to accidentally show pornography to @Closed jr.

in that case, dont. you can play without the porn stuff in some of them but whats the point

Thought I’d give the Jedi Knight games another try because I have been thinking about that Shanahan new games journalism piece, but the combat just makes no sense to me and doesn’t feel good. I spent like 9 hours in the past playing Jedi Outcast and I don’t even remember if I got to the lightsaber parts. I respect a slow build up, esp in a hero quest context where Katarn is definitely coming into being as something he didn’t know he was, but I DON’T respect hours of terrible first person shooter shooting. You can’t hit anything with any of these guns, and, idk, I fully accept that maybe I just didn’t connect things in my head, but light saber duels felt way too rules based and unvisceral.

Maybe the best way to experience Jedi Knight is to watch people who seem to enjoy the game get into flashy light saber bouts?

The best rendered saber fighting is in Jedi Academy and the best level design is in Jedi Knight. Outcast compares unfavorably to both.

Oh, so like Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II? I played Dark Forces a bunch of years ago but could never get the sequel running on Windows 7 so I never got to play it. I did always suspect that it was probably, at least, a better game to shoot guns in.

Suddenly remembering being a young teen in the height of my Star Wars fandom. Some novel name-dropped Kyle Katarn and I just about lost my mind

That Ashtray Maze segment was NOT what I was expecting, lol.

god isn’t it a thrill though. realizing i can be very forgiving of a game if it integrates gameplay and music well

for that reason i’ve been playing a lot of Sayonara Wild Hearts this last month or two
