Jessie was the best character in OG FFVII by virtue of being the cool girl who makes fake IDs and bombs and shit, and she’s the best character in new FFVII by virtue of having my favorite fruit as her surname. I’d much rather have Jessie in my party over Aerith or Tifa. Especially over Tifa.

I liked Aeris way more than Tifa when I played FFVII. Aeris came off as more aggressive and the childhood friend trope never does anything for me (I even hate them in Suikoden).
But, none of that matters because Jessie is the Deborah of this game.
Like, she even wears a chest plate! If Aeris had done that, she’d still be palling around with her bros today!
For want of chest armor a heroine was lost.

I mean in all seriousness, when Cloud and Jessie parachuted off, I expected Cloud’s parachute to break and for him to fall into Aerith’s church
But I get it, memorable bosses like fan favorite Crab Warden deserved their time to shine

Can I get by with just reading a plot synopsis of the first game, then? I was truly not expecting to find it so unpleasant. TIE Fighter only came out a few years later and it seems so far ahead!
I’ll listen to the wind to hear when you hit the worst twist I have ever seen.
There really isn’t anything relevant in WC1’s plot that doesn’t get almost immediately explained for newcomers in 2.

I love it, but yeah, there is way too much there. like they just throw off “oh, here is another five hour long optional thing” on a regular basis and i have to debate if I want to do them.

i haven’t played ffvii remake, but the two things that have been made very clear about it by people who have played it since its release are
1 - jesse is cool
2 - the hints that aeris is a selfish jerk in the original must have been deemed “too subtle” after decades of fans treating her as the perfect pure priestess
been playing more katana kami, and it’s still good, but i just lost 20 floors worth of items since it gave me a boss fight immediately followed without warning by another boss fight. augh

Yeah, come to think of it, remake Aerith has a pretty similar dynamic as Jesse saying “Psych!”. It just hits differently because Cloud starts off instantly charmed by the context he meets Aerith in (nursed to health in a flowery church, then he gets to heroically defend her) and she has the power to take the relationship any direction she wants from there
