Oh I didn’t realize it was the Odallus folks.
I played it on Game Pass then got it free on Prime. I found it pretty good as Contra-Likes go.

i don’t hate shovel knight, but saying it’s better than cotm2 seems like crazy talk
I was very unimpressed. Like it was Fine but not really noteworthy
Adios is kind of interesting if you’ve ever looked at “Doc Burford”'s twitter or medium writing and thought “this guy has, perhaps, an overconfident view of himself & his ability to think about games” & then wanted to see that played out in the form of a game.
Otherwise it’s pretty clueless, endless heavy-handed exposition filled monologues punctuated by “mini games” that are pretty much all just occasionally clicking when told. The visuals & sound design are totally inconsistent, some models (a car for example) seem fairly detailed in texture, others (a horse you interact with twice) seem incredibly soft & intentionally blurred. Most off-putting, for a game designed around conversation with another person, ur conversational’s partner model looks poor, has weird lip-flap, and cycles between standing stock still & straightening his tie endlessly. Yet the game often encourages (& gives you no other options than) staring directly at him.
Weird weird & it’s so clearly, painfully, “written” & you are given nothing to do but stand and listen to this writing that it immediately forces a certain sort of detachment from any sort of experience besides a critical one. In that way, if u find enjoyment out of that, it is kind of fun to see something that seems 2 represent a certain sort of personal expression or at least u can project that on it. . Also it’s very short, which is nice, but it still feels a bit stretched…somehow…
Personally I would not pay more than like $1 for it & or maybe just watch a bit of a playthru, but…maybe if u have a “chill” relationship with money u will feel otherwise.
Glad to have confirmed for me that Adios is exactly the kind of hubristic arrogance I expected Doc to proudly make. Few creative people I’ve met online bother me as much as him.
agree huntdown is much better than blazing chrome, huntdown and cotm(1 and 2) are probably my favourite recent retro revivals
It’s somewhat impressive to me just how much success he’s been able to carve out for himself despite not having any sort of programming/art skills at all/seemingly no interest in pursuing any. He’s managed to claim most of the success of Paratopic despite Jessica Harvey doing all the visuals/programming/etc. & Lazzie Brown having done all the music/sound design.
And I mean collaborative effort sure sure, but now he’s running a game company as someone with only a single writing credit( & who has written about hating text as a medium)? Credit where it’s due - seems like a dreamy existence.
all the weird drama around the people who made Paratopic just profoundly bums me out. i don’t know a lot beyond snippets but multiple parties involved have said and done things since that just made me very annoyed and disappointed and made me trust less people in general. i don’t wanna go into it more than that but… it’s like whenever i feel like i see something kinda weird and cool get actually some minor success it immediately seems to go to people’s heads and they leverage that in all kinds of shitty/stupid ways. sucks.
I feel exactly the same. I don’t know anything about the distribution of labor on Paratopic, but I have assigned no credit to that guy in my head canon.
less than half through and my head has already exploded 7 whole times
one of the few roguelikes i genuinely enjoy bc it layers a dozen different mechanics and then gives you classes which circumvent those rules in various ways. real treat of a game. i think the store page describes it as an “immersive sim” and i generally agree
yeah, I think it’s underrated because it looks like a cross between rpg maker and a free mmo from the 2000s – really a big, fun game.
a little looser than games i normally play (although i’m bending on this more as a i get older). i liked it a lot too – it’s fun w/ friends as well! definitely feels more like a sim but it’s very playful at the same time.
I raised a bunch of zombies using the necronomicon and they went on a rampage and killed all the fire fighters ten outta ten
Honestly your review on steam convinced me to buy this. If I’m half interested in a game and I see you liked it, I’m likely to buy it, mostly based on heat signature (and now this)
Really glad the rest of sb has caught up with my hot take that paratopic was garbage and doc burford is the dumbest guy-trying-to-sound-smart
I liked paratopic but in a “Marge holding a potato” kinda way. That guy sounds like a dipshit tho
Marge holding a potato but it’s a text box saying “games that have hard cuts between scenes”
30 flights of loving was good, too bad paratopic never managed even a fraction of the charm of that.
If you know any other games that do this, please let me know so I can continue to move Paratopic down the list
