In addition to what you are saying about the SA vibes, I always thought the accidental death animations were rendered with a disturbing almost erotic intimacy. And there are so many of them. The game was made by some creepy people for sure.
right like it’s all eroticized violence and it’s ok because a woman god is unleashing the natural disaster circumstances that result in the grisliest sexy death scenes, it’s so absurd
i miss Lara just dying fucked up normal style in the PS1 game and i never thought i would say that lmao
The recent Tomb Raider reveals made me think I should actually try out the reboots and older stuff but maybe I should resist that urge. Are there generally-agreed-upon, go-to entries for this series?
The characters in 2013 are all just so bad and annoying, too. They all suck. You’re supposed to feel bad as they drop one by one but, nah.
I enjoyed Rise of the Tomb Raider a lot more, maybe because it pared the crew down to Lara and Jonah, and he’s MIA for a good part of it. They also greatly reduce the gore porn aspect. Also it’s sorta OK, y’know, to play.
Then Shadow of the Tomb Raider just sort of shits the bed across the board and is a pretty awful game.
tbh I don’t think these reboots are worth your time unless you want to wade through triple-a ideology.
i’ve been playing the very first tomb raider again and the 2013 game seems even funnier and more inexplicable when you remember lara croft’s introduction in TR1 is via a magazine cover about her killing Bigfoot
if the atmosphere isn’t oppressive and threatening on physical and psychosexual levels, how will you feel moé for Lara and want to protect her
She was too badass so they had to take her down a peg. No wonder old tomb raider guys were pissed off about it. You don’t get to do a single backflip in this game, nor do you get to fight any mythological creatures with a MAC-10
I thought the Tombs in Shadow of Tom Braider were good and there is an early scene I have a lot of affection for but also Lara causes the Mayan Apocalypse and then has to be the prophecized white savior of an isolated tribe city. Great Tombs! And some of the platforming took my breath.
I dropped Rise when after a level where I murdered hundreds of guys Lara would not kill a home invader so there could be a plot and I declared “Come On.”
still true
TR1 is good, and TR4 (The last Revelation) is also a good game from the CORE design style, but TR4 is 80 hours long. Tomb Raider Anniversary is a more focused take on the stages of TR1, and while I didn’t like TR Legend at the time for being so streamlined nowadays I find it mostly inoffensive. Of the modern games Rise of the Tomb Raider is least objectionable, and the most like an Uncharted game, if you’re a fan of Uncharted 2.
Angel of Darkness and Underworld are both interesting failures, with AoD being more interesting and more of a failure. It looks like there’s a VtM: Bloodlines style restoration patch for AoD, but I haven’t tried it.
I do kinda wonder if they patched up AOD to be a little better with that second remaster collection.
The bummer about Underworld is that, for whatever reason, Microsoft ponied up to have the true ending released as DLC for the 360 version, and it never came out anywhere else.
I guess that hubris kinda bit them again later when they paid up for Rise of the Tomb Raider exclusivity (even paying for a 360 port!) for a year to go up against Uncharted 4, which got delayed about a year shortly after they announced that.
The only actually good Tomb Raider game is the first one.
2 is a Lost Levels type situation. It’s worth playing but it’s also kind of insane and you should probably cheat for like infinite ammo and health packs, it is not worth engaging with the combat honestly.
Anniversary is worse 1 but “smoother”, if you are a wimp.
Underworld is the next best one after those and it’s not great.
All the New Raiders are miserable garbage.
Except Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Lara Croft GO, those are both really good!
Amen!
For joke purposes, i wanted to add a Raider ad from ytube and do a ‘old boomer joke’, but for whatever reason, first result on them ytubes is a german one, second result ………
an unholy crossover of Felix’es FFX remake plottwisting in that italian Twix (sorry, RAIDER) ad, what the HELL IS GOING ON ok back to bed it will be all good after a few more hours sleep———
please make sure to also consider a secret dialog choice tree option, to make Khimari have a special punchline when he’s part of the same team with Wakka, where at the beginning of a random encounter he’s mumbling
it’s time to blitz

Grandia Disk 2 has multiple “why the hell not” side dungeons in one area. One is nearly featureless maze and the other is a richly detailed funhouse of death.
After the maze im ready for some plot progress so I might just stick a pin in the other for now.
Wakka should find and adopt a stray dog about halfway through the game. The dog should act exactly like Wakka in every way while being visibly about 10% smarter. The game should constantly do an air bud riff wherein the dog is really good at Blitzball without ever acknowledging air bud. He should name the dog Flocka and they should have an ultimate tech they do together called Wakka Flocka Flame
Unlock the Flocka Flame ability when you equip Wakka with the Phoenix Ball. Damage booster when paired with Kimahri’s Gucci Mane accessory
