Bless whoever made a font for the Super Hang On logo
Still gnawing away at Super Mario Galaxy. I think the spring suit is the worst goddamn thing in the world. Controls like shit, Iām terrible at getting the jump timing down on it. The flying suit aināt much better. This game is not convincing me, in many ways, that it controls well.
Levels are pretty good though, Iāll give it that.
Wild to read thisāthe spring suit was my absolute favorite (in a game that was otherwise leaving me disappointed). Mario is truly a galaxy of contrasts.
to impress a youtube audience of 5 people?
Knowing the Dark Souls online community, Iām sure someone would take this as a challenge
Scrolling through the endless Steam Nextfest demos I found a really charming platformer called Unsent - about delivering mystical unsent mail and navigating a labyrinthine post office. Itās very Psychonauts esque in the level design and writing. Levels have lots of cute details like posters, dialog, and little bits of environmental storytelling.
I should have taken more screenshots. i am really underselling the character design and world design. I might actually play the full release since it seems pretty charming.
THRASHER demo whips ass. i love smashing lines and circles with a big fucked up worm. iām glad Brian Gibson is getting into this Jeff Minter Makes Games About Killing God vibe its really good for him
Way to sell me on a game, damn.
I did what I told myself a year or so ago and finally sat down and played Hollow Knight on my steam deck for the last week or 2. I read up and learned that I must have it a bug in the switch version that messes with some triggers with the Map Bug that caused me to just loop between 2 big zones.
Didnāt hit that speed bump and mangaged to make proper progress. Got the first basic ending of beating the last boss without the special charm and I am now in the secret white castle full of buzzsaws.
Perfectly fine video game. Fun to press buttons, mood and tone are solid through out though I feel like it gets a little thin in the back half where I just feel like Iām going down a grocery list of stuff to find just to feel like Iām making progress. Looking forward to playing silk song in a week or two over breaks which looks more fighting game white knuckle action geared up from megaman style platforming action.
A local senior center announced a beginner Mahjong class open to the public so I went over to try it out!
I felt a little bit out of place but basically everybody was very welcoming. It turned out the main problem was that the class taught American Mahjong, and I started to feel this ruleset is kind of awful. Its so-called āCharlestonā phase reminded me of the interminable trading in Catan, and its all-or-nothing scoring inspired apathy when I wasnāt anywhere near any mahjong.
Now that I read up on different rulesets, riichi mahjong sounds more like the kind of tabletop games I actually enjoy, but I wonder if thereās anyone around here who plays it.
remembering now that there was a group placing playing riichi mahjong at the local games place when I went last weekend. unusual for the location but not out of place
im so excited for this one if someone brings the abiltiy to play it at the meetup ill play more than the beach boys game
Played the Digimon Storytime Stranger demo and chose the Air Hostess class.
Feels a little bit like a lower budget PS4 game at times. Weaknesses are simplified into whether the health bar shows a bonus or not and the user interface feels very modern but the dungeon design and overall monster catching system feel more legacy.
My lazy take is it feels like an unsatisfying middle ground between SMT* and Pokemon without feeling super strong at either the dungeon design or creature appeal. Generating Digimon and digivolving is made pretty transparent compared to SMT but whatās the point when I donāt really like most of the designs. I think Tentomon and Demidevimon are the only ones I really liked. Also because itās a 3-mon party, you really need to build the party according to weaknesses and types a lot more than you would in something like Pokemon which rewards mon loyalty.
This is also petty, but I donāt like the fact that Digimon have full-blown human voice acting. The sound design doesnāt really end up having a signature compared to cries of PokĆ©mon or the ethereal shouts of SMT Demons which oddly contributes to my sense it feels cheap even though this looks a lot better art-wise than the upcoming Legends Z-A.
This game also really wants you to explore ruined Tokyo buildings, parking lots, and sewers a whole lot. There are so many underground tunnels in a way that reminds you that unique animations, voices, and movesets for all Digimon is the asset priority. The plot frames you as special agents who investigate all paranormal phenomenon which coincidentally are just Digimon in the real world. UFOs? Digimon. Loch Ness Monster? Digimon. Thereās a Digimon war and we get sent back in time and we gloss over a lot of the troubling questions that scientific research on Digimon fails to account for.
I think itās just too slow and I donāt like the Digimon enough to stick with it. Combat and environments are, probably overall, better designed than recent Pokemon games but monster collectors really die hard if you donāt like the lil guys.
*This game even has the Devil Survivor character designer for the human designs. That is, the humans that arenāt also Digimon.
The thing Iām most aware of this game are peoples immense disappointment that they cant get any of the lady digimons to carry them like princesses compared to other digimon that give piggy back rides.
Experimenting with PCSX ReArmed optimization on 3DS. Allegedly Gran Turismo 2 will now work. Got stuck in an all black room in Tail Concerto though which isnāt fixed and prevents finishing the game ![]()
Edit: Gran Turismo 2 is now playable. Armored Core 1 is also running without any graphical artifacts or slow down, which would have been nice to know before I 100%ād it. Guessing things in general are going to be like this, but still upset by not having a way forward in Tail Concerto. Iāve assembled a list of other games that are known to run on here though, as well as what games are on here that wonāt run. So at some point Iām going to remove four games and add up to 14 new games, up to three of which might be multi disc.
Iām playing il2 1946 again to practice deflection shooting based on a book I read and I gotta say we need to start using pancake as a euphemism for landing a plane again. military styled after action report and these mfs are like āand then the squadron pancaked at 1647 hoursā its too cutesy to let the ww2 us army have dibs
Played JSR on steam for the first time, and spend literally 4 minutes missing the jump on the highway onto the crane to jump a gap. Exactly the same way I spent 4 minutes missing that jump 25 years ago.
Starting to feel like JSR is a game that could only exist when you brought a CD home from the store. No one would put up with the gameās momentum and jump physics if they could download and then refund the game instantly. You have to be forced to do a value judgement on the time itāll take to bring the game back to the game store to put up with it being that abrasive long enough for its other qualities to appeal to you.
played through DQ4 for the first time in ages on the iOS version while trying to get to sleep in the wrong time zones the past couple weeksā they really did a decent job on these, theyāre not compromised at all other than letting you abuse auto saves by force quitting the app (I remember when I played FF3 on Android in 2012 it was like this then too). itās basically the DS version except higher resolution which means theyāre well adapted to portrait mode. anyway, a tidy 19h to clear it without the postgame stuff from the remakes, pretty good, no complaints.
Playing crazy taxi classic on android on the way to the meetup. Its extremely passable for a mobile port. I have to be careful Iāve nearly missed multiple flights getting to deep into it.
Looks like dreamcast. Full frame rate on my very old phone. Tap controls are serviceable if imperfect.
Sadly it is no longer on the app store. Might be worth looking into if it can be side loaded. Why this was taken down ill never understand.
