set this up and its a little finicky but sooo much better than the zen pinball stuff at first brush anyways… damn we should have a pinball thread lol maybe i’ll make one someday when i feel like i have some good stuff to post in there idk
i remembered that someone has mentioned Helldivers2 recently itt, and since i had two Sessions in a row where i noticed a few things, thought i may wanna share some thoughts in case that someone else has been noticing a few things amiss in this game:
disclaimer upfront:
have only played 37h of this, so it’s not like i have been 100%ing it and been waiting for new material/missions/weapons or whatever.
so, what’s up:
idk what they did with the balancing, but i noticed a few patterns that made the gameplay feel challenging, and not in the good way — what’s challenged foremost is the patience of the Player here:
-
Coordinates seem to be beset by an offset, which is obnoxious when requesting new weapons, though can kill you (and your squad) in case you are not accounting for a calculation error that you cannot quantify properly — textbook example fo how to kill the fun of using a core gameplay element.
-
add bullet-sponge enemies, horde-mode attacks out of the blue, plus suddenly spawning enemy-combos that can wipe you out before you have a chance to request equipment that can bail you out (if it wasn’t for the issue mentioned above… how about that precious turret or ammo is spawned right behind a wall where you cannot reach it, or inside a flame Tornado? — death or destruction guaranteed)
-
Equipment was supposedly nerfed significantly, though if you never had it, you don’t know what you are missing, right…
-
… aside from realizing that you pump a lot of ammo into the tiniest enemy units, and are left with running away from the bigger fray … that plops up often enough that you start to notice the difference to how you played it months ago. So now the gameplay loop is ‘scan the map for the main mission objective, run there as fast as possible (to avoid the issues described above), hope the offset-issue doesn’t impact the single airsupport you can call in 1-5 minutes, to bomb it into oblivion and then repeat. and repeat. and repeat.’
-
… ah yeah, did i mention that we’re talking about difficulty setting 4-out-of-10, where you are getting the second out of three McGuffin-probes in case you are lucky, and you are crawling from level 18 to 19 (out of the highest i’ve ever seen: 150) over hours.
they had Starship Troopers:the gameplay and turned it into Running Away:Be Lucky

Dark Souls (360): yeah, this again. figured i’d try a Warrior build this time- see how that works out
Edit: it didn’t. gave up before i even made it out of the Undead Asylum
Things hater Doesn’t Understand about Dark Souls #1: these classes. what is the point of a Thief who can neither steal nor sneak? or a Hunter in a game with no game?
They are who you were, not who you will be.
Everyone in Dark Souls sneaks and steals
just excitedly threw my good shield at a sleeping mixer rip #shiren4
thief can open doors in the first third that no one else can until they find the master key (or take it as their gift), imo it’s one of the more distinct starts!
I did this and it got me into a lot of trouble more than once, hahahaha.
The true Dark Souls starts with the Deprived class (with the master key selected as your gift).
I played this game recently. It was good.
This is how I always start…
I always do deprived because it’s more fun to have to scrounge around for equipment at the start. I never pick the master key though because I prefer to force myself to have to do the Depths and Blighttown
i just go through those levels anyway cuz they’re good levels heheh
i picked master key on my very first character and it was such a memorable part of that first playthrough. anytime the game told me “Unlocked door with Master Key” i knew i was walking into a place i wasn’t supposed to be yet, which is always really thrilling. i love when games let you wander out of your depth.
I still do Depths/Blighttown, I just really like opening shortcuts early.
this discussion made me wonder how hard it would be to start with firebombs and do a demon’s great hammer only run, which led me to this youtube video with 5 views
it gets all fucked up when you try to embed it (ERROR CODE 15)
it’s full of speedrunner shit
- going to great hollow first thing to collect soul items titanite and then homeward bone out
- killing havel with fall damage by having him fall off the stairs at the top of his chamber over and over
- killing the black knight in darkroot by getting on a weird piece of terrain off to the side and parrying until he falls off the cliff
- aggroing andre with a black firebomb, kiting him to the titanite demon, which kills him so you get the crest of artorias
- killing all of the forest covenant npcs by chain-kicking them over to and then off of cliffs
- finally attaining 31 strength and being able to use the one weapon in the run at 27:35
- at this point it’s qed, not sure if i should keep watching
addaball has replaced its Rivals Of Aether cab with Segas Hang On. Never has a lifetime of sketchy bike riding prepared me so much for the motions of this game.
One of the best
this cab was in my friend’s garage’s lobby forever and I almost asked to buy it to make a romhack called “Super Hung Over” where the bikes are replaced with mopeds
but yeah, modulating the throttle to get around turns, one or two fingers on the brake, only a matter of time before I get to the end. Someone mentioned the arcade cab can save scores overnight but they couldn’t figure it out, I might do some research…

start with firebombs and do a demon’s great hammer only run
why would anyone not spending a life sentence in an oubliette with only a console and the game for entertainment do this to themselves?
