Games You Played Today: 13 Going On 30

Tristan rules! I used to play it on a Mac IIci.

he is bad at games, great at predicting EU long war enemy activations but that doesn’t transfer.

valid comment on one of his Broken Arrow streams after he spent ages in the editor teching out how best to destroy helis with concealed recon in woods for an artillery support deck, and failed to bring in any arty for the match after dropping recon in the most pointless places

New FFT remaster: Despite everything it’s clear Square put a lot of thought into it.
They chose to remove the subpar from War of the Lions like Zombie Albus, provoking the ire of gamers everywhere asking for All The Content. Very respectable.
The game looks really good compared to say Tactics Ogre Reborn (ugly) or Triangle Strategy (even uglier) I’m impressed by whoever got the idea of the background grain, since it looks nothing like a CRT or anything else I’ve seen before. The look is close to a scan or a screenshot in a videogame magazine. Look at the blue background there.

This is the first time the game’s been translated to French, and it’s a direct translation from the straight to the point original Japanese rather than the more flowery English translation, so it’s a pretty huge deal.

Also I apologize for bringing QoL in this but you can now cancel movement. In FFT. Wow.

Anyway I’m in early Chapter 2. Chapter 1 is very powerful and resonates a lot with our current history. What a game.
Chapter 1 is also when the gameplay’s best. I think you could just play FFT Chapter 1 and be done

Like most people, I had never recruited any monsters outside of the chocobos, so I’m going with Ramza + 4 monsters this time, with Ramza not doing any offensive action (so he’s running around throwing potions)
Bad news, it turns out the chocobos were the best by far all along. I’ve spent like 5 in game years running back and forth to get advanced evolutions and all these monsters blow.
Ā« Bulls look good Ā» mid damage, low accuracy, 3 mov, not that tanky
Ā« Trees look cool Ā» 3 movement, low speed, no vertical tolerance on any of their moves, worse than basic goblins
Ā« I could use 4 undead monsters so they could revive forever Ā» No they’re so slow and do low damage they’d all die again and again and Ramza would get stormed

Right now I’m using one red chocobo, one black chocobo, one bull and one vampire panther (40% chance to either stop or petrify >>> any non-chocobo monster) the choco meteors are carrying me

If you have Ramza ride a chocobo can he still act separate from it?

biggest chapter 2 pro tip is that wizards are brokenly fast compared to other mages and the first level elemental summons are as powerful as fire or ice 3 over a much larger area, if you take all the magic boosting gear off Ovelia while she’s in your party and put it on a wizard who only casts Shiva that will be 60% of your offense for basically all of chapter 2 and 3 (until you can make barehanded ninjas which are the physical equivalent of summon wizards)

MP will initially be at a premium so they’ll only get like 2 casts a battle at first but that’s all you need

I don’t think you can remove gear from guests in the remaster

honestly reasonable, the only really appropriate times to do it in the original were immediately before (Gafgarion) and after (Ovelia) that one Chapter 2 Zirekile Falls battle

I played a little bit of Psychonauts 2 and the charm couldn’t carry me through what felt like pretty dull gameplay. I think its whole schtick was way more novel back when the original game came out and honestly these days I’d rather just watch a funny cartoon and chill out.

You can still remove gear in the FFT remaster, else Delita’s outfit would get outclassed through Chapter 1 (or worse, broken) You can’t change guest classes anymore however. So you can strip Gaff right before the falls, but you can’t also turn him into a priest with no spells on top of it

Skyla’s battle was somehow weirdly technical and therefore fun. Also somehow N’s Zoroark is now the highest level pokemon in my team. I taught him Sunny Day so he is a team player with my Arcanine now. And Sigurd knows Light Screen. So I can do very dumb things like Sigurd (light screen) → Bo (static → paralysis) →Zoroark (Sunny day) →Arcanine (Flame wheel →fire fang xN). I mean ideally arcanine will learn Flamethrower soon but whatever.

Tried writing a letter. Any guesses what it’s supposed to be about?

Edit: 10/7 evening. Got some sort of special item from a ghost in a haunted house. I feel bad for the trainers who are stuck in random rooms that can only be escaped when a random person finds a house in the middle of nowhere and walks several times through every accessible room.

Edit: 10/8 early morning. Caught both legendary deer things, only had to waste about 20 ultra balls and 10 great balls and all my timer balls and a luxury ball. I named the first one Hermes T. because Trismegistus wouldn’t fit, and the second one St. Francis. I bought a bunch of stat boosters at the store and am going to do that before fighting Drayden, but that really did basically entirely wipe me out so I have to be better about using the amulet coin from now until the elite four. Team Plasma barely show up in this game. Honestly it’s funny how much this game feels like everyone in the entire pokemon universe having an off year at once. It’s a very unstructured and low stakes experience and to be honest I’m enjoying it more for some reason for it’s lesser coherence.

Editagain: 7 badges at 17h43m. Drayden was my favorite gym leader so far, at least in terms of battle. The electric type was my favorite vibes wise. Looked up what other legendaries I might want to catch before this is over. It’s really just the third fighting deer, Reshiram, and Kyurem, of which I should save the master ball for Kyurem, which means I will have to buy about 50 ultra balls before the end of the game. That is very annoying but should be doable. I should look up where to sell the Big Nugget.

Nah, it’s a cool option but not very efficient. It’d be cool if there were more than 5 character slots per battle max

that joke K makes in MIB ā€œI guess I’ll have to buy the White Album againā€ - might apply well to FFT also

playing the raidou remaster as someone who never really looked into the devil summoner games too much. i have played a few newer games this year looking for something that would click with me and while the battles in raidou feel a little loose at this point i am having a very good time hanging out with demons and talking to demons. i fused a demon and one of the demons that went into the fusion left me a letter that was written in blood and the game did not elaborate. im having a good time

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 is kind of a relic, it’s physics physics is really old and yet still feels pretty good. You can kind of feel tires hook up in the turns. The early races are pretty rough as the cops can easily chase and ram your roadster, and it becomes pretty frustrating. It’s not difficult to hit an errant fence or railing and then send the car in a spin. I can’t use the chase camera on a lot of old racing games because it makes correcting the car’s movements to be really difficult - you don’t get enough visual feedback on lateral movements - so I’m in first person view most of the time. The tracks all have spectacular shortcuts - things like driving through jungle paths. I forgot that at later cop-threat levels they bring in a helicopter to drop bombs on the track, that’s pretty fun.

I take back what I said about this being inefficient, I only managed to finish the first Lionel Castle battle by having a black chocobo fly over to Ramza’s side so he could then ride it and fly over to the other side, leaving Gaffgarion completely stumped

that one you can generally just outdamage him by giving Ramza auto potion (which he’ll learn for free by then if you have a chemist in your party throughout most of act 1 and 2 and don’t waste his passive JP allocation on picking up chemist abilities other than that) and selling all your regular potions beforehand so he only uses hi potions when damaged.

by the next Ramza solo fight you probably need ninja instead so you can do double damage and end it more quickly if you don’t want to resort to more boring tactics (though there are plenty of those)
