Games You Played Today: 13 Going On 30

Co-signed so hard. I tried it out last year or the year before when it was on a deep sale. I gave it a very fair shake and spent a few hours on it hoping it would grab me or I’d find something to love about it beyond the character designs but alas it was not to be.

Just a really unsatisfying, grind-y experience with this basic NPC factions/allegiance system that I could tell was going to take way too long to start paying off. I think I could have overlooked a lot if the main character just felt better to control.

Beat Shiren of Serpentcoil Isle this evening. First time I’ve beaten a Shiren.

  • Peach bunned and confused Jakaku’s minions
  • Put Jakaku in empathetic status
    • Traded blows, getting an extra hit on Jakaku with every hit i received
  • Used one revival grass
  • Bested Jakaku with only 10 of my HP left

I know there’s way more game after the main dungeon, but I’m feeling pretty good about this.

I said fuck it and started playing Resident Evil: Revelations on 3DS when I already beat it on PC. The controls are mapped perfectly but due to 3DS limitations still awful, but that somehow adds to the charm. Also I noticed a hopeful plot detail at the start of the game that would have been missed by anyone on a first play through, so now I’m wondering if there will be more things like that. It’s a technically competent and narratively average Resident Evil game but mostly it just makes me wish RE2 remake or even RE5 or 6 were on here, though the latter two would be unplayable on these controls so from that standpoint only 2 or 3 would be reasonable (almost certainly not 4, despite that being the least difficult port they could have done both from a system architecture standpoint and a past experience with ports standpoint). I know AI is fucking awful but if it ever gets good enough you can just tell it “hey, port this game to the NN3DS!” I have like 20 games in mind already.

lots of ppl will say “this game was my childhood” and it doesnt mean much but this game was my childhood and it means a lot. always happy to see cosmo. the end of the shareware episode scared me as a youngster.

Yeah I love suction cup E.T. and his Bubble Bobble esque world of stars and food too.

been having a ton of fun with evil egg. there’s a free demo rn which i guess is just a beta for the game bc that’s apparently listed as free, too.

the rare arcade game that actually feels as brutal and hopeless as robotron 2048. it expands on robotron in some pretty nice ways, too. a slippery dash that nicely balances risk & reward. three different subweapons that have limited ammo you can use sort of like get out of jail free cards. and then there’s a bunch of esoteric doodads to collect that give you weird little bonuses.

all the little items on the highscore table remind me of tower of druaga. really impressive package. a ton of attention to detail both in terms of visuals and design. i’m still having to learn new enemies in level 25+ there are sooo many!

I pirated hotel barcelona because I have negative hopes that those two morons will make a good game together and it’s a piece of shit unity game so it was running at like 3000 fps on my computer with horrible input lag like notorious 2008 russian gpu melter planet alcatraz. what the fuck lol… the two of the most washed guys in gaming out here getting guys who dont know how to avoid basic problems with unity to make a game for them apparently

I’m a Suda mark and even I can’t bring myself to touch Hotel Barcelona. Swery feels cursed as far as auteur game dudes’ track records go.

I’m under the impression that Suda told SWERY “Here’s a neat idea” then let him jump on the sword.

its genuinely such an embarrassing mistake this far along into the world of pc gaming to make i sincerely doubt i will ever actually go through with playing it lol

Played it for like half an hour and it’s mindboggling that they’d release a low-budget Hades ripoff exactly one day after Hades 2 comes out. I don’t even think Suda has anything to do with it beyond contributing some initial ideas, he politely distances himself from the game on Twitter and calls it a White Owl thing you can play while waiting for Romeo is a Dead Man, but it’s funny that Swery is trying to do a cheap Suda cover act anyway, here’s our heroine’s SECRET KILLER PERSONALITY called DR. CARNIVAL who’s the BIGGEST PSYCHO EVER.

The script is extremely Swery, it’s almost endearing how he always seems to depict the West based on some half understood conversations about drugs, sexuality, cinema and so on in America. The poorly animated intro has a character go on a rant about how we live in the age of diversity and hitchhiker is a bigoted word (?), then he snorts cocaine off a girl’s breasts but it’s not even a line or anything, she sprinkles it over her cleavage like it was a pinch of salt. Another character in the hotel mentions bondage services like it was supposed to be shocking. It would be endearing if he ever went full Panty and Stocking with this stuff, as it is it reads like an open minded conservative blushing at and struggling to comprehend the idea of anything outside of his wheelhouse.

The best part of the game is easily Hiroaki Hashimoto’s art, wish the 3D models captured even a bit of its charm. I’m kinda interested in some of the more offbeat ideas it has but between the horrible Unity performance, painful roguelite progression and the general low rent feeling, life might be too short. Saw some reviews claiming the best way to beat bosses is to repeat runs exactly the same way until the boss room is full of your ghosts from the previous runs, sounds like the game doubles down on the way the genre likes to waste your time.

When I read the steam page for it that was like wow your ghosts stick around and can hurt stuff so if you die a lot the game gets EASIER! this is exactly what i pictured happening. why even bother making it a roguelike then? I’m aware that it’s so they don’t actually have to bother balancing the game

Enjoying CloverPit a lot. It does the Balatro thing, except you’re trapped in sorta PSOne prison cell with a slot machine having to pay off ever-increasing amounts of debt, and your only hope of putting the odds in your favor are collecting weird charms that will influence the reels.

After meeting two deadlines the game introduces the chance to pull a 666 reel, which instantly bankrupts you. There are charms that can mitigate this, and even make it work in your favor, but late game plays are about trying not to get too greedy and go for too many pulls lest you bankrupt yourself.

I dunno, it’s pretty cool. The telephone sound between deadlines makes me jump every time, it’s so goddamn loud.

Also you can instantly earn two charms by pissing and shitting in the toilet , which is nice.

My pet theory is the fallout from D4 between swery, access games and microsoft turned him into the videogame joker and while he tried to repair his heart by being a buddhist monk for a lil while it just wasn’t enough to hold back the evil that now inhabits his soul. At least that’s the only way I’ve been able to justify his output since forming white owls…

I sometimes get served really confusing ads for his vr gambling game as if the universe is reminding me that, yes, swery still walks the demon’s path:

Played through BlueSuburbia (well what parts of it are finished) and was a bit impressed by it. Very much an arty walking sim type experience, and the subject matter about trauma and survivor’s guilt can definitely be harsh (and a bit repetitive) but there are some real nice touches I can’t recall seeing quite before. From a purely structural standpoint I’ve played my share of Bitsy games before, but using them to create tiny abstract 2d versions of the larger 3d polygonal space you are currently inhabiting that you dip into for awhile and sort of play off of each other is pretty creative.

I’ve decided that as a responsible Tyrande (role) player I can’t in good conscience play another QM of her on HOTS before winning a bot match with every single other character. Like yeah you gotta get in the mind of your teammates, the enemy, the devs, the original Warcraft campaign writers, stay updated with the sc2 coop meta, and also keep appraised of interested sc2 fan made campaigns.

Thats Tyrande.

I have been jokingly referring to Hotel Barcelona as Contractual Obligations: The Video Game. Suda made it pretty clear in an interview that his relationship to SWERY is calling him once a year and asking if the game is done yet while Grasshopper works on actual projects. A collaboration that only began due to the buzz surrounding the first Deadly Premonition, that very clearly became a bad idea in practice, and is now cynically marketing itself off the name of a guy who wants nothing to do with it. And only marketing itself off of him because he’s the guy in the duo that didn’t torpedo his goodwill with a string of bad games, transmisogynistic Twitter meltdowns, and knowingly and proudly going out for beers with guys accused of attempted rape. What I’m trying to say here is that SWERY is a hateful evil bastard of hell attempting to buy an extra fifteen minutes of fame while the rest of us with taste continue our frothing demand for Romeo Is A Dead Man.
