Modern Mortal Kombat is gross in my opinion. The more realistic it looks the less fun it is.

Phil was absolutely right about the Japanese game industry which was at that point entering the fifth year of a free fall that they’re only pulling out of since two years ago, to say nothing of a context where the western indie game scene had bloomed and Japan wasn’t experiencing anything like that renaissance – so much talent, locked in mobile free to play or behind limited print discs? It boggled the mind. It was not a controversial opinion among developers or even Japanese developers, and as Fez is bursting with love for the Japanese platformers he grew up on it doesn’t read as a more broad attack.
Also Renaud made Fez and he’s a more stable dude, he’s cool
who in Japan even creates new IPs though? i’d still say it’s in rather dreadful state, all things considered.
the one time i hung out with Phil, it was when we did an installation of a super-early/alpha build of Super Hypercube (i had to cobble together some 3D glasses using my weak soldering skills).
at the time, he was a chill enough dude, though he clearly had some things he was dealing with. basically, i blame social media and constant attention for a lot of his behavior, like so many of us.
Super Hypercube made a good gallery game. Chill but shy is the impression I have, but I can’t tell how much is language barrier.
You know what, I hate Halo and its descendants something about them feels off. Very willing to admit that the problem is me and not the games. I also missed the Gears of War boat entirely and don’t really feel bad about it though perhaps I would enjoy them.
I’m similar. I love Devil May Cry (especially 3) but I don’t like Bayonetta. Vanquish is better but still not that great.
I don’t think I have ever actually played Doom other than on a friend’s 32X which did not impress me as a kid and I always assumed it was only good at a very high level, like, super fast software rendering and fanmade WADs
so while I am not anti Doom per se I basically have no hardened Doom opinions and never felt compelled to seek them out
the new one is good though
as for Platinum I generally agree, I think OG Bayonetta was really impressive animation and playability-wise (it’s like Soul Calibur vs. Tekken a decade prior) and the storytelling came together to a surprising and endearing extent but with all of its design compromises (those bossfights!) it’s not really better-better than DMC3, and the only other Platinum games I’d write home about are Vanquish and Nier Automata, which both also have some obvious weaknesses
everything that was ultimately kind of meh about Viewtiful Joe has basically been carried forward for 15 years
this is somewhat a roguelike thread but index is far too sapped to go rant once more
about how the well has always been poisoned in terms of wasting randomized learning premises for maximalist bellicose mystique as reverse-comfort comfort food, she does this every time and like what is the point nobody actually absorbs anything of her pretty prattle
(aside from fulfilling the thread context by complaining about how Nethack was liked by sb and the medium-corruption lineage from there to tome to dwarves to issac to rainrisk to gungeon)
anyway, front-loaded complexity has always been inessential. play any of shiren and necrodancer and 20XX and monolith and slay the spire and brogue and downwell
…oh, I guess I could say that as a level designer I’ve never really liked sandbox explorers / builders (mc, terraria, starbound). if I wanted to build things I could make something far more deliberate + purposeful + distinct + lasting than transient unwieldy sand-castles; building towers instead of personalizing apartments, especially when I could personalize through reflective prose anyway. most of those also-sort-of-comfort-food rather struggle with regular combat having much point anyway, too.
Oh, Hotline Miami. It’s an incredible game but also…bad…
What distinguishes Hotline Miami from other acceptable indulgent violence fests as being bad, the player pointed guilt edge?
Is this thread tulpa-bait
Roguelikes and especially roguelites rank very low in my heirarchy
Monster hunter bores me the way MMOs bore me, so frictionless
I honestly despise all but like 3 zelda games
Blizzard has never made a good game
My favorite games are all bad
Oh and for something more recent, Minit is a chore
The Witness is a freemium smartphone puzzle game dressed up like its something more than that
who doesn’t though
Zelda next to Pokemon is among top results for “unabashed gushing from nostalgia fueled fandom” in any form or style of entry
I also provide top results in any form or style of entry
I’ll second pokemon as a totally forgettable game series. The appeal is limited to cute designs but all the games are so agonizingly slow and uninteresting
Also this game. Pretty sure its the beard
Oh this one will be a hot take that earns me so many burns
Bangai O is absolutely not worth my time
Could never be arsed to care about this game either!
Elderscrolls. At least morrowind and onward. I hear every tell these amazing player driven stories but when ever I sit down with them I just wonder how anyone lives with this. Moving feels horrible. Swinging a sword feels horrible. Jumping is a joke. I don’t care how rich the writing is. I can’t stand to press any buttons in this game. Miss me with this stuff.
