Based on the videos of Midtown Madness 2 I’ve been watching recently (It’s San Francisco) the player is expected to memorize the city map. For a long while the trend in game design was to make the largest maps possible, and a player getting lost was a desirable outcome because it was novel. In addition it looks like the checkpoints don’t need to be done sequentially, so in the video they’re done out of sequence because it’s faster.
I used to play midtown madness all the time when I was a kid. I could even still recognize some of the roads in that video. Lainer’s right, players just learned the 3d space like it was a real place because it was novel to have a place so big in a video game
Up way past my bedtime making some recent and probably locally shared anxieties much worse by watching a playthrough of Hudson Soft’s Fire Rescue for the MSX, a game in which a firefighter does their best to prioritise the safety of (and I’ve just learned that this is the preferred term) a mischief of mice across multiple stories of a burning building while little interstitial screens show the sole surviving human inhabitant screaming for help from the roof…
I kept holding out hope that once you make it to the top there’d be some sort of ending cutscene of this person finally getting rescued as well, but NOPE! You just move onto the next burning building full of mice!!
Currently price comparing “escape ropes” online that could be permanently tied to the leg of our bed and tossed out the window at a moments notice in the event of the downstairs kebab shop spontaneously combusting
Edit: gotta see to getting our roof properly repaired at some point too…
FF12 fans vindicated
I think they had it all wrong, they should have brought back Alone in the Dark as a skateboarding game
This rocks.
Also saying “horror Tony Hawk” caused two games with the premise to enter Beta.
Someone got a partially translated Seaman-themed windows assistant/Clippy-like working on windows 11

the bourgeois paranoia section of this video is a beautiful example of the magic of the classical lets play format

These don’t embed but I had fun skimming them (~~someone may have finally become a Saturn owner because they only just now found out there are these Saroo cart things that can straight dump the BIOS, no desoldering / EPROM programmer required = oo and I just really want Hyper Golf okay); I found them through some article by @exodus because he was the main Saturn nut I could think of:
– https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHapk8eQbz4 (“Sega Saturn Best Games Lv.3”)
– https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qtp527sMFTM (“Sega Saturn hell Games”)
both by yawa aka やわらか宇宙研究所 aka Soft Space Laboratory.
Someone on a Titanium Court review mentioned that they watch the annual Candy Crush tournament finals. I quickly found a video and flipped it on.
I can’t believe this. Instead of showing the matches or commentating, they just play reality TV music over a rapid montage of cuts, about half of which are studio audience shots. I’m linking straight to the final match and it’s still just this.
I’m only exposing you to it at all because the set and costume design is honestly kinda fly all things considered.
all the women are in outfits that look like something dawn wiener would be forced to wear for a nice dinner
