I played this this past summer - game is awesome. if you have a chance to go to Fun World in New Hampshire, I recommend the stop
must have been cool to play the theme-park-sized version in Japan which supported 28 players

Guy playing the Final Fantasy Tactics remaster with only the protagonist, locked to the (weak) archer class. I tried 5 archers myself before, it was very challenging and I gave up at the final boss. 4 archers only would be unthinkable. This guy only has 1
He spent the last 100 hours in the deep dungeon, restarting the same battle over and over until he finds a rare 1/2000 encounter against 4 enemies including one geomancer with Tremor and one Mediator with Enlighten.
The plan is for the geomancer to cast Tremor on Ramza and friendly fire hit the mediator with it so it triggers a rare % confusion status on the mediator who would then hopefully cast Enlighten on Ramza, permanently bringing his faith stat down so he can survive more easily against the final bosses.
He needs to find that encounter about 6 or 7 times to get faith lowered to the lowest possible value

incredibly candid postmortem of how Crime Boss Rockay City was made.
damn, this would be a pretty cool open world
It is strange how the vast majority of open world games involve driving a car, and yet even the ones that are racing games don’t just put a race track in the middle of the game world.
It’s much better than AVGN the movie.
iirc, wasn’t the … Crew(?), that ‘open world driving across America’ game, having Laguna Seca as a location you can drive into and turn laps there?
Aside from that, technically one of the PS2 GTAs had motocross racetrack(s?) you could drive on, and GTA VC had a destruction derby-esque dome, though iirc you had to activate a race to get inside the building.
is burnout paradise relevant to this discourse?
The GTA race racks were all dropped in empty space on the edges of maps. Burnout Paradise is just a city and mountains. There’s some courses on the maps in later open world EA racers, but they still aren’t what the rest of the world is built around.
The original release of Mafia had a race track right on the edge of the city, which was linked to a notoriously difficult mission where you raced 1930s sports cars that handled like shit
I think the remake also has this area and mission but it made the driving much more forgiving
the cars in mafia 1 were designed to be driven with a steering wheel like a racing game which is why everyone has trouble driving them. it was originally exclusively a driving game which you can still see in there with some of the mission design like the opening cab stuff, the race, all the times you gotta drive out to the countryside, etc.
they also handle like cars from the 1930s, ie like shit
the original mafia had a surprisingly realistic driving model for the time
it’s certainly the best part of mafia for sure, the combat is…not good…and the translation has always felt bad to me. Illusion loved making games where like one specific aspect was surprisingly realistic, like vietcong’s jungle levels
how about SSX 3 being several tracks continuously joined by open free ride/resort sections?
this channel is incredible
Do you mean you can play a free ride mode in which successive tracks run on into each other? I’ve never played SSX 3 personally.
